As a former NHL All-Star Player – What is it like to be traded? What emotions go through your body?

I was fortunate enough to play with the Philadelphia Flyers for 11 years before getting traded at the deadline to Boston. Bob Clarke did me a favor as the Flyers did not make the playoffs and Boston went to the Finals. I was thrilled to go to a team that had the chance to win a Stanley Cup. It was a positive move for me and I was happy that I was traded to a contender.

Describe the emotions that were running through your body when you were drafted by the Flyers in the first round? Where were you ranked?

I grew up in Saskatchewan and was in a small farming community called Neudorf when the 1979 draft took place. I had not followed the draft that day and knew that whatever team I was picked for I would be able to help out. I wasn’t worried about where I was going to be picked but concentrated on being ready to move up to the pros. I was ranked in the top 10 but was picked 14th. It was the year the NHL and WHA merged and the draft went from 20 year olds to 18 years old so the pool of players was a lot larger than ever before. I was thrilled to be picked by the Flyers because I knew I was going to a team that could win right away. They also had one of the best leaders in NHL history with Bob Clarke and I fit into their style of hockey as a team player.

Were there any major rumors that you were about to be traded when you were playing in the NHL? Did the rumors ever effect you?

There were a few rumors that I was going to be traded in the mid 1980’s because the Flyers had been bounced out of the playoffs early a couple of years in a row. I never let the rumors affect me because I knew that if I got traded, I would be able to help the new team out. I always had a very confident opinion of my game as an all around consistent scorer and defensive player. I could play any role that a team needed me for.
