Hicks: Stars Will Be Active in Free Agency, Resign Zubov

Whether Modano returns or not, the Stars will be active players in the free agent market reports the Dallas Morning News.“On Monday, the frenzied free-agent period arrives, and the Stars will try to fortify the roster for this season and beyond.” Hicks says he’s certain the Stars can win under the NHL’s new economic system and expects general manager Doug Armstrong to be active in the free-agent market. Hicks also wants to keep Mike Modano in a Stars uniform but said it’s a hockey decision and trusts his staff to make the call. Some names that have been thrown around are Derian Hatcher, Joe Nieuwendyk, Adam Foote and Ziggy Palffy. As 4 PM came and went, it appears Modano will test the free agent market.

Also the stars made qualifying offers to RFA’s Jason Arnott, Dan Ellis, John Erskine, Dan Jancevski, Niko Kapanen, Junior Lessard, Antti Miettinen, Brenden Morrow, Steve Ott and Mike Smith.

This just in, the Dallas Stars have re-signed Sergei Zubov to a three year deal, according to various reports.

well thats nice, armstrong will bring in more over priced and overrated used to be allstars that will do good in the regular season and vanish in the post season. that is if the stars makes the post season, which i have my doubts.

Well, Armstrong needs to pull a couple of good moves to bring them back to full strength, having ex all-stars might not necessarily be a bad thing considering the fact that they have past experience, but we all know what wear and tear does to a person’s body or head in that matter *cough* Allison *cough*

10 to 1 the stars bring back Hatcher. If not, then he will come to an east coast team. Philly, Boston, NYR, NJ.

does anybody else agree that that woman in the pop up is very sexy?

Bringing back Modano and Hatcher is fine and good. they would have a decent blueline led by Hatch, Zubov and Boucher, plus some decent forwards with Modano, Arnott, Geurin, Morrow, Lehtinen and a good goalie in Turco. But this is relatively the same team that hasnt gotten it done the last few playoffs. Really it is time for them to think fresh and think about down the road. THey have some decent prospects but no franchise guys like a Modano.

Plus I think Zubov is overpaid. 4 Million per? the guy is 35 and has been on the decline. Now we know kind of what the market will be for a blueliner like that. i guess a guy like Schneider or Hamrlik would be wanting that kind of money.

Doug Armstrong seems to be over his head as GM. I see little to no innovative moves, much risk or much vision. I am not sure what he is really doing besides driving up the UFA market. He will overpay Hatch and Modano to get them to return. We already knew what he has done already with the Guerin and Turgeon signings.

All I care about is re-signing Modano. When they have #9 signed, then I’ll worry about who else they sign.

The management of this team has frustrated me since 2001, and if they let Modano walk, I really don’t know…

Interest in Nieuwendyk? Yea, too bad we didn’t have him a couple of yeas ago…oh wait, thats right, we did! And we traded him for Arnott, who’s most significant contribution to the Stars has been two stupid penalties late in the third period in game 6 against Anahiem in 2003. That’s really all I can remember him doing.

Morrow? I’m probably the only Stars fan who isn’t impressed with that guy. Yes, he has heart, and yes, he tries hard, but he doesn’t really do all that much…He’s a good guy to have on the team, but I don’t see him as their star of the future at all.

Hatcher? If they can get Hatcher for cheap, then bring him back. But I mean, cheap. I mean, you have an open roster spot, so why not? I wouldn’t go out of my way to bring him back, as he’s the one who left the team in the first place…Really, this guy was their captain for years, and left for more money in Detroit, and they’re falling over themselves to bring him back? While they offer Modano one year contracts?
