Gainey IS still looking!

I found this on CJAD web site TODAY!

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey hasn’t given up on upgrading his team through free agency. Gainey confirming to CJAD’s Abe Hefter that although the Habs lost out on the Brendan Shanahan sweepstakes, he believes there’s talent remaining out there that could help the Canadiens, up front. Gainey, at the Martin Lapointe Arena to watch the prospects take to the ice, says it became pretty clear that unrestricted free agent economics would prevent the Canadiens from signing more than one player. And with plenty of wiggle room left within the salary cap, there’s money to spend — for the right player, added the GM.

This is the present situation with the Habs for 2006-2007

    Saku Koivu $4.75 million

    Alexei Kovalev $4.5 million

    Cristobal Huet $3 million

    Craig Rivet $2.47 million

    Sheldon Souray $2.432 million

    Radek Bonk $2.394 million

    Andrei Markov $2 million

    Richard Zednik $1.976 million

    Mike Ribeiro $1.9 million

    Francis Bouillon $1.875M million

    Mathieu Dandenault $1.7 million

    Mike Komisarek $946,900

    Andrei Kostitsyn $801,800

    Christopher Higgins $673,000

    Steve Begin $646,000

    Mark Streit $600,000

    Garth Murray $575,000

    Jean-Philippe Cote $495,000

    Aaron Downey $475,000

    Tomas Plekanec $450,000

Total = 34,659,700 (data from TSN)

    Still left to sign (RFA)

David Aebischer (let’s assume around 2.5 mil.)

Micheal Ryder (let’s assume around 2.5 mil.)

Tomas Plekanec (let’s assume around 1 mil.)

Alexander Perezhogin (let’s assume around 1 mil.)

Cote will start the season with Hamilton (most likely, we already have 7 defensemen with Streit), that gives us a total team salary of around 41 million.

The smart thing would be to trade Aebischer and have Denis as a backup, that would give us another 2 million to play with.

My take: Gainey will not do anything major, he will wait for the trade deadline to see who is selling. The Habs also have a LOT of UFA (Markov, Rivet,Souray, Ribeiro and Zednik) and some RFA next season, if he wants to retain most of them, he better save some room.

If he decides to add something on the UFA market, it will be ONE player, at around 2-3 million MAX.

I can’t see Perezogin or Plekenac getting more than 850, 000 each. May they prove me wrong.

searching for what? theres nobody left, i mean we can get some 4th liners, or some people to clean the dressing room, but really if Gainey is still looking, he should look to trade

actually i think there is still a few players left. petr sykora and sergei samsonov aren’t players who produce 10 to 30 pts. they can produce over 45 to around 80 points when they play over 70 games. and danny markov is the best defencemen out there that has yet to sign anywhere, which we might need if we don’t get a quality defenceman when we trade souray who has asked out

If Ganey was trying to sign Elias or Shanahan at $4-$6 mil then he must be confident he can create cap room via a trade.

I don’t get why he signed Ribiero before signing Ryder. If Ribiero held out no one would care but Ryder is essential.

Of the five UFA’s for next year, only Markov is a must sign. Problem is that Gainey may be unable to replace the others through free agency.
