Hatcher Named Flyer's Captain

With the uncertainty of Keith Primeau’s health, the Flyers have named defenseman Derian Hatcher the 14th captain in franchise history. Hatcher, who was signed as a free agent by the club this summer, will wear the “C” until Primeau returns from his concussion.

In my opinion I believe this was the best way too go. Hatcher was the captain of the 1998 Stanley Cup Champ Dallas Stars, so he’ll be an ideal fit to lead this team hopefully to the promise land. With thier current losing streak the Flyers need someone to step up in the locker room and address the team current state.

this is defintely a good thing, hes a proven leader and the flyers need some leadership right now with forsberg gone momentarily

  2. Flyersx113 says:

good move. we need some leadership while primeau’s out.

  3. wingerxxx says:

You can’t do any better. Hatcher has been good for them this year. I figured that he would come around, as far as the wide open play this year, since he played in a higher scoring era himself. I’m sure he’ll be a good leader for the playoff run with Hitch at the helm once again.

  4. Jrugges says:

I dont know, just for me, I think the captain should be the best player on the team. We all know Forsberg is the key to the flyers success I believe he should have been handed the C.

  5. CechmanekForVezina says:

The problem is when Forsberg is out the team seems directionless. At least the captain can be there now and until Forsberg gets back.

  6. Flyersx113 says:

yeah i see where you’re coming from. the funny thing is gagne and kapanen were given permanent A’s, so forsberg is totally out of the picture.

  7. marcs797 says:

but by giving forsberg the C, the team relies on him even more. right now they cant do that, they need to be able to rely on other proven veteran leadership to get them through these tough games. forsberg is the best player on the team, hands down, but4 i think hatcher is the better choice for captain at this point

  8. wingerxxx says:

Forsberg has never been a full time captain before, and has always seemed better either without a letter, or as an alternate. Hatcher has captained a team to a Stanley Cup win, and is a guy that Hitch trusts. Plus, Forsberg misses a little too much time to be handed that extra responsibility.

  9. shuffleonin says:

Hatcher is a good choice! He has proven himself capable in the past. Forsberg would have been okay as well. He would have had lots of time to do post and pregame interviews.

Does this mean the Flyers have learned something about Primeau’s health? Primeau was a perfect captain for the Flyers. I feel bad for the guy. He didn’t strike me as the kind of guy to get concussions in the past.

I agree with this. I also agreed with waiting for Primeau, but with the uncertainty growing regarding him, I think it was time to do this. They didn’t seem to need a captain on the ice when Forsberg was out there, but with his injury and the recent team freefall the time was right to do this. Good move.

  11. deuceswild says:

I def agree with this. He has experience with Dallas so its not like were just giving it to anyone. Plus i highly doubt Primeau will be back to finish this season. This could only confirm my feeling and I think it tells us there will be a major move coming up because it sounds liek Clarke has pretty much given up on Kieth for this year. WEIGHT COME TO PHILLY!!!!

  12. KevinPity says:

I understand they need a captain and Hatcher has played well but I don’t know fi he is the captain of this team. Hopefully he can make due, but I am really waiting for Richards to step up and become a leader. Just watching him on the ice I am waiting for him to take control in some other aspects even if he is only 20.

  13. Neely4Life says:

Solid move for sure. Nice Pic.

  14. thatleafsguy says:

lmao Peter Forsberg has never been a captain of his team, don’t you think this might have been the perfect opportunity for him?? Forsberg will go down as one of the best players in the game to have never been captain.

  15. nova_scotia123 says:

You don’t want a Captain who is always going to be injuried. It would just add to the ups and downs to their season. Hatcher should fill in fine. He has been a captain before.

  16. Aetherial says:

Have to wonder if there is a reason for that… besides of course, the fact that he played with Joe Sakic.

  17. WYflyerfan says:

Richards is way to young to be captain. Hatcher will be a solid captain who can take control of the locker room. Richards would not be able to take control of the locker room and take them deep in the playoffs.

  18. WYflyerfan says:

I think he is to soft spoken. He is better just focusing on his game. He is the Flyers best player I don’t want him worring about anything other then scoring and setting up goals because if he gets into a funk the Flyers are screwed.

  19. mtrakker85 says:

Hatcher is a good leader, but he has been there for 4 months or whatever.

It should of went to a guy who has done everything possible for the team to win: Handzus or Kapanen.

  20. WYflyerfan says:

    no weight went to carolina!!!!

  21. Flyers70 says:

I’m ok with the move…they were kind of leaderless, even during the winning streak. I think this seals Primeau’s fate for the rest of the year and I look for a Flyers trade for a veteran forward (Hello, Mark Recchi?) shortly before or shortly after the Olympics.

I would still like to see Recchi back, but the rumors don’t support it happening.

  22. deuceswild says:

I know, that sucks. But this could be a dumb move by Carolina because hes basically a rental player because hes an UFA this summer so if they dont win it all, bad move. But for the flyers, I wonder who else is out there whos really goo that we could still get

  23. shekkie says:

It’s funny because I just mentioned this to my wife the other day after the Tampa Bay dibocle. Hatcher and Knuble both made some pretty scathing comments and I figured it to be enough to one of them the C.

Solid move on Hitch’s part, this team gets rather lost on the ice from time to time.

For those of you saying it should have been Forseberg, you obviously have no idea what good captains are made of, don’t get me wrong Forseberg is a good player but he’s not captain material. Nor do I think he would want it.

Same applies to Handzus and Kapanan, you have to WANT to be the captain.

  24. Kamakaze says:

I guess you could call him “Captain Obvious”!?! HA!!

I’ll be here all night folks…

Anyways, yeah, I don’t think they could have picked anyone else. just the sheer space he takes up is imposing. If he is hounding you to play better, you better damn well do it.

I think there are a number of leaders on this roster, which is an important thing to have, but Hatcher seems like the only real “CAPTAIN”. Even Primeau I thought was sort of off, but at any rate, it’s a good thing they have someone to look toward now, I just hope for the Flyers sake, Hatcher can perform with this sort of pressure at this point in his career. especially with the Rangers and Devils nipping at their heals.

  25. Viller02 says:

Hes only gonna make 3.5million next year, but he has said he wanted to stay in St.Louis many times.

  26. kicksave856 says:

Not sure I’m lmao, but I don’t know how many times he’s been ASKED to be captain. If he isn’t that type of guy, he isn’t that type of guy. I’ll take him as a player though, that’s for sure.
