Well I obviously posted this before the philadelphia game. The Pens really got their legs after the first period in that game and looked a lot how I kind of expected at the beginning of the year. They played very well against a pretty strong flyers team. I think Koltsov looks incredible right now, and I think a lot of the rest of the team played much better as well. Morozov didn't look so lost, the team continued to play much more physical, and the D broke out a lot more efficiently. Caron was shaky at first, but then played solidly and made a couple of key saves in the third.

One thing that really worries me are all of the defensive zone turnovers by the young fowards, especially Murley and Malone. This is to be expected I suppose with the team as young as it is this year, but at the NHL level you simply cannot just aimlessly through the pick into the middle of the ice from your own zone side boards a la Malone late in the third. Nonetheless, a CRUCIAL tie for the morale of the team, as I said in an earlier article I forsee lots of ties this year, due to the inability for that late push towards the end of the game.

as much as i would love for the pens to have a decent year, just with their roster alone there are severe doubts, noticed by almost everyone

it has come to the point where if lemieux moves to another team the franchise will go down the drain. pens fans must pack the stadium regardless if that guy plays or not.

what they do need is some solid d man, work their way as a team with a small salary playing the trap like the wild. get rid of injury prone straka for some solid defensive players.

the pens cannot put an offensive scoring threat on the ice with their resource constraints. as players develop into scorers their salaries just sky-rocket, while defensive specialists remain affordable

It would be better this way:

Lemiuex realizes he's in a rut and something needs to be done. Tallas is called back down to the AHL to help thier playoff run. Ironically, Frank Piterangelo was never officially released from his contract, and so the 45 year-old former back-up becomes the Pens only hope. Following this up, Lemuiex persuades Kevin Stevens, John Cullen, Ulf Samuleson and Zarley Zalapski to come out of retirement. They then persuade Mike Gartner, Glenn Anderson, Dale Hunter, Paul Coffey and Rod Langway to return. Denis Potvin and Bryan Trottier join in the fun. Finally Wayne Gretzky joins them. And so the Pens become the greatest team ever to play the game and win the Stabey Cup in dramatic fashion over the Calgary Flames.

Then Mario wakes up next to Jagr and realizes its all been a wonderful dream.

1.) Lemieux trades himself to Colorado for Chris McAllister, D.J. Simth, and a dollar.

2.) He pitches a major bitch when he discovers he will be the 3rd line center.

3.) In retaliation, Colorado trades him to Washington to be reunited with Jaromir (wah!) Jagr. The Avs get Olaf Kolzig in return.

4.) The Avs win the Cup - Lemieux and Jagr end up on "Dr. Phil".

I want two things to happen:

1. Pittsburgh to charge head-first into the playoffs and upset Jersey or somebody

or

2. The whole thing to become a circus. Lemuiex trading himself, a new starting player every game. Fluery and Caron both suck o they have to call up Robbie Tallas and he kicks ass the rest of the season. But still the Pens finish 9-60-11-2

Fleury is definately a future star and he is one of the main cornerstones that the pens need to build up. The thing that worries me is that rookies tend to slow down in the mid season because they are not used to the long season in the NHL tus making them more vulnerable to fatigue. Especially goaltenders who have a way tougher job than most people think. Those of you who have played goalie before would know what I am talking about. I just hope he keeps up his solid performances and who knows, this team may not be too shaby this year after all.
