Injured Pronger hints at calling it a career
Chris Pronger’s career in the NHL and with the Flyers was put on an indefinite hiatus when his health became an issue, on and off the ice.
The former Flyers captain hinted at a possible retirement in a two-part interview set to air Wednesday and Thursday on Sportsnet Canada’s Connected, according to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector.
Currently on Long Term Injured Reserve with the Flyers, Pronger said his hampered vision is similar to that of someone nearly twice his age.
“What’s happened was I had 30-year-old eyes. I got hit and the doctor told me I had 60-year-old eyes,” the 38-year-old told Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy in the exclusive interview.
“I don’t have very good peripheral vision. That so-called sixth sense? I used to really have a good one. Now, I couldn’t feel anybody coming around a corner.”
Pronger suffered the eye injury during an October 2011 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs off the stick of forward Mikhail Grabovski, a little over one month after being named the 18th captain in Flyers history.
Multiple hits and the resulting post-concussion symptoms would limit Pronger to just 13 games that season, prompting the team to shut him down in mid-December.
Pronger said his feel for the game hasn’t been the same since.
