Flyers Acquire Zhitnik

According to philadelphiaflyers.com (team’s official website):

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired defenseman Alexei Zhitnik from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenseman Freddy Meyer and a conditional draft pick.

So much for the youth movement… I know the Flyers defense is abysmal, but Freddy wasn’t the biggest problem.  I don’t understand trading away a 25 year old defenseman who makes $525k for a 34 year old defenseman who makes $3.5 million and won’t make a material impact on the team.  Now they have $10.5 million a year tied up in 3 defenseman that wouldn’t make the top pairing on most teams.  Meyer had a great year last year and had a future as a solid 4-5 defenseman on this team.  To top it all off they sent a draft pick the other way.

Let’s hope something else is brewing…

Does anyone know how long Zhitnik is under contract for?  He is a solid player who will play well for the orange and black.

Flyers got ripped off, btw I think that this is his contract year.

Wow, my guess is the Isles were unhappy with Zhitnik and wanted to free up cap for a bigger move. This move does and doesn't sound like the Flyers, they like big and slow defensemen, Zhitnik is niether. But he is older and overpaid now, that's their style. Alex was Buffalo's best defenseman for years, but sucked as soon as he left the Sabres. He signed a 4 year deal with the Isles last year, so the Flyers are on the hook for 2 more years after this season. I'd have tried to dump Hatcher, where are the Flyers getting cap space from?

I hear they traded zhitnik to clear up space for brewer or leetch…

I think the Flyers are just acquiring assets for the trade deadline. If Zhitnik plays decent, then they can move him at the deadline for a good prospect or pick. Zhitnik will be a great deadline pickup for a playoff team that needs "D" help, like the Oilers (like Spacek last season) or Vancouver.

This trade may get the Flyers a good young player later down the line.

WTF are the Flyers thinking? Zhitnik's contract alone should've scared them away. A young, developing Dman with minimum contract for a guy who's small, gettin old, and is way overpaid at 3.5 mil for 3 years to go?

Plus they sent a pretty high draft pick to NYI to boot?

    Flyers got ROBBED

Zhitnik has 2 more years now with Phillt, becoming a UFA in 09/10.
Meyer has 1 more year after this one, becoming  a UFA in 08/09

(for more salaries and contract lengths see http://www3.telus.net/public/dreyes/nhl/)

Unless Zhitnik returns to his BUF form, this is a pointless trade for both teams not counting salaries. Both can be big hitters with hard shots and both play decent offensive and defensive hockey.

Sidney Crosby must be drooling at the thought of playing the Flyers again. After having a monster night for 6 points against the Flyers, the Pens played the Islanders and specifically Crosby embarrassed Zhitnik on the ice by overpowering, outskating, and outsmarting the defenseman.

Zhitnik ended up taking 3 penalties on the night, all of them on Crosby, and was a -3 for the game. More than that, it was almost sad how Crosby was dominating him on every shift they met. Crosby finished the night with a goal and 3 assists (all part of Malone’s hat-trick). He might be thinking of breaking the Penguins’ Lemieux one-game points record now.

I remembered there was rumors that the Bruins were going to trade Brad Stuart or Paul Mara for Zhitnik too. As much as I love Zhitnik, I would not give up Stuart or Mara for him. Especially Stuart, he's arguably our best d-man, he's definately been our best in the past few weeks.

I don't know too much about the guy Flyers traded but I never understood the point of traded somebody who's 25 for somebody who's 35. Zhitnik isn't going to play much longer and won't even put up good trade value. Flyers better be hoping to do something good with him.

Also, I still think Alexei Zhitnik is the coolest name to ever play the game! =D

Brewer aint going to the Islanders its reported from Dregger from TSNs Insider that the Blues are talking to the Oil and Canucks its believed the players in the possible deals would be.

    To Blues-Bergeron and  Mikhanov
    To Oil-Brewer

To Blues-Chouinard,Edler,and All-Star Fitzpatrick(just to even out the sallarys out)
    To Canucks-Brewer

Wouldnt be bad trades for all teams maybe Brewer would turn his game around with the Oil or Canucks.

The Flyers better plan on moving him again, and quickly.  The season for them is already over, so there is no point in trying to acquire a better defensive defenseman.  Meyer has played fairly well for the Flyers in the brief time he has been here.  This move was incredibly stupid.  Good work.

  11. Aetherial says:

Clearly the Flyers must have signed JFJ before this move and we just haven't heard about it yet.

I don't get it. I really don't. It is something that JFJ would do… meaning incredibly stupid.

The Flyers payroll just went up, for 2 years after this one, and they aren't much better.
