Dudley to follow Bergevin?

New Habs GM Marc Bergevin, not surprisingly, wants to bring his old Blackhawks colleague Rick Dudley with him to Montreal and is in discussions with the Toronto Maple Leafs to do just that.

Dudley is director of player personnel for the Leafs. Montreal wants to make him its new assistant GM. Toronto GM Brian Burke is talking to Bergevin about how to proceed.

“Working through it,” Burke told ESPN.com via email Sunday.

According to my TSN colleague Darren Dreger, who first reported the story Sunday morning, Dudley has an out clause in his deal but his transfer to Montreal is complicated by the fact both the Canadiens and Leafs have high picks in the June draft and Dudley has done the prep work on it for Toronto.

No doubt the Leafs would prefer to have Dudley wait until after the draft to join Montreal.

This smells on so many levels. The one that gets me the most, forgetting the Leaf slant,  is that Dudley should've been the main guy targeted as GM over Bergevin. I just don't get why Dudley would want this gig.

because this is a promotion for dudley and in toronto he wouldn't have moved up in the organization ,he was behind nonis and loiselle there, here in montreal he'll be assistant g.m. ,also he wouldn't have got the g.m. job because he didn't speak french. but he's taking the job in montreal because he's good friends with bergevin as well

Dudley has laid the foundation for 2 cup winning teams in Tampa and Chicago he also did a pretty good job at lining Winnipeg up with some talent, I do however think that in all fairness to both organizations that Dudley should finish the work he started in Toronto before moving on to Montreal.

Well that's kinda my point…he's more qualified than Bergevin….but he doesn't speak french. With the Leafs…if Burke goes down…so does Nonis, Loiselle and the rest of the milion dollar minions, (and Dudley would have a real shot at gm). With the habs….asst gm is the most he could be. So again I'd ask him over a beer….Rick….why?

I'm not a conspiracy theory guy but Dave King was once the assistant coach in Montreal under Alain Vigneault – could Dudley be the real GM and Bergevin be the face of the franchise?

Thats pretty much what I was thinking.
