As reported from tsn.a/nhl

The Montreal Canadiens have obtained Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers FOR winger Chris Higgins and defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko from the Montreal Canadiens.

No one wants Gomez with that Salary everyone said… well THE DEAL IS DONE AND THE RANGERS DROP BIG SALARY.

here’s what the 2 players look like…
Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1st round (14th overall) in 2002.
Christopher Higgins – LW, 6’0 – 200LBS, 26 years of age. Holds a salary of 1.9 Million a season. Has scored over 20 goals in his first 3 NHL seasons, topping out at 27 two seasons ago and bottoming out due to injury last year with only 12 goals.

Drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the 1st round (27th overall) in 1998.
Scott Gomez – C, 5’11 – 200LBS, soon to be 30 in December. holds a salary of 8Million a season. Has scored under 20 goals in 8 seasons and has topped out at 33 once with the Devils.

This deal is great for the NY Rangers, They dump the Salary everyone doubted. And Meanwhile Montreal receives a 1st or 2nd line center depending on how he is used.

What does this mean for the Rangers? 16 million in spending is now open. Naslund, Zherdev almost definitely playing in the KHL in Russia next season and now Gomez.

do I smell Hossa and Sundin?

Hey sweetheart, as of today you can officially stop counting.

  2. HabseyMtl says:

and hes only 29,not like if he was under contract till he turn 40,some say he only reach the 20 goals one time,it was in 2005-06 33 goals with new jersey, but anyway hes a set up man its too hard to understand for some people,i TELL ME WHO COULD PUT THE PUCK IN THE NET ON THE SAME LINE AS GOMEZ LAST YEAR NO ONE Drury? pf…. who else? naslund? this guy is done Zherdev? he his not a put a guy who can score 30-35 goals and can make nice play with GOMEZ…kOVALEV
kOVALEV AND GOMEZ COULD BE A GOOD DUO like i said gomez is more of a set up player but in the last 3 years he shoot 242,248,244 times, not bad for a set up guy,now with kovalev if he still shoot a lot i think he could score 25 goals for us at least
    i remind u this…
best year of gomez…33 goals 51 assists with the devils on a line with gionta and elias, with the rangers? he play with who? so before bashing him think a little bit,but since its the habs some ppl dont think and start to act like a monkey who saw a banana

  3. the_word says:

This organization is a gong show. As bad as 'landing' Gomez was, he's the best center this team has had since Damphousse. Looks like the five year plan is scrapped.

Less we forget Gainey's offered virtually identical deals to the ones signed by Smyth and Briere. You know the other two worst contracts in the league.

    Gainey < or = JFJ

  4. Elite_Destruction says:

I'm not new lol, the other dude though i never seen til today

  5. HockeyThoughts says:

You make very good points to show that we didn't get ripped off. I'm not upset with what we lost, I'm upset with what we gained. Gomez is highly overrated and highly over paid and now he's our problem for the next FIVE YEARS. He's not the high scoring first line center we need. I'm guessing Gainey just ran out of options. You know there wasn't a line around the block to get at this guy. Why else wouldn't you wait to see what happens on free agent day?

  6. Habroller says:

This site has became an actual confederacy of dunces.

  7. Rico420 says:

Thing is Gomez has put up big numbers playing in a defense first system before – and he is the best center we've had since Damphousse! I still think it was a deal made so we could sign a guy so that Bob can bring in someone who can score goals.

  8. habs_fan_81 says:

LOL ya but id still take an overpaid gomez as my number 1 centre than an overpaid sucku koivu (great person but he has lost his step and is in the downyears not to mention his SIZE lol)

  9. MTL_HABS_24 says:

"This organization is a gong show."

This coming from a Maple Leafs fan?

  11. TheLeafNation91 says:

Kaberle's defence could be alot better, a pairing with a top defender could do dividends to his gameI Imagine a Kaberle/Chara duo…pretty deadly.

    Or a Bieksa/Kaberle
    A tough defender with Kaberke!
Kaberle moves the puck really well, and I think he deserves a title of an offensive specialist, because that is the biggest upside of his game
  12. TheLeafNation91 says:

I would rather have the Candiens splurge on the Sedins…For four million more they could of got a great winger and center

  13. the_word says:

You've won what? Four playoff series in the last fifteen years. We won about fifteen. Yeah, your fluke flash in pan cup in 93 is so impressive from a management point of view.

Montreal can't build, never any consistency, enjoy 9th spot in the conference for years to come.

No one wants to play for the zealots nor has faith in the organization.

Perhaps I'm just a jealous Leafs fan stuck with a schmuck like Burke. Oh how I wish we had Gainey at the wheel.

    Enjoy Gomez, champ.

  14. the_word says:

I'm not one to lecture others on typos but I think the proper way to spell 'HAHAHAHAHA' is 'Scott Gomez'.

  15. MTL_HABS_24 says:

Ever seen your team win a single Cup, even a fluke one – LIVE – champ?

Enjoy your "about fifteen" playoff series, champ.

If Montreal can't build, what does it say for a franchise that hasn't seen the finals since the Canadian Centennial, champ.

Enjoy Komisarek, champ, just make sure to leave last year's all-star off your roster when you play Boston.

  16. TimTheBone says:

Well first of all, i originaly didnt like this trade, i didn't like letting go Mcdonagh. That being said Alexander Daigle (one of the biggest busts in NHL history) was regarded as a HUGE prospect as well. So all you self proclaimed Hockey GM's and Scouts should mind your tongues until the kid Does or does not pan out.

Secondly, Gomez is basically replacing Koviu. Gomez essentially is a bigger, and equally or better skilled playmaker. Similar point totals thru the year except that Gomez is a little better defensively. So no real loss there. If anything its a gain.

Third, The gomez trade isnt looking so bad now after this little thing called free agency. Cammalleri is now a Canadien, NOT A RANGER. Gionta was a solid pick up as well. Now if these three players (im pointing the finger at Cammalleri more) have chemistry, That will be a sick line. Two 40 goal scorers bookending a Talented playmaker. Hall Gill has never really impressed me until this past season and playoffs. He's played quite well despite a few mistakes but even the best make mistakes. He's a huge body who knows how to use it. Unlike o'byrne who if he could get better might make a good pairing with Gill. Unless you'd rather offset them with some speed. Spacek also a great depth pick up. Not a number two guy but on the PP with Markov should shine.

Also with many free agents being gobbled up, and the only apparent Rangers signing (which again i believe to be a huge contract for a now overpaid player who doesnt deserve it YET) in Gaborik, I think its SANDS and all those Canadiens Bashers who should hold their tongues until the season has concluded. BOB doesnt look like the total Idiot he did June 30th. And Gainey, with about 6-9 million left to spend has stated he's looking for another d-man, doesnt seem to be done just yet.

We all know not to expect any of our UFA's back, and I for one am excited about the shake up. Gionta is solid, Cammalleri is a proven star, (not superstar), Gill is a big presence for a 5-6 d-man, Spacek is great depth, and GOMEZ i think might just surprise alot of ppl. Hopefully gainey can land that "top d-man" and fill out the back ice.

And to SANDS i dont believe your as smart as you think you are. Ive been reading all your posts (and im not attacking you or trying to start a words battle) but I think youre a very wishful thinking and speculative fan like the rest of us on here. Non of what youve stated (except for the obvious and much discussed on sports channels, dumping of a "big contract") has come to fruition. Sundin will not sign a big paycut to play with the rangers, the Sedins are staying in vancouver, Hossa is a hawk LONG TERM (wow what a big contract), Heatley i highly doubt will be a blueshirt, Antropov has jumped ship and lots of other top free agents are falling all over the place. So besides the Gaborik signing you Ranger fans are a little behind the pace right now. AND you still hold onto THREE of the "big 4".

So in closing all im saying is Ranger Fans dont be so quick to trash My team the Habs, Especially when you all did it prior to July 1st and even on top of that before the season even beggins. I'm a loyal fan of the Habs, but not a blind one. Im a Hockey extremist and like to think im realistic in what my team will do. Do i think they'll win the cup next yuear?… YEah right,,,,,,, Do i think they'll make the playoffs?… hey anything is possible and i think were in better shape now than last year.

Im excited for the season ….. GO Habs GO
