Flyers pursuing Canucks center Ryan Kesler?

Two league sources told the Daily News that the Flyers have tabled a “substantial offer” to try and pry Kesler from the Canucks. They have also asked about acquiring Vancouver defenseman Alexander Edler, who is reportedly on the market, as part of a larger trade – though that combined price is steep.

At this point, a little more than 24 hours shy of Wednesday’s 3 o’clock finish line, any deal of this magnitude seems rather unlikely. There are numerous obstacles in the way.

Plus, the Flyers clearly are not the only player pursuing Kesler. Numerous teams, including Pittsburgh, Toronto, Chicago, Boston and even Columbus have inquired with Canucks general manager Mike Gillis about Kesler.

The Leafs defence needs a total overhaul. This is not a Stanley Cup caliber defence. Not even close. Unless of course you’re happy with stagnation and mediocrity.

Except for Morgan Rielly, I’d work to slowly rebuild that blueline. Gardiner would fetch the most value no doubt. If you can build a trade around him to get Kesler, that would be a steal.

Sounds like Kesler only wants to go to the USA, but who knows? He is a very good player, but showing signs of breaking down IMO. I wouldn’t trade the rumored asking price for him, but that’s just me. Nonis might be best off doing nothing of majorproportions until the off season.

Their is no difference between Kesler and Phaneuf’s roles. If Phaneuf was not breaking down (acording to this forum) when he struggled, why would Kesler if moved?

The difference my friend is the price paid to acquire said layer in this instance. Kesler is good yes, better then we have at centre yes, butot wroth what we would need to give up IMO. We aren’t that strng a franchise prospect wise, as I see it.

personally i think gleason has been great for us also. I dont want a trade for picks or prospects right now tho, just good hockey deals. I think a trade involving gardiner for kesler would actually improve our defence because of his two way play. How much would it take? personally I believe kadri and gardiner a very high asking price. I would do gardiner, kulimen and 1st? thats still a high price to pay but worth taking. I would then experiment with kadri on the wing or kesler on the wing that he played for some time this year.

Well im bored and excited for the trade deadline so im going to do an indepth report on toronto and what i think they should do. Two biggest problems in my opinion.. Outside of the first line, leafs have no offense. Kadri-lupul-clarkson/raymond line is just not putting the puck in the net. Also, leafs need one more defenceman that is a shotblocking specialist. I just see way too many pucks getting through against our point shots getting blocked. I think two choices that leafs should pay heavy attention too are ryan kesler (obviously everyones first option) and andrew macdonald, a puck mover that leads the league in blocked shots. Macdonald could seriously be a luxury in the playoffs and will demand a raise around the 2.5-3.5mill range which wont be too bad. Now Im not overly sure what the asking price would be on these two but for me I would close to sell the farm for kesler. If we landed these two we wouldnt be too far off from making a run in the playoffs i would think. Also would love to resign komarov for the playoffs.

To Van: Gardiner, kulimen, + 1st round pick should be a competitive offer IMO.

    To Tor: kesler

    To NYI: percy, 2nd

To Tor: Andrew Macdonald Alot for a pending UFA of this caliber i think, but he’ll garner alot of interest around the league so this is pretty much a late first and 2nd.

    JVR – bozak – kessel
    lupul – kesler – kadri
    raymond – bolland – clarkson
    komarov – mcclement – orr

    Phaneuf – macdonald
    gleason – franson
    reilly – gunnarson
    ranger

    bernier
    reimer

I think kesler and macdonald will really shore up our defence and add an extra offensive punch from our second line. Getting bolland back is also like getting a deadline aquisition from how long hes been out.

Pitt has reportedly already offered, Suter, Despres & a 1st and is nnow willing to sweeten the pot. So I ask how far are you prepared to go?

I would noway in Hell pay that for McDonald who reportedly want 5mil+

    • kessel_leafs81 says:

Thats what he wants but i can see it being another franson deal that will have a bridge contract but land around 3.5.
Theres no way in this league a player who isnt a star goes from 550k to 5+ mill. I dont even think he gets that on the open market. He is exactly what the leafs need tho. And not going to lie I think sutter is overrated has equal value to kulimen. Gardiner has more value then despres IMO, and the first is likely going to be later than Pittsburgh’s IMO. And say we dont go for macdonald, I would offer up kulimen(who is playing center now which doesnt mean much i guess but tech. can play center), gardiner, percy/gauthier 1st. Alot but how long do players like kesler become available and gauthier wont amount to more than a 3rd line center, percy bottom 4 d, but they have value right now so why not? sometimes its worth it to overspend.

      • doorman says:

McDonald is a UFA, there will is no bridge deal to be had.

        • realistic_leafs_fan says:

Yea, I was a little confused on the bridge idea as well. Not sure what MacDonald can get open market, but he will likely want to test it out.

          • kessel_leafs81 says:

bridge deal of some sort i should have said, i just cant see a player with one good season get that large of raise and long term deal despite UFA status, i think he wants out of NYI and snows an idiot so he’ll get dealt and resign with the team around 3-4 mill for 3 years max and then give him the 5+ mill he wants if he keeps up his play and comes top 5 in shot blocking year in and out. Thats his biggest upside and his points are inflated with that amount of injuries on the backend NY has had this year so its a bad idea, and once macdonald figures out the interest isnt there for everytime and hes not worth that much, he’ll resign with the team he’s traded to IMO. On a side note, with a team thats just all around in a shady state as NYI is.. i would demand 5mill myself in order to get traded outta there too.

  5. 93killer93 says:

According to TSN the asking price for Kesler is a young centre age 20-25, a top prospect preferably a forward, and a 1st.
They said if Toronto wants him the package would likely have to be Kadri, Rielly/Gardiner, 1st
If I were Nonis, I would just try to add a guy like Tom Gilbert for now, and wait until the offseason.

HOLY SHIT!!!!! Lou is a Panther

  7. doorman says:

So Gillis the amazing GM he is from the Garth Snow school of stupidity has basically traded two all star goalies for Horvat & Markstrom. I must wonder how much Lou’s comments the other day about Kesler and everyone knowing how stories like that end in Vancity had anything to do with it?
