Foote in a Jacket

Sportsnet is reporting that Adam Foote has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets for three Years, $13.5 million. Not sure if the Blue Jackets are ready for this type of signing but welcome to the new NHL.

I really hope Foote beats some sense into Klesla.

Zherdev and Nash are still the future of this team though.

The type of deal I would expect for Foote though I still think he isn’t worth it. Seems like a right move for the youngbucks of Columbus.

  2. Desertdog17 says:

Great addition for the jackets! lets just hope he puts up the points and shows the leadership he should with that kind of money!

  3. OilersRush says:

Now this I did not expect, but I understand it Columbus needs a good defencemen like Adam there defence was poor, now it improved alot.

  4. Lint07 says:

Great, great signing. Way to go, B’ Jacks!

Apparently the Habs just pulled out of the Adrian Aucoin derby which pisses me off to no end because I wanted either Aucoin or Foote in Montreal.

  5. Scruffy05 says:

Foote is a rock on Defense. Good ol’ Canadian boy. I may be biased but I have a softspot for Canaidan D-men.

If his physical attributes don’t scare off opposing forwards then dammit, he should be ugly enough to do it. Also a good role model for a young team.

My gut feeling is that Columbus isn’t done here. Watch them pick up a high profile playmaking centre to set up Nash and Zherdev. Not Forsberg, if I know the Jackets they will go for somebody faster and sleeker. They pride on speed and while Fozzy isn’t slow by any stretch of the imagination, he is an injury liability that I doubt the Jackets would jump at. They may possibly go after Allison (taking away yet another Leaf hopeful) or even possibly a Trugeon though I doubt it. Columbus will be buyers and and just over 4 million to Foote proves that.

  6. habswinthecup-again says:

What do you mean they “just pulled out of the Adrian Aucoin derby “. That is the one signing that the Habs have to make.

  7. Lint07 says:

Apparently Aucoin wants too much money and Gainey backed off.

We’ll see what happens, I guess.

  8. Scruffy05 says:

    Where are you hearing this?

  9. Scruffy05 says:

And yes Allison is an injury liability as well… But he is a much CHEAPER injury liability

  10. hendextall says:

I just read that too, over on spectors

  11. TheAwaKe says:

i confirm… RDS, french station reported that news

  12. Lint07 says:

Watch ’em go after Zhamnov now…

  13. Foppa12 says:

This would be a great signing for Columbus but two things pop up immeadiately in my head. 1st, the league max is $7.8 next season, so how is he signing for over that? 2nd is that Adam Foote has been quoted in the press here in Denver, and I believe by Terry Frye as saying he will leave Colorado only to play close to his hometown; so either Toronto or Ottawa (Toronto being the obvious 1st choice). So this seems a bit off to me.

  14. Scruffy05 says:

Wouldn’t surprise me… Next move will be for a centre, just wait and see.

  15. hendextall says:

He signed for $4.5 a year

  16. Scruffy05 says:

Take the 12.5 and divide it by 3 years (Length of his contract)… Equal 4.5 per years…

And apparently Terry Frye was either

    a) lied to

    b) had Foote change his mind

    c) pulled it out of his ass to ease Colorado fans afraid of a gutted team

  17. PensFansRejoice says:

Columbus overpaid for him in my opinion. Hes never healthy.

/me wonders whether this will set the line on who gets what from here on…

  18. OilersRush says:

All it means is even with a cap players are still going to get paid good money.

Yes it may not be as much as before, but they will still get the bucks.

  19. mikster says:

Without the salary cap, this would not have happened as Foote would have taken a $4.5-5M per year deal from a playoff contender.

It’s a great addition for the B’Jacks, although i think $4.5M is stretching it. He is 34, quite injury prone, and maybe too slow now with the new rule changes?

    Good addition nonetheless.

  20. canadaboy25 says:

Damn! Foote was the one talented player that the leafs had a great chance at getting. This move definitley suprises me but the Jackets are one of those doormat teams that was expected to be big buyers in the FA market under the new CBA. The Leafs are now going to have to push hard for Gonchar. He’s the next best option that wont demand 7.8 mil.

With Foote, Roberts, and Newindyek already signed and Modano ready to ink a deal as early as tommorow, it can be expected that Forsberg, Naslund, Niedermyer and Khabbibulin will find new homes a lot sooner than expected.

  21. Scruffy05 says:

You make it sound as if Nazzy is gaurunteed to be leaving Vancouver… I doubt he would do that to his good buddy Bertuzzi… It would be like a slap in the face to Todd after he signed that multiyear contract to play with his friend.

  22. bhudson says:

Foote is now the 3rd highest paid defenceman behind only Blake and Lidstrom.

With this signing, he recieved a 7% increase on his 2003-04 salary, whereas all signed players took a 24% rollback, and in the majority of signings so far, players have taken even higher rollbacks from 03-04 (Zubov: 34% rollback, Ozolinsh: 50% rollback).

Why did Foote get a raise?!?!

I think that these first couple signings will fluctuate alot, because with more players, greater bidding wars can potentially happen while teams have more room under the cap. Once a certain threshold of signings happens, player value will drop because each team will have less room under the cap. Smart move by Footes agent, I think theres a good chance that he might end up being the 5th or 6th top paid D-Man in the NHL this year, while barely breaking the top 20 in terms of value.

This signing may put pressure on Niedermayer, Gonchar, Aucoin and Hatcher to find similar deals before clubs cannot afford them.

  23. Scruffy05 says:

Good point. I also believe the ‘frenzy’ will come soon. I think it will start picking up and speeding up and maybe by the end of this week or next we will have a damn good idea what will be happening with the league…

  24. Flyer_Dman says:

    Learn math.

  25. Flyer_Dman says:

I don’t get this at all.

I love everything about the way Foote plays defense. But he has soo much working against him.

    1) He is signed from age 34-37

    2) He is slow and gritty and not the prototype dman of the new NHL

    3) He is ridiculously injury prone

To restate a comment that was made above: all things considered he is not at all deserving of being the 3rd highest paid dman in the league.

But hey, he absolutely fits well in Columbus and I wish the team the best. It would be nice to see Columbus, Nashville, and Atlanta make a major improvement this year as a direct result of the new CBA.

And good for Foote for getting signed while teams still had room to overpay him.

  26. nordiques100 says:

dont forget zubov signed for 4 mil a year and ozolinsh signed for 2.7 roughly so the market went up for D men.

  27. masarume says:

If gonchar signs with us, I’ll beat you silly.

Sergei is good, but really isn’t what we need right now. Believe it or not, Kaberle and McCabe is more than enough offense from our blueline.

Though Sergei can florish under the new rules, I would be quite dissappointed if he did sign with us.
