Go get ’em, Burkie

The Leafs are expected to be near the front of the line if former Anaheim Duck first-rounder Justin Schultz becomes a free agent in a couple of weeks.

Schultz, a big defenceman with 44 points in 37 games, is leaving the University of Wisconsin a year early to play pro. But he’s thus far not signed with the Ducks, who could lose him if a deal is not reached by June 24. After that, a number of teams are in the picture, his home province Vancouver Canucks, the needy Detroit Red Wings, the Rangers, Oilers and the Leafs.

Toronto’s connection is that Burke drafted him just prior to leaving the Ducks in 2008, 43rd overall, the round after another Wisconsin defenceman Jake Gardiner. Anaheim was so anxious to get Schultz signed, it was reportedly prepared to burn a year of his entry-level contract just to play him in the final few games of the regular season. The Ducks might also work a trade for his rights before the 24th.

44 pts in 37 games in College as a dman is insane. To put it into perspective Bozak had 23 pts in 19 games the year everyone was drooling over him. Schultz is really enticing. I hope Burke can grab him.

To put things in perspective Matt Gilroy had 36 points in 42 games and he was valued a bit higher than Bozak during that college FA mating season.

This is certainly more enticing than Christian Hanson to say the least.

Ya no doubt. Also, he tire it up in junior and has always been a highly touted prospect. This could be a huge signing and open the door to move one of our guys like Schenn, Franson, or Gunner for help elsewhere.

I think Wallace was being sarcastic.

Not this time, though usually that’s a safe bet, I really do like Schultz and to be honest I wouldn’t mine tanking another season if we’re going to keep adding blue chip prospects. Then again I know enough that we’d never plan on tanking.

The Leafs are reminding me of early post lock out Oilers when they failed their rebuild with guys like Gagner and MPS then just fell apart into Hall, Hopkins and Nail. We’ll do it the same with Schenn & Kadri and now fingers cross we’re starting to get some real talent.

I think Franson will get traded regardless. He has decent value with the potential he has and really is sort of locked in here with not much room to improve. Schultz would certainly lower the risk of trading him.

And to put Schultz’s last season in, Gardiner put up 41 points in 41 games. That was impressive for a dman. Schultz’s year was insane.

I wonder if Matt Duchene is actually available. I know Eliotte Friedman sort of speculated he was (although he mentioned it was pure speculation) and the Avs have a history of pulling crazy moves. It’s been said Duchene and Joe Sacco don’t exactly get along.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Do you really think he’s worth paying through the teeth for? I’d offer Schenn and leave it at that.

      • reinjosh says:

I do actually. He struggled this year but he was injured for 20ish games. He hit 67 points last year. It’s a risk no doubt but one I’d be fine taking.

    • nordiques100 says:

i do like that idea. and i think he’s worth it.

i love his speed. It will be either him or stastny who will get moved.

Duchene is a RFA. I dont know, i guess if the negotiations go sour, there’s a possibility there.

I would move Schenn for sure, but it will probably cost a bit more. Bozak I would include. He did star at teh U of Denver. And if it was another prospect, I’d do it.

He isnt a big centre, but I think would be an impact centre, especially with PK and JL

      • reinjosh says:

Yeah he isn’t big, but he’s solid. I’d give up a fair bit for him.

        • nordiques100 says:

Well him and Phil can both flat out fly. That’s a huge advantage I think.

He is a huge upgrade over Bozak.

          • Steven_Leafs0 says:

yeah I would pay a lot for him. If Schenn was the starting point I’m ok with adding Frattin + the 35th pick or even a bit more.

Wont happen though, I cannot see Colorado moving him unless Duchene says he wants out.

      • Gambo says:

Duchene and Kessel would be deadly together. Both are two of the fastest players in the league and Duchene and Kessel are both good at scoring and good at passing. I’ve always dreamed of the top line being Lupul-Duchene-Kessel.

Like nordiques said, I doubt they will move him unless negotiations don’t work out.

I think it would take Schenn, Bozak and Frattin as the starting point, can’t see them giving up on him after one bad season though.
