Hurricanes Rumors: Trade Talks Turning Into A Circus

By virtue of the title, trade rumors usually turn into soap operas.

When it comes to the rumors surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes recently, it has been a complete farce. Every report seems to indicate the Hurricanes throwing players at whatever team happens to answer the phone and getting hung up on. There’s the Tim Gleason for John-Michael Liles rumors that have been going on for weeks now. In addition, there’s rumors with Tuomo Ruutu and Jiri Tlusty.

The funny thing about this is that nobody seems to be taking the bait on these trades. While the Hurricanes are reported to be giving the Toronto Maple Leafs the hard sell on the Gleason-Liles deal, Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle gave a statement earlier in the week giving Liles the big build-up. “Liles is the best defenseman outside of the NHL right now.” Loiselle said,  ”At this point, there is no way to fit him into our roster.”

If the Leafs are set to ship Liles out to Carolina — why the public sales pitch?

Gleason’s name was vomited up on Thursday by Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal in a list of possible trades for the Edmonton Oilers. The comical part is that on the same day, Newsday reported that both the Oilers and New York Islanders would jump on either Anton Khudobin or Justin Peters once Carolina puts one of them on waivers.

So now Edmonton wants Gleason and a goalie from Carolina? It’s hard to say since the white noise surrounding all three teams is thicker than concrete. Furthermore, if Edmonton wants Gleason-and-a-goalie to happen, finding the answer to “for whom?” would make analysts’ heads explode.
