Hawks close to acquiring defenseman?

Tim Sassone

Are the Blackhawks stepping up their efforts to acquire a defenseman for the stretch run?

There were plenty of rumors Monday pointing in that direction.

There were eyebrows raised in Pittsburgh on Monday night when defenseman Jay McKee was a healthy scratch against Buffalo. Could McKee be headed to the Hawks?

The 32-year-old McKee is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound physical, stay-at-home defenseman who interested the Hawks last summer before he signed as a free agent with the Penguins for only $800,000 after being bought out by St. Louis.

Maybe for a guy like Brouwer or Ladd or Byfuglien (has not been as good as last season) or even Versteeg. I don't think McKee would be enough but maybe the Penguins add a piece to bring a scoring winger back. Smaller trade but still a nice one for a cup run.
THis along with the return of Kunitz would be a nice add on for this team.

Its certainly possible. I dont like the idea of giving up McKee but we definitely need help on the wing.

Hopefully, the Pens will bring up Lovejoy as he played well when he was up. Skoula is horrid.

would you move a 2nd and 4th rounder for Ponikarovsky? He's not flashy, but up and down his wing hard and always manages to score over 20.

Hmmm …. interesting. I dont like the fact that he is a UFA after this season. But he is worth something for a playoff run.

Maybe an 3rd and an existing prospect? Veilleux or Caputi perhaps? He is a center and I think the Pens are pretty stacked at center right now.

Actually he is a winger and Ok i'll take your 3rd and caputi….send on over….lol.

That's exactly my thought. You can throw in Brent Sopel's name in that list as well as a D.

  7. reinjosh says:

    he was talking about caputi

  8. mojo19 says:

Ya i believe he was saying that Caputi is expendable because he's a centre.

I think the only bigger names (in terms of wingers on expiring contracts) who will be available at the deadline will be Kariya, Whitney, and maybe Raffi Torres. So Poni for a 2nd or 3rd rounder and a decent prospect would be a fair deal.

  9. hockey_lover says:

    Yeah exactly.

I find it so hard to rate prospects. Its a 50/50 shot to either be the real deal or a bust. Caputi seems to have the goods but has only played marginally well in his callups.
