We can tell you this much about the Canadiens as they head into a long summer, wondering what might have been – when the team reconvenes in September for training camp, the club will have a familiar look, according to general manager Pierre Gauthier.

“Last year, we changed almost half the team,” Gauthier said of last summer’s remake by predecessor Bob Gainey, who resigned in February. “You can’t do this every year.

“We want to keep a good part of the core and continue to build,” Gauthier added.

“I think we have tangible evidence that we’re moving in the right direction. We learned to appreciate our team more with the playoff run.” A day after the Canadiens’ elimination by Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference final, Gauthier – flanked by head coach Jacques Martin during a news conference at the organization’s Brossard training facility – shed little light on what lies ahead.

The team’s management group must decide on two primary issues: S What to do with goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price, both of whom are eligible for restricted free agency.

S Whether to re-sign centre Tomas Plekanec , the team’s leading scorer during the season whose production stopped as the playoffs wore on. Plekanec, who earned $2.75-million, can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Gauthier refused to tip his hand on the delicate netminding scenario, although admitting he’s operating from a position of strength.

“We’ll take the best decision to make sure the team grows in the future,” Gauthier said. “We’ll do the right thing for the organization and them. I won’t speculate. Honestly, all options are open.

If we could dump Plekanec and sign a riskier cheaper player like Frolov, I would be happy.  I realize they don't play the same position but it could open the door to signing a bigger center.

I hope they also look at buying out Hamrlik and/or A Kostitsyn.  It sucks to have to keep paying them but it opens up so much cap room.

The Habs have to get bigger on the 4th line, Martin was only able to play 3 lines during the playoffs which sucked a lot of energy out of some players, maybe things would of been different if he could of count on a big 4th line, no offense to D'arche, Pyatt and others but these guys won't cut it against a bigger defense like Philly.

How about try to sign Artyukin or/and Boogaard, this would get the Habs some respect on the ice and would give younger players confidence, you can always give those kind of players a night off the nights you play a smaller team.

     Couple trade ideas.

    To SanJose=Halak,3RD  To= Montreal Couture

                           or

    To Edmonton= Halak,Hamrlik, AK, SK and a 1strounder  To MTL= Souray, Svensson,Penner or Hemsky and a 3rd rounder

                           or

To NYI= Hamrlik, rights to Plekanec  To MTL= Okposo and Hunter

                           or

To Edm= Markov, Halak, AK, SK and a 1st rounder  To MTL= Svensson, Souray, Hemsky ,3rd rounder and Plante

                           or

To St-Louis=Markov, Halak and a 2nd rounder  To MTL= Oshi and Pietrangelo if St-Louis could make cap space.

    yeah, on the cart path.

you get yelled at if you drive the cart on the greens too.

  4. DandoEagle says:

uh hello this is reality calling – Hamrlik and the rights to Plekanec are not going to get you Okposo
