Could the Hurricanes look to move Cam Ward?
Would the Carolina Hurricanes ever consider trading goalie Cam Ward, who has two years left on his deal ($6.3-million salary-cap hit)? They like Russia’s Anton Khudobin and farmhand Justin Peters gave them good work when rushed into the net with Ward and Khudobin out.
There’s lots of conjecture that the Anaheim Ducks, rolling along with the best record in hockey, still want to upgrade their back end and are sniffing around New York Rangers’ shot-blocking unrestricted free agent defenceman Dan Girardi. They’ve got lots of assets to deal — Luca Sbisa, who is coming off wrist surgery soon, maybe Sheldon Souray, who is also out after damaging his wrist, prospects and their own first-round draft pick in June. They won’t deal the draft pick they got from the Ottawa Senators for Bobby Ryan.
Edmonton Oilers winger Ryan Smyth, who played internationally with the just retired Wade Redden, had high praise for the defenceman’s game. “Very composed. Like a (Nicklas) Lidstrom composure on the ice. Didn’t have Nick’s skill, obviously, but Wade was very calm and never seemed to get himself out of position (at least in his Ottawa days before getting big money to play in New York, where things didn’t work out),” said Smyth.
The Boston Bruins badly miss defenceman Dennis Seidenberg (torn anterior cruciate ligament), their second-best rearguard after Zdeno Chara. They need a top-four guy, too, and might trade Adam McQuaid, a tough, stay-at-home D-man in a deal.
