Forsberg a Ranger?

Eklund at is reporting that he has spoken with a source “very close to the situation” that says the New York Rangers may be Peter Forsberg’s #1 choice if he is to return to the NHL this season.

Eklund’s source says that Forsberg would “most like” to play for the Rangers, but that the Red Wings and Flyers would also be in contention.

The source also says that a signing with the Rangers or Flyers would be for Forsberg’s “personal reasons”.

Opinion: I’m not sure what personal reasons he would have to go to the Rangers. My only stab at what the connection would be is the fact that he and Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist are both Swedish, and he also has a past history playing with Chris Drury.

Anything is possible, but the Rangers I mean come on?

  2. mikster says:

I’d like to as a Rangers fan, but i doubt that is true. Renney would make him play defensive hockey and he will still use what in his mind is a shut down unit in Hollweg-Betts-Orr almost 10 minutes per game.

I read the title, then clicked to read the article, and stopped reading at Eklund. Anything that follows is surely not worth reading.

  4. Kramer says:

This deal first has to get clearance from the bookies and the Brooklyn mafia.  If "Big Papa" gives the o.k. sign, it might happen, but only because he's certain that Forsberg won't make a difference one iota on whether the Rangers do anything this spring.

As I said previously, there's a conspiracy to keep the cup out of NY, and it involves the local bookies, the elite media and the mob.

  5. the_word says:

My sources say Eklund has down syndrome (E4).

  6. pezzz says:

kramer are you alright??….we're not in tennis here we're in hockey and I can assure you that your theory is idiot and that if the Boston Bruins are still in the playoffs, it's not because of the Mafia, nor W Bush, nor the speed of the wind, nor the volume of your brain. Same thing for the Rangers and for any other team in the league. period.

  9. leafy says:

Why would the Rangers want another washed up superstar, they already have Jagr. Haha!

  10. NYI365-318J1 says:

first of all Eklund is a joke but if forsberg did go to the rangers it would most likly be to collect an extra large retirement check… …as far as winning goes he would have a much better chance with detroit vancouver ottawa or even toronto… …forsberg is too old, he has had way to many injuries and he has not played in an NHL game in a while. i think if he dose return he will underachive unless he plays with his sweed friends on detroit vancouver or ottawa… …rangers SUCK!!!… …LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!

  11. leafy says:

Best goal scorer ever: Mike Bossy

I hated the Islanders back in the early 80s but one guy I loved on that team was Mike — quick, accurate and powerful shot!

Today's goal scorers are a joke compared to Bossy….even Ovechkin and Kovalchuk.

  12. mozzy says:

This makes no sense. The rangers are not evenm a contender and already have a mess of ununsed talent. Plus, Forsberg HATES the Rangers and NY!

Honestly people – why do you listen to Eklund? This guy is such a knob. He basically makes trade umours up himself, and tell's everyone it's from a "mystery source".

Anyone can put their own website up and write garbage. Seriously though, check out spectorshockey if you want reliable info.

  16. habsoverserver says:

i heard it was the texas rangers and he wants to play shortstop.

  17. Caper17 says:

Now eklund is saying that Forsberg may not even return to the NHL. Oh, and his original post said Forsberg to return NHL with Flyers, Rangers, Red Wings (E4).

    Great fun wha?

  18. leafy says:

If W Bush was still owner, I wouldn't rule it out.  Same guy that traded Sammy Sosa….among other mistakes.

Today he is saying either 'not playing at all' or Philli.  This is why you don't give any actual thought to Eklund predictions:

  21. UsedandAbused says:

It will be the Flyers.. Rangers have no shot.

  22. BryanWay says:

Agreed that this is totally stupid.  Apparently, any team that thinks they have a shot at the cup similarly has the idea that they have a shot at Forsberg.  I don't understand how Detroit, Ottawa, or the Rangers have anything to do with this.  Forsberg said if he was going to return, he was going back to one of the teams he played for previously.  That's Colorado, Nashville, or Philadelphia.  With all the idiotic speculation, why believe anything that doesn't come directly from Forsberg's mouth?

Honestly, if I were Forsberg, I'd take a job where I wasn't expected to be the savior.  With Sakic and Smyth injured, Nashville's fire sale after last season, and the fact that both teams currently sit out of a playoff spot, Philadelphia looks like the most likely candidate.  Both Holmgren and Gagne have been in touch with him since the trade (by their own admissions), and almost everyone that plays in Philadelphia seems to think it's a high-class organization.  Between that, his chemistry with Gagne, and Philadelphia's balanced scoring, I think it's almost a lock.

Philadelphia has always had a penchant for attracting top talent in the off-season.  Roenick, Forsberg, Briere, Timonen… I don't know, it seems natural for him to go back.

  23. canuckstocup says:

Don't take this as a shot against you personally but it's funny that you said 'why believe anything that doesn't come directly from Forsberg's mouth' because correct me if I'm wrong but the comment about Forsberg only wanting to play for teams that he has previously played for was actually just speculation to begin with. For some reason that was speculated once (by TSN is think) and it has now circulated around enough that people take it for fact and it usually quoted by Flyers and Avs fans. With that being said forsberg it an unusually loyal player and I do think he will likely sign with Philly. As a point of his loyalty he did actually state when he left the Avs that he would not sign with either Vancouver or Detroit out of respect for the fans due to the rivalries Colarado had with those two teams at the time. I really hope that he has changed his mind since then and signs with Vancouver because we really need his help but I doubt it.

  24. Nans says:

Eklund is an idiot (E5).  He uses the "E" initial because he is on a good amount of E when he comes up with it.

  25. Jrugges says:

Are you serious? The rangers a cup contender? Does eklund realize that he can't quite trick people anymore. Doesn't he atleast realize the rangers prolly aren't cup contenders sitting in last place,(Behind the Islanders). I can completely understand the redwings and philly. Both are 1st in there divisions, have a good shot at a cup run with Forsberg, especailly detroit sitting 1st overall without him. But come on the RANGERS!!! AHAHAH welp Eklund got his ratings up by posting an outragous rumor again.

  26. Biggzy says:

Eklund is a complete faggot. That guy talks so much trash its ridiculous. Not once have I heard one of his ridiculous rumors from "close sources" come true. I hope you get maimed or burned in a fire you *****in piece of shit.

  27. BruMagnus says:

THERE's this NEW SUPERSOURCE, his name is Magnus Bru, and he spoke with sources "very close" to the Penguins head office and he is reporting with the Pens' injury to Crosby, the Pens are heavily targeting Forsberg to ensure they make the playoffs.

The same "source" then interviewed Foppa in his hotel room over some champagne and Foppa told him that he indeed doesn't want to return to the Aves or Flyers, IS interested in joining the Canucks but doesn't like their chances, and is even MORE interested in joining the Penguins to eventually play with Crosby, in his words, the world's best player!!

    Interesting indeed!!!!

  28. BruMagnus says:

I've also debated and tried to convince people that Mike Bossy is one of the top 2 goal scorers of all-time. His numbers are simply incredible, and had he played longer who knows.

However, the number 1 goal scorer is Mario, not only because he dominated and scored in an era more difficult to score in, but also because he could single handedly take games over, and he scored more.

  29. leafy says:

Indeed, Lemieux is one of the best players ever, period.  He scored more goals because he could deke an entire team out of its jock strap.

But by goal scorer, I mean "pure" goal scorer like Brett Hull, Niewendyk, Selanne, Bossy, etc.  And from all the "pure" goal scorers, I truly believe Bossy was the best.  It seemed like every time he shot the puck, it was a goal.

Bru, do you remember the classic playoff Pittsburgh-Islanders 1982?  Truly a forgotten classic, but I remember it vividly.  The Pens came so close to upsetting the mighty Islanders.  What a series that was.

  30. JohnnyCash says:

''I'm not sure what personal reasons he would have to go to the Rangers.''

Well, say you want to spend time in a US city, regardless of the team quality, would you rather be in Detroit, Philadelphia, Denver or New York? If money's not a problem, I'm sure a lot of people would prefer New York. I know I would.

  31. BruMagnus says:

Unfortunately I don't remember much back then.

  32. leafy says:

Come on Bru, this is classic Penguins history every Pens fan should know about.

Allow me to brief you.  It was a best of 5 series, Round 1.  The Islanders demolished the Pens in the first 2 games at Nassau Colliseum.

It looked like a certain 3-game sweep, right?  WRONG!

The Penguins won Game 3 barely on Rick Kehoe's OT goal (see link below).  Then they eked out a Game 4 win too.

This set up a Game 5 showdown on Long Island.  The Pens were up 3-1 with 7 minutes left in regulation!!!!!  It looked like the Pens would upset the migthy Islanders.

But the Isles score to make it 3-2.  And then, with about 1 minute left, John Tonelli scores to tie the game on a Randy Caryle boenhead giveaway.  Then Tonelli scores the OT winner as well, and the Isles go on to win their 3rd straight Cup easily after that.

I was 13 years old back then, but I remember it vividly.

Check out the Game 3 goal by Kehoe:

  33. BryanWay says:

I had heard that it came from the man himself, but I most certainly could be wrong.  It's too long ago for me to source that quote, and it could have been speculation after all.

  34. NYI365-318J1 says:

fun fact time: did you know that Mike Bossy has the best goals per game average all time in the regular season and is second to mario in the playoffs. also he is the only player to score 50 or more goals in nine straight seasons. i completely agree Mike Bossy is the best goal scorer of all time. he was also the second player ever to score 50 goals in 50 games, he had set a new record in his first year for goals by a rookie and obviously won 4 cups in a row… …the last tru dynasty in the NHL… …so far. but thanks for remembering the BOSS so many people seem to forget or not realize at all that he is the best goal scorer of all time.

  35. leafy says:

Indeed I'm aware of those amazing feats by Bossy.  In addition, he has the best points per game ratios in NHL history after Gretzky and Lemieux.  Most people don't know that.

Just think, during the 1977 draft, GM Bill Torrey was going to select a checker instead of Bossy, but coach Arbour preferred the scorer (Bossy), because he could teach him to check.  Gotta love Al.

That whole NY Islanders team was dynamite.  I remember the 1st round of the 1981 playoffs against my Leafs.  The Isles swept the series in 3 games.  The scores were something like 10-1, 9-0 and 7-1.  And people think the Leafs are bad now.

  36. BruMagnus says:

I was much younger, and if I had vivid memories of then, I'd probably have been a Canucks fan as they reached the Finals (and lost naturally) that year, didn't they? I seriously don't remember much til Mario's 2nd and 3rd seasons (I have his rookie card still, worth a lot too!).
