Islanders make power play for Devils' Ilya Kovalchuk with huge offer

Devils left winger Ilya Kovalchuk could be on the move, but not to a place anyone originally expected.

Reports coming out of, The Los Angeles Times and Newsday say that the New York Islanders have come to the table with a compelling offer for the 27-year-old and former No.1 overall draft pick.

Islanders GM Garth Snow confirmed this report, saying that he got a hold of Kovalchuk’s representatives.

The deal is reported to be in the neighborhood of 10-years, $100 million. The Isles are now in a three-way logjam with the Devils and the Los Angeles kings, who are all vying for the stud goal-scorer.

As a life long Isles fan, I'd rather seem them spend much less money and address their needs with multiple players.

Their needs as far as I can see are:
Defense, Offense, Goaltending, a coach, and a building.

Very specifically they should look into these UFA players:
F – Alex Frolov, Maxim Afinogenov, Mike Modano, Owen Nolan, Pavol Demitra
    D- Denis Grebeshkov
    G- Vesa Toskala, Jose Theodore

They could particularly use at least one of the first 2-3 listed forwards. More than one would be even better.

A solid back up goaltender is needed also. Either of the 2 goalies listed above would work, since I don' t expect DiPietro to ever return/remain healthy. That would force Roloson to play over 60 games this yr, which will not be easy for a 41 yr old goalie!

I think you are mistaken on this one. I am a habs fan and would be delighted that he accepted 8 per against the cap. The cap will rise man. He's no Yashin. He will be a bargain down the road. He's not slowing down any time soon. You should be excited … and happy to stand corrected 😉

Kovalchuk should sign in MTL!!!!! If only we didn't waste all that cap space on Hamrlik and Spakec…
