Great players from Latvia

Latvia is a country of just under 2 million people and is located on the Baltic Sea. Although Latvia does not have a very big population count, it is noted that some very awesome hockey players have come from this nation, most notably, Sandis Ozolinsh. Ozolinsh, was an awesome offensive defenseman in his day and played 875 games for the Sharks, Rangers, Ducks, Panthers and Avalanche.  You should check out sporta likmes to bet on who you think is the best Latvian player.

Ozolinsh, had two offensive career years. In only his second year in the NHL, he had 64 points, including 26 goals and 38 assists with the Sharks. Several years later as member of the Colorado Avalanche, he amassed 68 points, 23 goals and 45 assists in 80 games.

Another player, Arturs Irbe, was an above average goalie in his day. While only standing 5 foot 8, he was able to amass 218 wins and had a career goals against average of 2.83. While he was not tall, he made up for his lack of size with his pure athleticism. Irbe played 568 games for the Sharks, Stars, Canucks and Hurricanes.

Of late, there has been a great deal of Canadian influence to help Latvia build their hockey programs. From 2011 to 2014, former NHL head coach Ted Nolan coached the men’s National team and Bob Hartley has coached the team since 2017.
