Fernandez out of Minnesota

Rumors out of Minnesota indicate that the Minnesota Wild may be looking to deal their number one goalie Manny Fernandez.According to the Star tribune http://www.startribune.com/wild/story/1221736.html the Minnesota Wild are looking to lock up Niklas Backstrom to a long term contract that would place him in the starting role.

What do you think Fernandez could fetch in a trade? With the draft right around the corner do you think that it will be a package of picks?

Fernandez has a weird value….some of his stats have to be alloted to the fact that the Wild play a ridiculously defensive style, even Raycroft could gather could stats playing for them.

but he is a good goalie….perhaps (if I may use leaf players) a Stajan and a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Fernandez and a 4th rounder.

At least that's my value on him…I'm not saying that trade would do it, nor do I want toronto to trade for him it was just an example of what I think his value is.

Perhap you think he's worth more?

That value sounds about correct. The best hockey he played was with Roli pushing him for time. He needs to be in that situation again. Toronto or LA come to mind.

    Fernandez's numbers:

    GP: 44, 22-16-1
GAA: 2.55 good for 15th in the league
SV %: .911 also 15th in the league

So some pretty solid numbers, nothing to go crazy about, and with a 4.5 million dollar contract I don't think teams will have to give up that much for him.

i think you may be over-valuing Stajan… then again, any1 who leaves the Leafs becomes a star… so you never know:P

  5. BruMagnus says:

If you had said two seasons ago that both Manny and Rolly would be gone in two years time, you'd have been called crazy.

  6. mojo19 says:

Oh yeah, one more interesting thing – Fernandez had a 7-1 record in shootouts and is arguably the league's best shootout goalie.

  7. JuicemaN says:

    Pretty much.

I do like Stajan….of course in a heterolsexual kind of way….I think he'll turn out to be another Peca like player, some seasons he may crack 60 points and some he may barely hit 40, but he'll end up a solid defensive forward….or at least that's how I see it, but I could be wrong.

  8. JuicemaN says:

It's true…which is why I keep asking why people think Backstrom will get 5 million…any GM that pays that for a 41 game history should be fired.

  9. cecilturtle says:

Fernandez has a high salary counting against the cap…  It might be hard to move him if Minnesota does not pick up some of his contract and cap space, or at least take a high salary player in return as part of the trade?  Hey, any one want to bet???  I will bet anyone that "UFA" Jed Ortmeyer is signed by the Wild this offseason and playes on a line centered by Dominek Moore next year…  Any takers???

The Wild shooters scored a lot of shoot out goals. But you're right he still had to stop the one's coming the other way, too.
Does a good shoot out record increase one's value? Kiprusoff was arguably the worst shoot out goalie but that doesn't seem to decrease his value.

  11. mojo19 says:

I don't think it changes the value that much, but its a 4 or 5 pts in the standings difference potentially if you have a good or bad goalie for shootouts. Those points are important.

  12. mojo19 says:

You can't trade for cap space. So it would have to be bringing salary back via trade.

    I heard $3 million
