Ducks, L.A. Kings, could be in mood to deal at trade deadline
Here’s a closer look at the Kings and Ducks going into the deadline:
Kings: Additional scoring to aid their 28th-ranked offense, which averages 2.32 goals per game.
Ducks: A big center or a veteran defenseman to make them even more difficult to play against.
Kings: Ryan Kesler of the struggling Vancouver Canucks would fit nicely because he’s the kind of big, scrappy player Kings coach Darryl Sutter loves on his teams. If they add somebody, it must be strictly as a rental because the Kings have salary-cap concerns that make it difficult (impossible?) to add a player with a multi-season contract beyond this year. Best bet is Buffalo’s Thomas Vanek, who is likely to sign a free-agent deal with the Minnesota Wild when he becomes a free agent in the summer. Matt Moulson, a former Kings forward now with the New York Islanders, is another option.
Ducks: Tyler Myers, the Sabres’ 6-foot-8 defenseman, could be an option, according to reports. Defenseman Andrew MacDonald of the Islanders is another possibility for the Ducks, who have plenty of depth in goal in their system to swing a deal. Or two. If they look to bolster their size and depth at center they could take a run at David Legwand of the Nashville Predators, a pending unrestricted free agent who has been with the franchise since it began in 1998-99. From the out of left field choices, how about winger Jaromir Jagr, who is playing well with the going-nowhere New Jersey Devils?
Kings: Kesler, Moulson, Vanek, Calgary’s Michael Cammalleri and Edmonton’s Sam Gagner.
Ducks: Myers and Buffalo teammate Christian Ehrhoff, MacDonald and Ottawa’s Chris Phillips.
