In the summer of 2001, Holik is awarded $3.5 million in salary arbitration.
During the 2001-02 season, Devils GM Lou Liamorello offers him a deal that will make him $7 million per season, doubling his salary.
After the playoffs conclude, Holik feels that $7 million is not enough. Liamorello ups his offer to $8 million per season, effectively matching the contract he gave goalie Martin Brodeur.
The Toronto Maple Leafs offer Holik a five year, $38 million deal, and are willing to tack on another $2 million.
The New York Rangers offer $43.75 million over five years, averaging $8.75 million per year, to Gillis and Holik.
Gillis asks Holik, “Is this what you want?”
Holik answers, “I want $9 million.”
Sounds like Holik IS INDEED to blame for this, along with Gillis.]]>
