Eagle to Edmonton?

The Toronto Star Reported today that the Edmonton Oilers may be interested in Belfour.

Heres the article:

Don’t be surprised if the Edmonton Oilers take a serious run at Maple Leafs goalie Ed Belfour before next Thursday’s trade deadline.

With his team’s playoff fortunes sinking fast, largely because of sub-par goaltending, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe is under considerable pressure to get a proven NHL stopper and there is speculation that he has Belfour, not the much-speculated Curtis Joseph, in his sights.

It makes for an intriguing situation, one that could come to fruition despite the fact that Belfour has a no-trade clause in his contract. Belfour holds the power to veto any trade, but it’s believed that he would approve any deal if the team acquiring him agreed to pick up his $4.5 million (all figures U.S.) option for next season.

Under the terms of his contract with the Leafs, the team has the option for next season, but must pay Belfour $1.5 million if it declines to exercise it. That buyout amount would count against next year’s salary cap.

Going into last night’s game against the San Jose Sharks, the Oilers were 18th in the league in goals against and don’t have a single goalie with a save percentage of .900. The Leafs are 23rd in goals-against and Belfour’s save percentage going into last night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres was a career-worst .891. But he still has won 21 games this year behind the Leafs defence corps and there is a sentiment among NHL observers that Belfour could thrive in a more positive situation.

I just want Belfour die in Toronto, that would be a stupid move from the Oilers

  2. skidragoon says:

I heard oiler fans are going to ***** this thread up now and if belfour does arrive there they will call him a king just like they will do if cujo arrives there… hypocritcal bas-rds

  3. Marky2Fresh says:

I would take Belfour over Curtis, the reason…Eddie has won a cup before.

  4. JannettyTheRocker says:

I don’t know about this rumor. Sounds like another Leaf’s fan blowing smoke out their ass with this one. Why would the Oiler’s be interested in Belfour??? I guess he would be good for the playoff stretch. But, I really don’t know if I want him here in Edmonton. I mean, after all, he is a tainted Leaf’s product, that can’t be good. But then again, a trip to a real NHL city like Edmonton may just be what the doctor ordered for the Eagle………..But I’ll believe it when I see it.

    GO OILERS GO!!!!

  5. Marky2Fresh says:

lol real NHL city…at least our team has been around for more than 50 years.

Also if Eddie plays for the Oil the way he did for the Leafs last year, you’ll be the first willing to drop down and give him a hummer…regardless of him being “tainted”

  6. mikster says:

Eddie the Pigeon has been pretty dreadful to watch this season.

I don’t think the Oilers should take him. Too risky. He’d come in for very cheap because of his no trade clause, his age, and his contract. That’s the only reason why i could see Lowe gamble on this one.

  7. JannettyTheRocker says:

It’s pretty pathetic that such a “historic” franchise’s only claim to fame is that they are over 50 years old. Atleast the Habs can talk about all those Stanley Cups they won over the years. The Leafs, sure they won some cups, but only because the NHL had 6 teams at the time………

The Oilers, been around since 1979, won 5 Stanley Cups in six finals appearances. And had it not been for the total unbalanced financial situation that held them back, they would have likely won a lot more cups.

If Eddie Belfour does come to Edmonton, I totally admit that I would support him, as I do the rest of the blue and copper. I just hope he can shake his Maple Leaf’s experiences. It’s pretty hard to go from a loser franchise to a winner. I hope the Eagle can handle it.

  8. TheWho says:

And Leaf fans dont do that? haha

  9. Tweek says:

Mik, you come down on him too hard.

Has he been bad? Yes he has but thats more in part to the leafs crappy defense. He has let in more soft goals then usual but I think he could help the Oil a lot. Whether the leafs actually trade him or not is a another story.

  10. LeafyMcLeaf says:

    This move makes sense.

They need an experienced goalie, he will cost them next to nothing, and the buyout clause that counts against the next years cap… the Oilers will not be an at the cap team any ways, they don’t need the space, especially considering the cap is raising to about $46 000 000.

And we could take on some of the Oilers dead weight… Mike Peca? Maybe… I’d prefer Jason Smith, but they won’t trade their captain.

A similar rumor is out of LA, but we’d have to take on JRs salary.. I don’t think so…

  11. taylor44 says:

maaaaaybe possibly. but not for a whole heck of alot, unless toronto gives them back something to equal out the 1.5 million dollar buy out for next season.

  12. patdud says:

    Belfour is too old

they would be much better off with cujo

the eagle just aint what he used to be

  13. oilers4thecup says:

belfour can’t play at the level he used to this would be a stupid trade by the oilers they should get a younger goalie with some # 1 experince the only other thing that would make sence would be to get cujo because his afordable and you don’t have to give up very much

  14. DeathCab says:

This wouldn’t make a ton of sense for the oliers, although the eagle would make an ok rental.

From a leaf fans perspective: Do it! As long as Eddie is in Toronto, the young guys in net will never be able to develop beyond a decent backup (at least in Toronto).

  15. sakic91 says:

ahahh i think they are both pasted there time.

they both so some of there old greatness from the past and reason cujo never one a team cuz the players up front couldnt do it

  16. oiler1fan says:

Belfour is the worst goalie we could get. First, he has been playing like Theodore, and we would have to pay him 4.5 million next year. Although he would be an upgrade over what we have, it wouldn’t be much. Second, there’s something called a salary cap. Although the salary cap is projected $46 million, the Oilers have a budget of about 38 million. Last, oiler fans (like me) hate Eddie because of all the years he stoned us in the playoffs. One of my early hockey memories is screaming at the top of my lungs booing him. As you guessed… i don’t want belfour here.

  17. Nemix says:

Gosh knows i loved the eagle when he was soaring high in the early ninties with the hawks under keenan, less when in dallas but lets be honest. He has cost this team critical games by stupid decisions to hack and slash that result in penalties or drunk wanderings passing the puck to the opposite team. That has nothing to do with TO. defense when he personally giftwraps a puck to a forward streaking in off the boards. That could cost edmonton big this stage of the game. Its not the age (lets be honest, goaltenders stay in one place and hasek is in his 40s), its his inabilities to co ordinate himself in his surroundings. Edmonton would be better to look elsewhere, even europe before bringing in belfour.

  18. goOilersgo0506 says:

The Oil don’t want to pick up the tab on his “Depends” bill. We don’t need him ! Shoot high, Go for Luongo!

  19. mtrakker85 says:

why on earth would a team that wants to make the playoffs take a goalie from a crappy team who is 10 years past his prime?

if the oilers are smart, they will pass on this and go for a real goalie like Biron or even Raycroft.

  20. the_bob says:

Holy crapt! I can’t understant what Kevin Lowe find of good in the 40 years old goalie of the Maple Leaf… He’s at the end of his carrer and he does nothing good this year… Add to that is exhuberant salary and it make it a guy to retire. Anyway, Cujo is the guy that Edmonton need!

With Cujo, Edmonton will be the Calgary Flames of 2004 like it was say on this site. But this year, the Oilers will beat the Flames in the Western Conference Final!

Oilers fan for the life (except if Belfour comes to Edmonton!)

  21. Bergeron47 says:

hahah why would ANYONE want Belfour.

  22. TMK88 says:

People really underestimate Eddie Belfour. His numbers aren’t good, and he’s been a bit inconsistant — but look at the team he’s got in front of him. It’s, by far, the worst Canadian team in the league.

Eddie doesn’t have a single good defensive pairing in front of him (Mccabe is good at putting pucks in the net, not keeping them out. Kaberle is a second-pairing guy on a team that doesn’t suck).

I wouldn’t mind Eddie Belfour, he’s got the experiance and talent level to upgrade Edmonton’s current situation.

That being said, I’d much prefer Curtis Joseph.

  23. hammer4488 says:

first of all if you make fun of Eddie at least make it understandable, not jibberish. Secondly i agree with TMK at the bottom of the post. Who does he have infront of him? Berg, Khavanov, Klee? come on now. These guys are bush league. You could dress 4 pylons in leafs jerseys and they could do just as good and may be even better. You could even go further and put a “shooter tutor” in the pipes and the leafs defence would still find a way to screw up and lose. Dont blame Eddie. Sure he isnt playing the best. But the defence have more to do with it then anything else. Long live the Leafs

  24. peataters says:

no because leafs are a JOKE!

  25. ahuja21 says:

Ok no offence but Edmonton that would be a waste of money..oilers already have a great goalie…why would they want eddy? ed might have a heart attack on the ice…..
