Is Schenn the bait for van Riemsdyk?

Could Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn soon be joining his little brother Brayden in the black and orange of the Philadelphia Flyers? Trade speculation will tell you that it is a possibility.

But Schenn, whose name has come up in trade rumours in the past, shrugged off the idea on Thursday.

“I’m happy being here in Toronto,” Schenn said. “They’re just rumours and it doesn’t really mean much to me.”

Leafs general manager Brian Burke has said publicly he’s ready to deal, provided the trade improves the Leafs. That’s a given. Burke wouldn’t make a trade otherwise.

The player being mentioned that could interest him is Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk, who had 11 goals and 11 assists in 36 games prior to Thursday. Just 22, van Riemsdyk has plenty of upside, and has played in 32 Stanley Cup playoff games. Burke wants to get bigger at forward — van Riemsdyk is 6-feet-3 and 200 pounds — and add players who have post-season experience.

Schenn has not yet lived up to the five-year, $18-million US contract he signed in September. That could still happen. But how patient will Burke be?

If we play like in the Buffalo game, I totally agree we'll get clobbered.

But hard to predict which Leaf team will show up.

  2. JoelLeafs says:

Not bad, but not likely possible cap wise. Between JVR and Getzlaf, you're adding 10 mil + for next season. Although I'm sure Connolly will be back on the LTIR eventually.

  3. reinjosh says:

So Flyers deny that its JVR and Leafs deny its Schenn.

Who is it? Luce's been scouting the Leafs pretty hard over the past week or two and the last time these two teams were in rumors, the trade actually happened after a while, so the rumors have validity.
  4. blaze says:

Heard from a buddy that the Leafs are interested in Matt Read but hard to say if there was any truth to that.

  5. JoelLeafs says:

    Aww, no love.

  6. JoelLeafs says:

I know it doesn't add much to the dialogue, but I have a feeling leafs will make a move soon. I felt the same way about MTL last week, though the Cammi trade sis surprise me quite a bit.

I don't think it'll be a big more (read:Getzlaf), and not JVR since he's out, or something we've been talking about. Maybe something with Buffalo or Columbus.
  7. Boston_Bruins says:

I thought the realignment was really stupid and biased, but the Bruins got the good end of the stick so I'm a bit disappointed. Two Florida teams and a stagnant Montreal and Buffalo?

  8. Boston_Bruins says:

Plus only 7 teams in the division, the most important advantage.

  9. TheLeafNation91 says:

    I'm all for acquiring Pahlsson.

  10. TheLeafNation91 says:

I would only be confident against Montreal.

We've always had issues against Florida for some reason.

Buffalo seems to get W's against us.

And Tampa, usually a hit or miss when we face them.

  11. senators_choke says:

JVR is out with a concussion. I should have known something was wrong with that rumor.

Paul Holmgren is a smart son of a b*tch. He's not likely to get ripped off in a trade.

  12. toronto77 says:

Is it the legit jersey, or kinda cheap material?

  13. toronto77 says:

Why Pahlsson? He is already 35 and has never hit more than 30 points in a season. If I am going to trade with CLB I would be going after Carter to centre Lupul and Kessel

    To Tor:
    Carter

    To Clb:
    Schenn, 1st and a 3rd in 2012

  14. TheLeafNation91 says:

Great game tonight…I was happy the Rangers prevented me from listening to the Leafs goal horn.

That seriously needs to be the first change this franchise makes.

  15. TheLeafNation91 says:

Were talking about a smaller deal and notan impactful one.

Pahlsson is experienced, a good defensive center, and brings an older presence to this team that they don't have.

    What's wrong with it?

  16. senators_choke says:

Yeah the horn makes me sick. Only 15 year olds think it's cool.

Another horrible game tonight, continuing off from that shitty game Friday night.

In Montreal, Wilson would have been fired long ago. In Toronto,…..

  17. toronto77 says:

if he is defensive then that is ok. but does he even set up plays? he needs to chip in offensivley as well and his point totals tell me that he cannot do a great job of that. I would not mind taking him as a salary dump. So we take on his salary from the jackets and they give us a pick or prospect for it. but his salary is only 2.5 mil. So taking his salary isn't helping the jackets out quite a bit.

  18. TheLeafNation91 says:

I would like something more modern. I like Vancouvers, Boston's, Montreals, Winnipeg's, Buffalo's, Washington's, etc.

I actually like the old Leafs one…The 09-10. That could pump up a crowd.

  19. TheLeafNation91 says:

He would be a rental player and he can win over 50% of faceoffs.

  20. toronto77 says:

I don't understand what the hell Burke meant when he said he wouldn't bet against this team in the playoffs. It would be A LOT more respectable if it were Lundqvist in net, but how the fvck do you get shutout by Biron??? We really need a top 6 forward to come in here and say wtf are you guys doing??? I'll show you how to play hockey. Burke cannot make this trade soon enough. I cannot believe were are currently in a playoff spot, but wins for pitts and wash could end that tomorrow.

  21. toronto77 says:

Since the JVR deal is completly dead due to his concussion, maybe the leafs can pursue Ryan from Anaheim. and since ryan is much more proven then JVR maybe a fair deal to anaheim would Schenn and Kadri.

The only problem is that he is a winger so i don't think you want to break up the chemistry with Kessel and Lupul, unless you force one of Lup, Kes, or Ryan to play centre which probably won't happen. Your probably looking at

Lupul – Connolly Kessel(no change obvi)
    Kule-Grabo-Ryan

I want to say forget about Getz, the asking price for this guy is going to be way too ridiculous, but considering he is still under 30, it may be worth it. Maybe we can try:

    To Tor:
    Getzlaf

    To Ana:
Colborne, MacArthur, Schenn, 1st in 2012

I really like Colborne but Getzlaf will occupy the number 1 centre for years to come and grabo with the second, so there is no room for Colborne, and he WILL be a top 6 centremen, so no point in keeping him to play on the third line.

    Lupul – Getzlaf – Kessel
    Kule – Grabo – Kadri

  22. Boston_Bruins says:

I didn't see the game but I think the Rangers have the best defense in the league. I think Lundqvist gets a bit too much credit. They have a fantastic group of defensemen.

  23. LeafsFTW17 says:

He is the type of guy you need to have to win playoff games.  Getting him at the deadline would be really nice.

  24. LeafsFTW17 says:

Girardi is so underrated.  One of the best defensive d men in the league.

  25. MystifoLeafs says:

Actually Biron has been doing great this year he is winning games for them and is playing rather well for a back up. Honestly I have him up there with Rask atm for best Back up in the league.

  26. reinjosh says:

How does concussion equal something wrong with rumor? Not seeing the logic that leads to that.

Dave Luce visiting Leafs for a couple games straight, scouting them. Last times the rumors existed of Flyers making moves, they usually happen (Versteeg trade, rumors were present for like three weeks beforehand, Carter trade, Ruchards trade from Eklund).
Leafs known to have coveted JVR for a while, and asked for him last year in Versteeg trade.
Burke states he's looking at making a move swapping a young 22 year old at position for a 22 year old at another position. Schenn 22, JVR 22.
It all adds up. Just because it didn't happen didn't mean they weren't talking about it. And neither Burke nor Holmgren are likely to get ripped off, meaning it would likely be a fair trade (Schenn for JVR basis isn't exactly unfair).
Not exactly seeing what you are.
Oh and the kicker? As soon as the concussion is announced Dave Luce happens to not be at the very next Leaf game scouting them lending credence to fact that JVR was in fact the player that was being talked about and since the concussion it killed talks…
  27. senators_choke says:

Do I really need to spell it out for you? The logic is, JVR was concussed coincidentally when the trade rumor got serious, ie, when Holmgren started actively shopping him.

This is another Marc Savard rumor. Philly is shopping him to see what they can get for damaged goods.  It's not rocket science Reinjosh.

  28. reinjosh says:

Ah I see what your getting at. Sorry, completely thought you were going with the "JVR isn't available" option. Not that one. My mistake.

  29. senators_choke says:

    No worries bud.

  30. Boston_Bruins says:

It's gotta be the team. Erie is one of the worst teams I've ever seen. I think Kingston held back Spooner a bit too. Fortunate that both guys got dealt as its so easy to be kept in check if you're on an island.

  31. mojo19 says:

I never said they played well at all. I only pointed out that you're the only asshole who's bringing it up. If you wanna get mad at me for speaking the truth, then I guess that makes two of us.

  32. senators_choke says:

The truth is you're a phony.

  33. reinjosh says:

I don't think it makes much sense. He wouldn't really add anything in my opinion. I suppose he could play center but I don't think he has any top line upside. He wouldn't bring the size we need. I suppose he would be a nice add should we trade a MacArthur or someone but I just see it as unnecesary.

  34. TheLeafNation91 says:

    He's not a phony.

Like I said, he's in some dream land where everything is positive and the Leafs are a decent team with really good players.

There are two types of Leaf fans…You have the positive, delusional ones like mojo…And then you have Leaf fans like us that are not afraid to give their opinion and be very critical.
