Isles Re-sign Mad Mike

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Islanders extended general manager Mike Milbury’s contract Monday, signing him to a multiyear deal.

Milbury, who was entering the final season of his contract, made several deals last season that helped the Islanders make the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

In his six years with the Islanders, Milbury survived numerous failed ownerships and terrible teams that tarnished the image of a proud franchise that won four straight Stanley Cups from 1980-83.

“The chance to resurrect my career has been very special,” Milbury said in a statement. “I am forever indebted to Charles and Sanjay. I know that 99.9 percent of the people who might have purchased this franchise would have given me my walking papers.”

The Islanders, who finished with the league’s worst record at 21-51-7-3 two years ago, were 42-28-8-4 last season — a 44-point increase. [AP]

Do i honesty think its a good idea to re-sign him?

Yes…that being because Mad Mike besides his Trading frenzies & ill advised statements has brought back one important thing back to the Island after so many bad years.

That being Pride

what do you guys think?

The only problem I have with the Isles re-signing their mentally incapacitated general manager is that he refuses to give the fans any sort of continuity on the roster. Every year he makes some sort of off-the-wall deal in an attempt to make his team better.

I have to believe that Islander fans who come up with an insane trade rumor are alot closer to the truth than those little Leafers out there who think Paul Kariya is coming to Toronto for a bag of pucks and dirty jock straps.

I know that players are commodities, and everyone has their price, but Milbury seems like the crazed drunk in Atlantic City making absurd bets. Sometimes he wins the jackpot, other times he craps out.

If you’re a true-blue Islander fan, where’s the fun in that? You guys never know what your team will look like from one year to the next.

Is he crazy, or just plain stupid?

Come on now, that’s a little unfair. The big reason for most of his trades was salary dumping. This year’s roster is pretty much the same as last year’s with the exception that Van Impe & Czerkawski are gone (thank God) and we added Weimer and Timander. He had no choice but to make the moves he made. Before last season, he added the star (Yashin) , the leader (Peca), a solid D-Man (Aucoin) and a No. 1 goalie (Osgood). What did he give up? A bunch of might-be’s. Connolly, Pyatt, Spezza’s rights, Biron…who knows how they will pan out, but because of those deals, the Islanders saw a 44 point improvement and sold out 20+ home games.

Now, looking at the other side of things, he has made some crazy trades in the past, but his hands were tied. How many ownership changes was he the G.M. for. Three? Spano, Glucksterm & Co. and then finally Wang & Kumar. He had no choice to trade Palffy and a host of other stars ready for a nice payday. Here on Long Island, we didn’t even know if the team would be around in two years. We were the Montreal Expos of the NHL. There were so many rumors…Portland, Hamilton, Houston, Cleveland…you name it, they were moving there. So, with regard to Milbury, I’m glad the ownership gave him a shot to show what he could really do when given some money. He has improved this team in the offseason the past 2 years.

Personally, there is only 2 trades I would take back, Brewer for Hamrlik and Luongo for Parrish and Kvasha (which isnt that bad now with Parrish scoring 30 goals and Osgood in the pipes).

I have yet to make up my mind if Mike Milbury is a good GM or not. Reading Big Booty’s comments I agree with most of what he said. Then Reading NYIchooch’s comments I agree with his contradictory comments as well. Needless to say, I am very indecisive on the subject. Two things I do know are… 1- I hate the Islanders! 2- Any one who has the balls to climb the boards at MSG and beat a fan with his own shoe can be the GM of my team any day of the week!!!
