Gamache wants to play

The first two Leafs pre-season games have shown certain qualities about certain players. Some players have risen and appear to have a shot at cracking the Leafs roster, while others I had pencilled in at roster spots seem to be drifting away. One thing is for certain, Gamache has come to Toronto, because he wants to play in the NHL. While others like Jeremy Williams have somewhat disappointed me, Gamache has been a pleasant surprise. I half expected him to be last years Westrum and stick to the Marlies, and probably be their leading scorer. Bit after two games, it’s clear this guy hasn’t come to play with the Marlies.

The last 2 exhibition games have looked like games 1 and 2 of the stanely cup fiinals for Gamache. For the Stanely cup Finals and the game last night against Phoenix are the only two times I have seen a 160lb hockey player deliver a decent open ice hit.

I’ll be the first to point out his flaws. He plays poorly defensively, he’s got below average puck handleing skills, his feet and stick move faster than his brain…. however he is skilled, and determined to play in the NHL.

I am making a promise right now that he will be a regular in the NHL one day. Because he wants it, and because he’s talented enough. He may be cut by the Leafs at camp and play in the marlies, but when the injuries come (and you know they will), he’ll be knocking on the door. And even if he doesn’t play a game with the Leafs this season, he’ll move on and play somewhere in the NHL.

My comparison has changed, instead of last years Westrum, I’m hoping he’s more of last years Devereaux.
