Christ, Belak is the only Leafs not guaranteed another couple of seasons.

  2. ranger_fan says:

I don't like the depth thaaat much. Some of those guys will not be availible. Hedican will probably retire, Sakic and Lidstrom will never leave. So Thornton, Marleau, and Iginla is better than Drury Briere Sundin and Giguere? (Yes Sundin would be on this list a year ago)

  3. habswinthecup-again says:

And just how is this group any better than this years?

  4. tucksfan says:

i thought kilger, steen, wellwood and stajan were also free agents but i looked into it and im wrong.

  5. Moose161 says:

Iginla and Kiprusoff could get extremely intersting because unless the Flames cut their team payroll a lot this year I don't see how they will be able to keep botha at 7 million a piece.

  6. flamingsenator says:

kips already at 3.5….so halfway there….if the cap goes up by 3 mil this year….then the flames will do it…so long as they dont overspend this year….or atleast just sign one year contracts(PLEASE)

im surprised that iggy and kip havent been signed yet… least ONE of them

i also think that iggy should take a 1-0.5 mil pay cut….just cuz 7 mil is too much….but will see wat happens

the tricky thing here is…..they can be a contender next season with some key signings this summer

  7. Sharks06 says:

Thornton and Marleau wont go anywhere, in fact Doug Wilson is already talking about long term extensions for both of them before NEST season even starts.

  8. Tops04 says:

Every year someone does this post, and every year we end up with a pool of players like this year. Waiting for Iginla, Thornton and Marleau is silly considering at least 2 of the 3 will be signed before they become available.

Want one of those guys… trade picks and prospects. And make sure you know they're going nowhere.

  9. BruMagnus says:

I totally agree. I had heard 09's UFAs would be strong, but looking at that list, and the fact that half of the 1st tier guys will be re-signed, I don't think it's that strong at all.

  10. BruMagnus says:

I completely disagree that it is a much better crop.
To start with, many of these players will have extensions given throughout the year.

Next, let's deal with the top UFAs.
    As I see them:
Bryzgalov (who will be traded for a good return this offseason, or if Giggy isn't re-signed will be re-signed by the Ducks during the season)
Iginla/Kiprusoff. One of these two will be given an extension SOON. They'll probably choose Kipper, so Iggy could become a free agent if he doesn't accept a hometown discount.
Sakic and Lidstrom will both re-sign for whatever they want.
Toskala will be traded (if not Nabokov will and Toskala will be extended)
Thornton will be re-signed, and either Marleau will too, or he'll be traded at last. Though with the Cap rising I bet he is also re-signed. There is a small chance he is lost to Free Agency as the Sharks won't trade him by the deadline, that's for sure.

Boyle could be available if the Bolts want to save some money. But he's been their defensive backbone for years. Demitra might be a good option if he is not re-signed, but he's also getting on in years. Straka will be a good 2nd tier UFA if he's not re-signed again by the Rangers. Hossa could be available. As might Heatley (hopefully the Pens get him!). In fact all three Sens would have many takers. Fisher will probably be re-signed long term by the Sens. Lastly, Naslund will be worth about $2-3 million by then.

  11. BrianColangeloNHLGM says:

This is just the FA list, those boys are all RFA because they are too young / havent played enough seasons to be a free agent yet

  12. hockeyfreak64 says:

The source I used was a site that was called Irish blues, i think. It will be transferred to July 1st

  13. hockeyfreak64 says:

When I mean much better crop, The superstars are pretty much the same. Its the second-third tier UFAs that make the crop better. Guys like Cooke, Eaton, Prospal, Fisher, Straka, Roszival, Satan, Pandolfo, Dumont, Legwand, Mason, Huet, Rolston, Visnovsky, Smith, Draper, Zubov, Liles, Brunette, Vyborny, Williams, Langkow, Regher, Huselius, Stillman, Commodore, Hecht, Campbell, Ward, Hedberg, and Kunitz.

Not sure where to post this but meh:

    (Yashin Horror Version)

    Heatley   Spezza     Alfredsson
    Hartnell   Fisher     Neil
    Vermette Yashin     Kelly
    Eaves     McAmmond   Saprykin
    Pitkanen      Phillips
    Volchenkov    Schubert
    Corvo         Mezaros

    Comrie: UFA
    Priessing: UFA
    Gerber: To the Bruins
                or Capitals (Steve Eminger? *drools*)
or Panthers (Jacques Martin says no?)
                or Aves
Probably for two 2nd round Picks in '08 and '09.
Most likely: Bought out for a 1.2k cap hit over 4 years.

Schaefer: to the Lightning for a 2nd Rounder
    Signed: Hartnell, Yashin, McAmmond, Emery.

Trades: Joni Pitkanen for Wade Redden straight up.

    Post-Move Salary Cap

    Heatley, Dany       5.5
    Alfredsson, Daniel 5.451
    Spezza, Jason      5.0
    Hartnell, Scott      3.0
    Yashin, Alexei      2.0
    Fisher, Mike         1.5
    Neil, Chris           1.1
    Saprykin, Oleg     1.1
    Vermette, Antoine 1.0
    McAmmond, Dean 1.0
    Eaves, Patrick        .942
    Kelly, Chris            .725
    McGrattan, Brian     .525
    Bois, Danny            .450

            Sub-Total: 29.293
    Phillips, Chris     3.750
    Corvo, Joseph       2.625
    Pitkanen, Joni      2.5
    Volchenkov, Anton   2.5
    Meszaros, Andrej    0.984
    Schubert, Christoph 0.525
    Nycholat, Lawrence  0.463
             Sub-Total: 13.347
    Emery, Ray          2.60
    Kelly Guard         0.60
    Gerber Buy-Out      1.20

            Sub-Total:  3.72

Actual Cap Available: 48 or 52k

             Total Cap: 46.11k
     New Cap Space(44): -2.41
     New Cap Space(48): 1.59
     New Cap Space(52): 5.53

As for signings this year, even if the cap is raised to 52k, the Sens
will need that space when Heatley, Spezza, and Fisher have their contracts
come up after the end of next season. If it is 52kk, they will be able to resign all three but have absolutely no space afterwards.

  15. tucksfan says:

kilger had been in for a while now

  16. tucksfan says:

  17. Pedro says:

This article serves no purpose. Players will sign extentions and teams needs change over the season. By the time this has any meaning the list will look different.
Why don't we waste are time with this years list.

  18. Glucker says:

not to mention this year;s UFAs, who may be signed to 1 year deals arent on this list, Sundin just signed 1 year, Peca will sign 1 year…

  19. kamullia says:

Not criticizing, just correcting the erroneous.

These jumped out at me because I know the Penguins pretty good, but I imagine there are other errors being that 3 out of the 4 Pens listed are not free agents. For good or bad, all of Laraque, Ruutu, and Malone are signed through the 2007/2008 season. Only Ekman is an FA to-be.

Just to supply some info, unless someone can supply an accurate source, the following is the list of the Pens FAs:

Colby Armstrong, Maxime Talbot, Michel Ouellet, Chris Thorburn, Erik Christensen, Ryan Whitney.

Mark Recchi, Nils Ekman, Gary Roberts, Ronald Petrovicky, Josef Melichar, Eric Cairns, Robert Scuderi, Alain Nasreddine, Joel Kwiatkowski, Micki Dupont, Jocelyn Thibault.

  20. kamullia says:

I completely forgot that he had been traded by San Jose to PIT around the deadline time. He is set to be a group VI UFA, but I think this is just technical.

You would expect that since Shero gave away a pick (even if in the 7th round), he has plans for him within the organization. This was a trade that was separate to any other, so it was not consequential. Therefore I expect he will be signed before he actually becomes a UFA. And since I opened the can of worms, I might as well put in my expectations of what Shero will do with the Pens list:

Wants to re-sign: Armstrong, Talbot, Whitney, Recchi, Roberts
Wants to forget: Ekman, Dupont, Cairns, Kwiatkowski

The rest are on the bubble for one reason or another, most (especially the Ds) I expect will become free-agents even if only briefly (if not signed at the last minute), depending on which better players Shero gets a feel he can land at the start of Free-agency.

  21. Sedin23 says:

They also have to re-sign Langkow, Huselius, Regher, and Phanuef.

  22. Sedin23 says:

Why would Philly trade a good cheap young player for an overpaid aging d man.

  23. CaptainAvery says:

And Oiler fans thought Ryan Smyth wasn't going anywhere and what happened, don't be so sure Marleau will be sticking around in the long haul.

  24. oil_ers says:

The Oilers should add some players this year..but save up for next year
    and pick up Igi
I'm sure he'd love to be the captain of his hometown oilers

  25. oil_ers says:

The Oilers should add some players this year..but save up for next year
    and pick up Igi
I'm sure he'd love to be the captain of his hometown oilers

  26. oil_ers says:

Oilers should get some guys this year…a solid forward and d man…but should unload next year and pick up igi

he'd love to captain his hometown team

  27. SkruinBruin says:

Rumor has it, the Bruins may resign Alexi Zhamnov…

  28. NYIGoalie23 says:

Miro Satan isn't a free agent, he still has 1 more year left on his contract.  I'm sure thats not the only error on this list too.

  29. Radio says:

For the same reason they'd take an injury prone Forsberg.

  30. Radio says:

    That's why it says 08-09.

    Not 07-08.

  31. Lazarus says:

Thats because this is the list of Free Agents for after the 07-08 season, not a list of current free agents.

  32. kamullia says:

You are absolutely correct. I simply speed-read through it and made a mistake. I apologize for my out-of-context post.

In my defense, most know this hardly ever happens with me, if it has ever happened before at all. But I guess there is always a first time, isn’t there?

  33. Kashin says:

wow the sharks are screwed. I dont think they will be able to sign both marleu and thorton this time around.

  34. NYIGoalie23 says:

    I stand corrected.  Sorry.

Flames are Screwed because of this
