Free agency status: Zednik and Theodore

A source close to the Canadiens has disclosed some information regarding the contract negotiations of Richard Zednik and José Theodore.Despite Theodore’s prolonged holdout, the source said that the goaltender has never considered not signing with the club. Theo and his agent, Don Meehan, are simply using time as a bargaining power in order to squeeze as much money from the Canadiens as possible. There is no question as to whether Theodore will play for Montreal this upcoming season, it is just a matter of when he will sign.
The Habs are hoping Theo will sign before the start of training camp. Last time the Hart- and Vezina-winning goaltender held out for a new contract, it affected his play significantly, and the Canadiens can’t afford to have him lose his value to the team. It was Theodore’s outstanding – and at times above-human – goaltending that kept the Canadiens alive during the regular season, and that guided them into the playoffs and past the Bruins.

As for Zednik, the chances of the winger signing with the team appear to be unlikely. Apparently, the Canadiens and Zednik are at odds for a large sum of money, and since, unlike Theodore, Zednik has no ties to the city of Montreal, he will likely hold out until he is either offered what he wants, or is traded.
The Canadiens might suffer from the loss of Zednik, who was their second-leading scorer last year with 22 goals and 22 assists for 44 points. He was also one of only 3 Canadiens to play in all 82 games. However, the team has already prepared a way to fill Zednik’s void, in the form of Mariusz Czerkawski. As well, Randy McKay might see more playing time if Zed leaves the Habs. Montreal knows that while the loss of Zednik may not be so painful, the loss of Theodore would be deathly.
GO HABS GO.

I think that the Habs would find it in their interest to trade Zednik for a player of a little less value so that they can spend that much more on keeping Theodore happy. The only reason that Zednik was the second highest scorer last season was because Koivu and Audette were injured for the majority of the season.

The Habs are already hard up for scoring, loosing Zednik’s scoreing would be killer for the Canadiens.

  3. IslesFan17 says:

Losing his 44 points wouldn’t be a killer.

Czerkawski was dumped do to inconsistency and lack of effort and he still put up 50 points.

  4. titans says:

When you have as little scoring as they do, it’ll kill ya. Plus Zednik if healthy will give ya more than 44 points this year. He’s getting better.

JUST THINK OF WHAT THE HABS COULD GET IF THEY PUT ZEDNIK ON THE TRADING BLOCK WITH HACKETT AND JUNEOU………..

WHAT COULD THEY GET FOR THOSE GUYS???

  6. Angelius says:

I don’t know how you came up with this post , but it cannot be right. If you watched the bruins series Zednik played a HUGE part in them winning, and when he got hurt Theo said that he would get even with the bruins for hurting his buddy Zed. They are known to be good friends. And i think that getting ride of Zed would upset Theo further. Zed is a big part of the canadians offense, and cannot be replaced by Mackay.

Just a suggestion of something that would make it interesting.

    To Vancouver

    – Zednik

    – Hackett

    – Juneau

    To Montreal

    – Henrik Sedin

    – Daniel Sedin

    However i would do it.

Since i’m a Pens/Avs/Habs fan who also like the Trashers (Ilya) and Nucks.

    Deal makes some sense.

I would like to see Paul Kariya, but they would probably have to throw in a prospect like (D) Ron Hainsey.

  10. TheRumourGod says:

All the players are pretty good firends usually. If there is a problem between people, they tend to get rid of one of them. Theo will be fine without Zednik…

  12. IslesFan17 says:

It would take more than Hackett, Juneau and Zednik to get Kariya. Zednik isn’t half the player Kariya is and Anaheim doesn’t need a goalie.

  13. Leaf_Expert says:

THIS IS WHAT THEY COULD GET:

    Boston:Zednik

    Rivet

    2nd round-draft pick

    Montreal:Rolston

    5th round-draft pick

U CAN FIX THAT TRADE HOWEVER YOU WANT BUT WITH OUT A DOUBT THE HABS ARE EXTREMLY INTERESTED IN TRADING FOR ROLSTON AND A TRADE WOULD LOOK VERY SIMULAR TO WHAT I HAVE POSTED.

  14. PensRuleAll says:

Who cares if the habs want Rolston if boston wont trade him

  15. bruinfan37 says:

Oh dear god.. thats a crazy trade!!!!! If the bruins made that trade, they should get their asses kicked

  16. acebailey says:

    Boston Gets: Zednick and Hackett

Habs Get: McClarren and either Raycroft or that goalie they just picked up in the draft last summer.

  17. Canucks1stCup says:

not really… Juneau doesnt have the speed to play in the western conference and the canucks will essentially lose a very productive line (in the future). the twins have shown signs of greatness and the nucks have learned time and time again that you have to be patient with these guys (naslund, neely, bertuzzi)…so i dont think you will see them go. besides, the twins are Burke’s legacy…he will never trade them…and vancouver doesnt need Hackett…Zednik would be a nice addition…the canucks could try trading Schaefer and something else, but who knows what the Habs are looking for.

  18. nixter says:

THERE IS NO WAY ROLSTON AND OR RAYCROFT AND OR THE FINNISH GOALIE DRAFTED THIS SUMMER ARE GOING ANYWHERE. THEY ARE ALL UNTOUCHABLES……………….keep dreaming.

  19. Stanajax says:

McLaren to Montreal and Zednik to Boston!!!!!!!!!! Ahahahahahahaha, you’re so funny……..or damn stupid!!!

  20. Stanajax says:

You’re right. Raycroft and your Finnish goalie are nothing. We’ve got at least 4 goaltending prospects that can make the NHL, and Théodore is still very young.

Rolston for Zednik is just stupid too, cos they’ll never be another big deal between Habs and B’s until Harry Sinden is dead!!!
