How to build the Blackhawks

If I were to be running the Chicago BlackHawks here are some things i would try to make the team better. Keep in mind that the likelihood of any of this happening is slim to none so I am just basing the moves as hockey moves and not at all factoring what the CBA will be like and how restrictive it may be.

They have done some good signings with Cullimore, Brown and Barnaby. This solved some of the grit, leadership, toughness qualities that they were lacking. But they are still looking for 2 top forwards and at least one more blueliner. If i were the Hawks I would go after Fedorov. I would trade Arnason (good young player but had problems with Sutter so move him now) Yakubov (not a rugged player so would not fit in with a Sutter team) and Barinka (solid young d prospect). Of course the Ducks may have to pick up some of the tab on Fedorov’s contract. I mean he is still in his prime and still a dangerous, productive player (when he wants to be). he could be the front line forward that the Hawks need as he would fit into Sutter’s defensive system (one of the better 2way forwards in the league) yet provide the needed big gun up front to take pressure off their younger forwards. There is no doubt he is an impact player and a winner so the cost would be fair.

I would also sign Val Bure. he is a player whom played well under Sutter so they would have a good idea of what he would bring. He would fit nicely on Fedorov’s wing and provide the team with a solid 25-30 goal scorer.

I would also trade McCarthy (good skating dman who is still young) and Radulov (skilled winger who could play with Yash) for Hamrlik. now Hamrlik is pricey but still a top 3 blueliner at least. He would greatly help the PP yet he is not too bad in his own zone. his ability to log big icetime is good too.

With these moves the Hawks would look something like this:

Fedorov-Bell-Bure

Ruuttu-Calder-Daze

Brown-Barnaby-Prospect

Nichol-Moen-Prospect

Berard-Cullimore

Hamrlik-Prospect

Robidas-Vandermeer

Thibault-Munro

Poapst, Nickulas, Thornton

This would allow for the team to still be young and developing but at the same time dangerous and competitive. All depends on Thibault’s health. They had terrible replacements for him when he got hurt last year and they faded quickly. They need his return to top form to be successful.

This team is full of young prospects as they would have still forwards like Matt Keith, Vorobiev, Ellison close to NHL ready and defencemen like Babchuk, Seabrook and even perhaps Barker close to being NHLers as well. so having some jobs open for prospects would add a nice mix of youth to a team that would have added a few veterans.

This would also allow the holdovers like Bell, Ruutu Calder, Daze and Berard to not have to carry the whole offensive load. the added veterans will help a great deal in terms of additional talent and leadership along with needed experience. They have a good coach and i think these other additions would make them quite a decent, competitive team and certainly a playoff team.

So tell me what you think?

I’m not sure if Fedorov is such a good idea. The team is still young, and they’re not gonna win anyhting any time soon. They need veteran leaders, not whiny Russians.

  2. cgolding says:

stage one : get new ownership.

stage two : irrelevant until stage one complete.

  3. DandoEagle says:

nope nope nope you are so wrong. i cant beleve you would suggest that. I cant belive it. are you kidding? they have great ownership. they make money and at the same time put a good team on the ice. it is chicago with te problem. they dont know how to support a sports team. so how can you spend when you have no fan support. there is no point. so they are doing what is right and saving money rather than waste it cause no one will show up anyway. onwership is not the problem. it is fans like you who give up on your team so quickly.

    a) i’m a flyers fan.

    b) it’s general consensus that wirtz is potentially the worst owner in the league by most of the NHL world… how much talent has vacated chicago in the past 5-10 years?

    c)http://www.suntimes.com/special_sections/hawks/032904crisis.html

read about all the stupidity that goes no there… including the fact that they don’t show home games on TV. worst management group in hockey, and that is a neutral opinion coming from philly. will the salary cap help them? maybe. doesn’t change the fact that the guy is an A$$.

  5. EmptyNetter says:

Dude, he’s a Philly fan. Besides, if Hawk games are blacked out in Chicago how can you expect fan support?

  6. EmptyNetter says:

    What cgolding said!

Damn shame though. Shouldn’t have happened to an original 6 team.

  7. DandoEagle says:

a)no wonder you know nothing about hockey it’s because you like the dumb flyers. the flyers suck trading the whole team for eric loserface. why cheer for the flyers when you will have to suffer again to another defeat at the hands of the leagues best team the sens. i cant beleve anyone would cheer for the flyers. i cant beleive it.

b)nope nope you are wrong there. a bad owner is one who goes to jail like in buffalo or moves teh team like they did in minney. wirtz has every rightto make money and that is what he is doing. the only real loss was belfour as he carried the whole team for years. just like he carried the stars and leafs.

c)why show home games when no one watches anyway? if they had fan suuport then perhaps it would be more better to show the games on tv but since no body wants to come to hte games then forgot about showing them on tv. he has that right.

  8. Lapointefan says:

Hamrlik passed up the chance to go to arbitration this summer. He wants a longterm deal from the isles.I expect the isles to sign Hamrlik and look to trade either Aucoin or Niinimaa.

    maybe McCarthy+Radulov for Niinimaa+4th?

potentially the stupidest response i’ve ever seen on the internet, and that’s an accomplishment.

a business man has every right to make money, and i do not begrudge him that. however, a GOOD business man does not a GOOD owner make. george steinbrenner, who i hate, is a GREAT owner, but in terms of being a business man he is HORRIBLE by your standards. he cycles a huge amount of his potential earnings back into the team, rather than pocketing them.

seriously dude… read the article because you CLEARLY have no idea what the hell you are talking about. belfour is the only real loss? they went from being a cup contender with a pretty young group of players to absolutely crap over the course of the 90’s, and belfour wasn’t the only guy they traded away, or let walk… nor have they ever made significant forrays.

c)why show home games when no one watches anyway? if they had fan suuport then perhaps it would be more better to show the games on tv but since no body wants to come to hte games then forgot about showing them on tv. he has that right.

    speak english for starters.

again READ the article. they used to have some of the best fan support in the league, but paying 50+ for a ticket to watch a non-playoff team stops being fun. and that is pure GENIUS logic, don’t show your games, and thus limit the exposure your team gets, thus limiting even further your exposure and the interest in the game… neverminding the friggin REVENUE THAT TEAMS GET FROM SELLING TV RIGHTS YOU MORON!!! TEAMS DON’T PAY FOR THEIR GAMES TO GET SHOWN, THEY GET PAID FOR THEM TO BE SHOWN!!!

does he have that right? yes. is it stupid and mean-spirited to FORCE people to pay 50 bux to watch their team play hockey, and the sign that he is an AWFUL guy to have in charge of your team.

but you seem to think he’s awesome… and i’m betting your a sens fan from your stupid first comment in this post… so how about you get the blackhawk fans deal. no home games on TV… crappy team that misses the playoffs and trades/loses all of it’s talent… your captain would look good in a flyers uni next to Roenick(he isn’t too shabby… was on those teams with Belfour)… and you gotta pay 50 bux to have the privelage of watching your team play half of their games…

your officially the stupidest person on this site for actually defending Wirtz.

  10. CechmanekForVezina says:

Flyers fans generally know the most about hockey outside of Canada. You sir are retarded, and really don’t warrant a response.

  11. cgolding says:

they are one the best business run organizations in the NBA, they always make money.

do they have good ownership? worst win pct in the history of sports i believe.

  12. DandoEagle says:

no way dude. you are wrong again. nope i dont thinkg you are right at all nope. the most stupidest people are those who cheer for the flyers. the sens are the greatest team. way better than the flyers. at least the sens have a good captain and gooder supporting cast. primeau. i am not a big fan. i think he needs to pick up his game if the flyers want to do anything. he never does anything in the playoffs. i dont like him as a player. and with aging injured team and shakey goalies and defence soon the flyers will be bottom feeders too and bail out on their team just like hawk fans did for no reason. no matter how much gooder or badder the team does the fans should always support their team no matter what. so you are so wrong on this point again. just give up and cheer for the sens as they are the only team worth cheering for. yup the sens are the greatest.

and i am use to the sens getting the shaft as here in canada they show the stupid leafs all the time. everyone knows ontario’s team is the sens cause they actually win unlike the leafs. but for some reason they always show favortisem. probably cause belfour plays for the leafs but they dont have a good team to win. and actually having a good team to see makes it worth paying the moeny to go see them. the hawks had a good team and have good young players now to get back to being gooder again. but the fans baled leaving the hawks with no choice but to cut back. wirtz has given fans the chance and got a new building too but it wasnt enough. so he is not to blame the fans are.

  13. Rico420 says:

Good comments as always buddy, unfortunately if the Blackhawks felt that Steve Sullivan was going to be too much of a payroll hog I can’t see Federov fitting into their budget..Wirtz is the worst owner in the NHL..he makes guys like Pocklington and Green look like good samaritans and philanthropists.

It’s hard to believe that Chicago used to be a city like Toronto where if you wanted to get tickets you would have to get them from a scalper and pay 3 times face value..and played in the third best arena in hockey for tradition (outside of the gardens and the forum)..it seems that when they started to play in the United Centre was when it went for a crap.

As for the Dandoeagle comments..you should really stop listening to whoever it is that’s telling you what you think is intelligent. In the past three days I’ve read some of the most insane things ever written about hockey come from you.

I feel so much pity for Hawks fans like my Dad who will not likely see his team win a cup again…hell even making the playoffs may be a stretch!

  14. cgolding says:

we sold out the spectrum when our team missed the playoffs… and our games were still on TV. i guess we just have an owner who enjoys allowing his fans to watch the home games.

can you watch home sens games on TV? shut up.

if Wirtz was a good owner he’d have a product that people wanted to see. supply and demand. there used to be a huge demand for hockey in chicago, and there no longer is. is that the fans fault? or the owners?

  15. 19Yzerman says:

Move #1 in CHI-TOWN. Get a new owner. Yes CGolding is right.

You know you have trouble with your cities NHL team when your cities AHL team enjoys more success and becomes the team of choice by the home town fans.

I heard that the owner of the HAWKS told the local media not to expect to win a Stanley Cup for a long time if ever. For that he’s OUTIE!!

Chicago deserves better.Time to be rid of that NHL drought leading title.

  16. DarkPhoenix says:

If the Sens can win, and the Leafs can’t, then why did the Leafs knock the Senators out of the playoffs AGAIN this year?

I hate Senators fans that act like this. Face that your team isn’t guaranteed a Cup yet, and it lacks things a team needs to win the Cup.

And uh, the goaltending isn’t the problem.

  17. DandoEagle says:

Dued what are ou smokin? My coments are all inteligent and thought out well, and in afct my posts are more better thne yuors so shut up!

  18. Sundin-is-the-BEST says:

Sign someone like Damphousse and ad a winger like Rucinksky(might spell that wrong).

Therefore you wouldnt have whinny russians on yer team

  19. CechmanekForVezina says:

“at least the sens have a good captain and gooder supporting cast. primeau. i am not a big fan. i think he needs to pick up his game if the flyers want to do anything. he never does anything in the playoffs.”

Those are the stupidest 4 sentences and one word I have ever read in my existance. You obviously stopped watching the playoffs after the Sens lost in the first round. Go away. Seriously.
