Free advice for the Maple Leafs

I’m new and I’m guessing that HockeyBuzz is a bad word around here, but Daniel Tolensky has posted a great column about “Stanley Cup Winning GMs and Some Free Advice for MLSE’s Board of Directors”. I think that he is 100% bang on. I really like the Bob Nicholson (Pres) and Steve Tambellini (GM) combo and totally agree the time to act is now, and not in the new year or the summer. Way too many important decisions to be made to wait.

Have a read. Thoughts?

I read Tolensky's article yeserday.  Excellent work for sure.

What I found most interesting is that among the Cup winning GMs of the past 39 years, most of them didn't play in the NHL and/or sucked as players, e.g., Pollock, Sather, Torrey, Lamoriello, Allen, Holland, Lacroix, Schmidt, Burke, Devellano, Feaster, Fletcher, and Grundman.

Only Serge Savard and Bob Gainey could be classified as NHL stars, and Jim Rutherford was a pretty good goalie.  But that's about it.

Take home message: it is better to hire a qualified GM rather than one who was an NHL star.

THE LEAFS NEED SOMEONE WITH THE BALLS TO GIVE PLAYERS LIKE  JUSTIN POGGE A CHANCE AND STOP SIGNING OLD, OVERPAYED,  AND UNPROVEN PLAYERS…..I AM A HABS FAN, BUT I STILL FEEL FOR A TEAM THAT IS BEING RUN INTO THE GROUND BY BONEHEAD DECISIONS…..GOTTA BE PATIENT AND DEVELOP YOUR TEAM OVER TIME….THE SENATORS DID IT. IT TOOK ALMOST TEN YEARS, BUT THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE……PROPERLY

We do have to be patient if we are rebuilding but those two guys would be a great start. Plus we are handcuffed with big salarys as we've heard COUNTLESS times, but i say we give guys like Clemmensen, Jeremy williams and Gamache a chance to play. They deserve a shot, and couldnt be any worse than Stajan, Steen, Battaglia, the guys who would rather skate to the outside istead of getting in the slot and get quality chances!
