So much for the rumoured demise of president-general manager Doug MacLean in Columbus.

Sources tell TSN that MacLean and the Blue Jackets have agreed to terms on a new long-term contract.

How’s that Adam Foote signing working out for you Doug?

  2. jpmac says:

Look a whole lot better than the eric lindros signing

  3. wingerxxx says:

Foote costs more though. Although even up, I’d take Foote over Lindros any day. Lindros is totally expendable in Toronto. He is not a part of their future.

  4. Hollywood666 says:

Even though the Blue Jackets are a pretty bad team, I think MacLean’s moves have been logical.

Foote-solid Defensive Dman to base a team around.

    Fedorov-Someone to mentor Zherdev.

I think they’ll keep getting better.

  5. nordiques100 says:

how does a GM who has made poor signings (richardson, lachance, marchant) added a couple of far too expensive contracts (foote, fedorov) and has remained in last place every year since inception keep his job?

i mean nashville, atlanta, minny, they have all improved or at least made the playoffs. the jackets are still stuck in last.

  6. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

ok as a small market team in the “old nhl” was there any way for him to compete???? nope no chance in hell. they had to build there team around rick nash when they drafted him. Zherdev is bound to be good one day and with federov on that line aswell all i have to say is watch out. Foote’s contract though is not that expensive. he is worth every penny of it. you can be the best defensemen in the world but it doesnt help if you dont have anyone to lend you a hand does it?

all im saying is since that federov deal columbus has been climbing up the standings slowly but steadily. look for them to maybe make a later attempt to get to the playoffs but miss by about 7-10 points. probably the 10th-14th pick around that area for the draft.

Imagine it though foote gets someone to play with him or they put that person on the second line. Redden or Chara???? doubtful it will happen but hey did anyone see foote to columbus in the first place?

  7. Aetherial says:

    haha get off the glue.

  8. Aetherial says:

How were they any worse off than Nashville Carolina Minnesota?

Foote was an example of a bad signing in the days of the salary cap.

There will be less of these signings in the future.

  9. jpmac says:

haha atleast Foote is contributing to something….good job by jfj to sign a bunch of injury prone players

  10. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

foote was a smart signing. you think columbus ment to have him make a huge impact right away? no guarnteed they did not. why do you think they got federov? 2 reasons #1 he has about 2 years left on his contract and thats good for the future aswell cause he still can contribute. #2 set up man for rick nash.

please think before saying something ever again. try to think outside the box aswell.

  11. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

i would take a 4 million adam foote over eric lindros’s 1 million injury prone behind any day.

  12. Aetherial says:

If you can’t see what is wrong with your opinion, I can’t help you.

As far as injuries. They happen. They can happen at any time, to any player.

Assuming you are a CBJ fan, you of all people shoudl realize this.

Oh and of that *bunch* … only Lindros has missed any significant time and his injury was not related to anything that has happened before.

  13. Aetherial says:

    It is about money.

Foote (and he is not alone) was an overpriced D-man.

I *think* (can’t remember for sure) that they signed him for a few years also?

Honestly, if the LEAFS paid that kind of money for a player Foote’s age… we would have heard nothing except how the old slow Leafs just got older and slower and everyone would be laughing their ass off at the money.

What this boils down to is a matter of opinion really. It is my opinion that teams still have some learning to do about tieing up significant cap money for years on older veteran players.

We are already seeing some examples with Aucoin (who was not good even before this injury) and Khabibulin… The Flyers aren’t exactly lighting the league on fire either with big bucks tied up in Rathje and Hatcher…

oh and what about Pittsburgh… how’s the big dollars working out there?

I have nothing against Foote. I would LOVE to have him on the Leafs… just not at that price (and I *think* not at that term?)

  14. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

last i checked foote is only in his early 30s i mean early 30s like 32 at most so he has atleast 5 more good years left.

  15. jpmac says:

I am not a Jackets fan, and it is your opinion that seems to be wrong. Adam Foote is an Olympian, he is not going to put up big points, because he is not an offensive d-man. People in Toronto don’t know what defensive defensemen is (i.e. MCCabe). Lindros has always been hurt no matter if has to do with prior injuries. And if you are telling me you would take Lindros and his $1 milion dollar salary over Foote and his $4 mil, then maybe it is you that is on the glue.

  16. Genejoke says:

How does every post not related to the leafs end up being an argument about the leeafs? Seriously, get a *****ing life. This time it wasn’t even the leafs fans fault. You people are sad.

  17. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

blame it the person who started it then lol.

  18. jpmac says:

I agree that some of the signings have been poor, but notice that this team really started to turn it around when Nash got back, if he would have been there all season then I think they would have been really close to a playoff spot.

  19. Kraut182 says:

Adam Foote, born July 10, 1971, making him 34 going on 35. Signed for 3 years at $13.8M or $4.6M/season. Took me about 30 seconds to google this stuff, if you want to debate things take the 30 extra seconds and do the research.

As for Foote, he’s not over the hill yet, but he isn’t going to get any better and you never know when a player is going to turn downhill. Especially a player like Foote, who has played such a physical style his whole career. And if that happens, then Columbus has a very overpriced defenseman on a team not willing to spend that much money.

As for now, I’d say he’s slightly overpaid at $4.6M, but not severely. If there was a 4th year on the deal, then (IMO) it would be a lot worse.

The problem I have with Doug MacLean getting a new deal is what else has he done. Not much at all as far as I can tell.

  20. wingsfan13 says:

i really dont think you can blame macleam for Columbus’ poor start to the nhl season. the blue jackets were suppressed with injuries to their major players (nash, klesla, foote). If you haven’t noticed they have fairly steadily climbed the in the rankings. They needed a solid defenseman for protection in their own end and that’s what foote provides. I don’t know what people really want from him. Berard pickup from a while ago was good because he provides offense from the blueline especially on the powerplay. Goaltending is good. Lots of prospects. Addition of Federov working out good so far, increased his pts greatly from ANA to a pt a game almost and he is training the young guns while providing a legitimate #1 center to manage the number one line either with vyborny, zherdev, or nash. I actually really see this club going places now contrary to disillusions from the past. I give doug a thumbs up for trying and being smart with the money and roles for once.

  21. Aetherial says:

The point is not a comparison.

The point is that I think that, with the new cap, a contract like Foote’s is not wise.

    Fine, we differ, whatever.

  22. Aetherial says:

Adam Foote is 5 months younger than Mats Sundin… who many people have said is too old now…

and who IS showing signs of slowing down, and I am a big fan.

Really, I just think that we will start to see less of these contracts for older veterans as we go forward and teams realize they are hampered by existing contracts.

  23. Aetherial says:

Adam Foote has played exactly 5 more games than Lindros this year.

He is also the worst +/- on his team.

    So why blame me?

I think Foote was a poor signing, you don’t, endof story.

It was NOT me who dragged the Leafs anc comparisons into this. It is the pathetic people who can dish it out all over the Leaf fans, but God forbid a Leaf fan dishes it back.

What has columbus done, compared to the other “have-nots” in the league?

  24. Aetherial says:

    And yet,

interstingly enough, when the Leafs get hit hard with injuries… Quinn is the world’s worst coach and JFJ is the world’s worst GM.

This isn’t coming from *just* stupid-ass leaf Fans.

  25. Aetherial says:

    By the way…

I never said anything about points. I don’t expect points out of him. I expect solid D and durability.

He has played 5 more games than Lindros and does not have a great +/- (albeit on a bad team).

More importantly Foote is 4.3 for 3 years.

Lindros is 1.55 for ONE year.

    Cap concerns are an issue.

  26. Aetherial says:

My bad, misread the stats. Foote is nowhere near the worst +/- on the CBJ.

  27. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

i wasnt blaming u i said blame the person who started talking about leafs.

  28. Aetherial says:

    ahhhh ok.

Obviously I am getting a little defensive … easy to do for a Leafs fan around here 🙂
