Gonchar to Pens, Iggy, Naslund Stay Put, Nieds to Decide Today

According to the Fourth period:

Sergei Gonchar signed a 5 year $25 million dollar deal

Jarome Iginla signed a 3 year $21 million dollar deal

Marcus Naslund resigned for three years, $18 million.

Scott Niedermayer is going to decide today where he will sign. The pens are out with the Gonchar signing, so would the Oilers getting Pronger and perhaps the Canucks as well with the Naslund signing. The flames cant afford 2 players making 7 Million each so they should be out of the running as well.

The other teams rumoured are the Wings and the Devils.

And yet again no Leafs in sight!!!

As a B’s fan….sucks to see Gonchar leave…but wish him the best none the less….I guess this just reinforces the fact that the Bruins will now have to go after a mobile d-man in the coming days….can anyone say Leetch?!?!

  2. dudemar says:

The Bruins will always be a scary team to me….I wish the Pens didn’t have them for their home opener. Leetch, I think, would be a good fit in Boston. I think Niedermayer will end up back in NJ.

  3. mikeribeiro says:

With Gonchar in Pitts for this much, forget about Kovalev in Pittsburgh…He will be back with the Habs…probably Satan too….hope so

  4. mikeribeiro says:

That would be cool to see Leetch in Boston. Boston vs Montreal would be great games with Leetch…I love this guy !!

  5. Furlong19 says:

Pens are by far the most improved team thus far since the 03-04 season. If they can work it out with malkin and if lemieux stays healthy, they’re gonna be a really strong team. I’d love to see them sign another defenceman, around the 1.5-2 million range and maybe a tough guy up front.

  6. -Swizz- says:

with gonchar (the best pp defenseman) and lemieux (the best pp forward), tehy’re gonna have one damn good powerplay…

if they actually crack down on obstruction, expect a lot of powerplay opportunities…

  7. guinsfan4life says:

Little baffled that Gonchar got 5 million per season. That is going to drive up Neidermayer’s asking price, although it was always thought for him to be at the max.

The penguins still have money to spend-they need some high impact type wingers so hopefully they are not done yet.

  8. nordiques100 says:

looks like leetch to bruins and nieds staying in jersey

All that leaves on defence is malakhov, schneider, berard, rafalski, hamrlik, numminen. pretty slim if the leafs want to improve any.

leafs better at least get one of them. they need it.

  9. -Swizz- says:

    i think they’d spend 2-2.5M…MAX 3M on a defenseman…

i hope that would be enough to get hamrlik

i could see them ending up with numminen

  10. Bruins4771 says:

I wonder if the Gonchar signing will enter the Bruins into the Niedmeyer sweep stakes? I hope not……… lets get Berard and dump all our money on Joe!

  11. goleafsgo1991 says:

how about resigning leetch…and then having

with a couple of good prospects (hedin, harrison, white, etc.)

  12. dudemar says:

Noone likes Hamrlik? He’s out there isn’t he? I think he would be a decent addition to any team.

  13. bmac says:

who do you recommend? forsberg? vancouver has the edge i would think since they signed naslund. kariya? palfy?? let me know bro. i will let you know about raw prolly tomorrow

  14. habsoverserver says:

Leetch to Boston according to reports today.

  15. GretzNYR99 says:

I’d take him or Niedermayer on the Rangers, we need a top flight defender.

  16. crazzzy says:

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Penguins had contacted Forsberg’s agent already. If we don’t land him, I’m hoping for Kariya. Kariya and Lemieux worked great together at the last olympics.

  17. dvast8 says:

I wouldn’t rule out niedermayer signing with the flames still, if you look at their cap room after signing jarome, its still around 14mill to 12mil..

they aren’t going to take up the entire 14/12 mil left. Langkow will sign for less or same market value as amonte did, leopold will have a contract under the value of regher’s, Kipper will make about the same as he was arbitrated before the lockout, reichphrect, clark, kobasew, lombardi will prolly make about 3mil all together, warren and ference will be under the same range as each other, most likely long term and under a million. I wouldn’t put it past sutter to spend a little more than 32/34mil just to get niedermayer, and i dont see niedermayer going to any eastern team other than the devils. Most likely he’ll end up with Anahiem and if lucky.. calgary.

  18. Aetherial says:

Just imagine for a moment, the Penguins powerplay.

Now imagine it if they sign Kovalev…

    Sergei Gonchar: Age 31

    GP G A PTs +/- PIM

    03-04 Was 56 7 42 49 -20 44

    03-04 Bos 15 4 5 9 6 12

    Scott Neidermayer: Age 31

    GP G A PTs +/- PIM

    03-04 NJ 81 14 40 54 20 44

Keep in mind, Gonchar played for a Capitals team that finished 2nd to last in front of the Pens for all but 15 games and still put up more points. Granted Neidermayer played on a trapping team. If you ask me, they’re about equals. Pens just saved 2million dollars and went with the Russian version.

  20. PensFansRejoice says:

The Pens need a center and a left wing. Kariya is hurt too often for them to risk the $ in my opinion, especially since we ALL KNOW lemieux will get hurt and miss at least half of the season, which is par for the course with him since he came out of retirement.

  21. Aetherial says:

WellI guess Kovalev will be in Montreal… Still any PP with Mario and Gonchar, nevermind Crosby and whoever else is in Pitt … is scary.

  22. rc21pa says:

Let me be the first to be negative about this signing. I’m sorry but Gonchar is overpaid at 5 million a year. That money could have been used on a more talented d-man after all two more million and it could have been Niedermayer. Let’s face it Gonchar is a good sign but the Pens spent too much for a D-man that should be 3.5 to 4 a year. That’s not much of a difference in what he got but in a age of salary caps, every little bit counts and I feel this one is going to hurt.

  23. Megaroset says:

I can sleep tonight knowing I got Iggy back in the Flaming C this season. Thank-you.

  24. guinsfan4life says:

I don’t know really who all is left there are so many…I’d take Kariya, Selanne and or Bondra. Any of those two would be good. They are weakest now on the Wings. Selanne and Bondra can both play them…

But then they still need the veteran goalie. I would also like them to get a really solid defensive defenseman.

  25. guinsfan4life says:

THey lowballed Kovie and he left them at the table…

  26. rc21pa says:

I agree but of the four possions you mentioned I would like to sacrifice the goaltender if the Pens can’t afford all. I would rather have the young goalies take there lumps and have a strong defence in front of them. I would also like two veteren wingers that can score. Sometimes your best defense is a great offense and this team isn’t close yet.

  27. rc21pa says:

I agree and hopefully he doesn’t come with a big price tag.

  28. rc21pa says:

I still feel the Pens overpaided and could have saved on this deal more
