Flyers interested in Shanahan?
Despite a report in the Ottawa Sun that noted the Flyers as being a possible destination for free agent left wing Brendan Shanahan, Holmgren said he has no interest in signing the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer, who left the New Jersey Devils during training camp.Holmgren said he is hopeful center Blair Betts (shoulder) and defenseman Ryan Parent (groin) will be cleared to play Saturday when the Flyers return to action against the Carolina Hurricanes. He did not rule out acquiring a forward to improve the club’s offensive depth.
“Part of my job is always to try to improve the hockey team,” Holmgren said. “I like the team. I think we have to bear down on our chances and maybe dig a little deeper. Certainly nobody around here is accepting the fact lightly we are where we are right now. We need to get better if we want to win more hockey games.”
The Flyers are coming off back-to-back losses to the Sharks and Capitals and have lost five of their last seven after starting the season 3-0. Coach John Stevens had planned to give his players the day off on Wednesday but instead put them through a workout at the Skate Zone.
“These days off have to be earned and it is not OK in our business to play well and lose night after night,” Stevens said. “You need to find ways to do the extra things necessary to win hockey games, especially close games.
