Flyers set to take a run at Gomez???

The Philadelphia Inquirer weighs in with some of its own speculation regarding some soon to be big name players. The speculate that the Flyers can forget about Briere or Drury but can focus their attention of Scott Gomez.

They go on to say that Gomez would be the perfect fit for the Flyers because of his defensive and offensive style. It is also mentioned that the Flyers ownership is not going to sit around and have another poor season and miss the post season.

HTR believes that there will be many teams that are going to go hard after Gomez. Both Vancouver and Edmonton may also be poised to offer Gomez big contract deals.

I said it before and I'll say it again, The Flyers know Gomez would be an excellent fit, as they've seen him 8 times a year in each of the past 2 seasons. I can see this becoming a reality quite soon.

Unless the Cap goes to $52 million, the Canucks cannot afford Gomez.
He is also unnecessary, that is unless
    1) they make him the 2nd line center, which you don't pay a guy $7 million for;
    or 2) they bump the Sedin lines to the 2nd line, which would in fact be a very wise move;
AND 3) they would have to trade B-Mo for a a couple pucks and some goalie pads to free up cap space.

I don't see him becoming a Nuck. Kariya has the much higher probability of that.

I can't say I'm surprised by this, but as a Flyers fan it's not exactly what I want.  In certain ways, the move to sign Gomez makes sense.  He's a two-way skill player who beings leadership and championship pedigree, seemingly everything Philadelphia needs.

However, as I have stated before, Gomez is the bronze medal when it comes to this year's UFA class.  Briere and Drury will command most of the attention, and that attention is well-deserved.  But Gomez takes long stretches of play off, something that just doesn't sit well with me.

While I normally respect Tim Panaccio and the work he does at the Inquirer, the statement he makes about Drury is puzzling:

"Forget Chris Drury. Every indication is he will end up in San Jose."

Really?  What indications are those, Tim?  Where did you hear this, and who from?

I have heard nothing about Drury to the Tank, has anyone else?

Although Scot Gomez is a star, he does not qualify as a Superstar in my book

I believe he is somewhat overrated, or just hasn't reached his career potential just yet.

Before I hand out 6 mill per year on this guy, I would want to see more improvement and consistency in the goal scoring department.  Although he is a top play-maker, he lacks the goal scoring capabilities of being labeled one of the top players in the league

instead of goalie pads can we get a couple of those rings that whistle wen u blow into them?

  6. beefjerky says:

For sure, and considering who he was playing with, his production does not warrant 6 million+

Im sure hed fit nicely with Gagne though.
Holmgren has done a fantastic job since he took over though, so im pretty sure any move he makes wont be so bad
  7. hockeyhead says:

joe thornton,  patrick marleau and chris drury all at center?

is everyone going to take a pay cut?

    doesnt even make sense.

  8. WYflyerfan says:

I thought he said west coast, like LA . I think that is because he owns a house out there.

  9. cecilturtle says:

Gomez is a really good player when he has someone like a Mogilany to play with…  I believe Gagne could play the roll of Gomez's Mogilany very very well, especially with Knuble's constant team play and going all out every shift in order to get the puck to Gomez and Gagne before crashing his way to the net or getting back on defence.  I get the feeling Gomez centering Gagne and Knubble is a much better fit than the other free agents especially considering his still young-ish age and that his game is still very much on the upswing.  Just my opinion.

even though the leafs are close to  signing sundin, but if they don't they should have big choices this summer of free agency:

    1. sign gomez: 2 year, 6.5 million dollar contract
    2. sign kariya: 3 year, 8.5 million dollar contract
    3. sign drury: 3 year, 9.5 million dollar contract
    4. sign briere: 4 year, 12.5 million dollar contract

  11. flyersdan says:

You are absolutely dreaming at those prices.  More realistic.

    1.  Gomez 4 for $25 million
    2.  Kariya 2 for $8.25 million
    3.  Drury 5 for $32 million
    4.  Briere 5 for $30 million

And I think there is zero chance the leafs get any of these guys.  The flyers however will get one of the centers or the offseason will be seen as a huge disappointment by the fans.

  12. prayin-for-the-wce says:

More like each of these guys are gonna make at least 5million a year.   Realistically they mite shatter that threshold

  13. prayin-for-the-wce says:
Ok upon taking a better look, only Kariya's seems slightly under market value.
  14. BruMagnus says:

    No Deal!

    Those rings are valuable.

  15. BruMagnus says:

    Is this a joke?
Have you not been following anything??
ya Briere will get just over $3 million a year… lmfao.
