Islanders pick up Laviolette's option

Newsday is reporting that sources inside the organization have told it that coach Peter Laviolette’s option for a 3rd year was picked up by the team. “I am truly grateful for that,” Laviolette said, acknowledging it only when told the secretive move on his contract had been revealed to Newsday. “There’s no place I’d rather be.”

With the win against Buffalo on New Year’s Eve, Laviolette moved into 3rd place all-time on the Islanders win list for a coach, moving ahead of Mike Milbury.

It was reported erroneously by Larry Brooks of the NY Post that Laviolette was in trouble and that there was dissention in the locker room. The Islanders have picked up their play of late with the return of Michael Peca and turnaround of Chris Osgood with help from an incredible penalty killing unit which has moved from 25th in the league to 11th.

The Islanders had set a goal to reach .500 by the New Year and start fresh. They accomplished that goal by winning their last 4 games. The Isles start the New Year off with a home game against Boston. “One of the biggest mistakes we can make now is to take a breath and take a step backwards,” he said. “We’re finally back to square one and where we want to be. But now we have to keep our heads above water.

Well thats good news for the Isles. I mean he did literally lift this team from 2nd last i think to the play-offs, and that’s damn good for a rookie coach last year. I totally admire this guy, although he is ugly, and…..well, just ugly i guess, lol.

He did pretty good in his first season with the Isles but last year it was a complete team effort…He really didn’t have to do much as Yashin,Peca, and Osgood all had something to prove….

This year where a *real* coach would be needed,

Laviolette has not inspired his players nor worked them as much as a Nolan or Hartley would….

Nolan would be a terrific fit for the Isles….but hey, GOOD JOBE FOR PETE!

It wasn’t just yashin, peca, and osgood, it was depth and chemistry and GREAT coaching, and it all paid off for him. Should be a legendary coach come 15 – 20 years from now.

I’ll give him credit, and Milbury shame for what he did last play-offs even though some-one had to step up i admit.

They should give their assistant coach Cronin a raise, he’s th e one that comes up with the PK strategy that is arguably the best in the league over the past month and a half. Having a healthy Peca i guess doesn’t hurt either though. Big week for isles coming up: Boston, home-and-home with Pitt and then philly. If they can win 3 of four or sweep it, Mantray better boost this team a hell of alot in his power ranking crap. Isles are playing solid desperate hockey again. WATCHOUT!

He should have boosted them along time ago, i guess.
