Does Boucher feel unloved in the City of Brotherly Love? Will the Bruins trade Guerin or Dafoe and become the Boston Ruins? Are the Devils and GM Lamoriello on the Highway to Hell? Hackett to become a Leaf? In courtesy of Spector’s Trade Rumors

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Chuck Carlton reports Stars general manager Bob Gainey declined to comment on two trade rumours concerning his club. The first, reported yesterday in the New York Post, had the Stars shipping goaltender Ed Belfour and defenceman Richard Matvichuk to Philadelphia as part of a three-way deal. The second, from the Ottawa Sun, had Joe Nieuwendyk being traded to the Senators for “a young player” in return. Carlton dismissed both scenarios as unlikely, given Belfour’s playoff experience and Nieuwendyk’s strong play this season.

BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont reports the surprising success of the Bruins this season makes it all but impossible for the club to consider dealing goalie Byron Dafoe and winger Bill Guerin by the March trade deadline. Dupont suggests trading either player at this point would upset team chemistry heading into the playoffs. Guerin and Dafoe are eligible for unrestricted free agent status this summer.

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports sources tell him New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is concerned he may not have enough resources left to pull off a major deal without drastically overhauling his current roster to do it. The Devils farm system, from which Lamoriello used to draw upon to make many deals in the past, is tapped out of good young talent. Meanwhile, Lamoriello apparently has concerns about his blueline corps. Another source also claims the Devils remain very much interested in dealing centre Jason Arnott to San Jose for Patrick Marleau and a defenceman, believed to be the promising Jeff Jillson.

SLAM! HOCKEY: Kevin Nielsen reports the Toronto Maple Leafs may be looking for an experienced netminder to back up starter Curtis Joseph. The Leafs are believed interested in Montreal’s Jeff Hackett, but Nielsen suggest Toronto may balk at picking up Hackett’s $3 million US salary.

My point of view:

That rumor did sound too weird, but who knows if it could ever happen. Boucher is back in the “I am just a back up” life and therefore he is not playing well (lost to the Penguins). Should Boucher be dealt? The Flyers are expandable because of their three young goalies. Oulette is playing really well in the AHL as well as Little, both goalies have played 20 games or more. Where should Boucher be dealt though? What is he worth? What could the Flyers get in return? Cechmanek is staying a Flyer, nothing more to say about that. What about Eddie the Pigeon? Is it time for the Stars to rebuild? It does not matter what GM Gainey does to this club, since he will resign later in the off-season.

I still would not be surprised if the Bruins will trade either Guerin of Dafoe, most likely Guerin. The Bruins were hot two weeks ago, but lately their scoring madness has cooled down a lot, especially from Guerin. GM O’Connell is not the smartest general manager, maybe he would be interested in offering another enforcer style player 5 million dollars a year and forget about Guerin?

I was surprised to hear what Everson had to say, but I agree with him. Looking at the Devils farm system, the Albany River Rats, the team sits at the very bottom of the AHL league. The team’s players are also performing poorly as their numbers are satisfactory but mostly below average, and losing Pierre Dagenais (scored his first goal as a Panther) did not make the situation better. Who can GM Lamoriello trade? Watching the Devils lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning (TB won the series against NJ 2-0-1-1) is starting to make fans wonder if the team will ever turn around. What can Lamoriello do? The Devils should win the next three games (Panthers, Thrashers, Wild) which could help their record, confidence, and maybe it could be the spark to light it up for the Devils, will they though? Who should the Devils trade in order to improve the team? Gionta? Berglund? Too young to be traded, and GM Lamoriello has to keep his young talent which was mostly traded for playoff players. Could the Devils perform well without Holik or Arnott? The team is still in need of a quality back up, and a true goal scorer. Daneyko is not worth much and the same goes for Randy McKay. If the Devils want to make an offer for Fredrik Modin, it could cost them too much. Maybe the Devils should attempt to deal Arnott to the Sharks for Marleau and maybe Jeff Jillson, but I would not take a chance on Marleau.

Leafs interested in Hackett? They don’t have much to offer for Hackett, maybe just Hoglund. There is no way that the Leafs will land Hackett. I actually don’t think any team would want to trade for such a high injury prone goaltender who makes 3 million dollars, and is still trying to get back in shape after his shoulder injury.

Thank you,

Micki Peroni
