Isn't it Ironic? Dontcha think?

From an AP story:

“Marshall Faulk, now resigned to a backup role with the Rams, has agreed to a pay cut in a restructured contract that will essentially guarantee he’ll end his career in St. Louis.

Faulk, an 11-year veteran who turns 32 Saturday, just finished the third year of a seven-year contract. He would have made $6 million in salary and workout bonuses in 2005.

Under the new four-year deal, Faulk gets a $2 million signing bonus this year, and will earn $2 million in both 2005 and 2006, said his agent, Rocky Arceneaux. Arceneaux said the salary would average $3 million per year over the four years of the deal.

“His motive was not wanting to leave,” Arceneaux said. “Obviously with a backup, it’s hard to justify making $7 million a year.”

I know it’s football, but isn’t the irony just a bit too much to take? Here’s a guy who took a pay cut without being threatened with the loss of his sport. He took a pay cut just to guarantee that he will retire a St. Louis Ram.

According to the article, he was set to average $7 million per year for the next four years (the remainder of a 7 year deal he signed in 2002). His reworked contract will pay him an average of $3 million per year for the same four years.

Can you even imagine hearing the words “…it’s hard to justify making $7 million a year” out of one of these hockey player’s agents?

It’s embarrassing.

Just my opinion.

my statement goodfella was to have sense knocked into them….

and i also asked for people not to justify the comment.

i think the players are selfish and have no courage….it takes courage to play…not sit and throw a tantrum.

    signed….a frustrated NHL fan

  2. 19Yzerman says:

HockeyHead I am beyond being frustrated!

    See where this is going???

If a teacher corrected your essay and told you where your mistakes were, would you call the teacher a moron and trailer trash? Maybe that’s part of your problem.

Don’t take it so personally. Learn from your mistakes and move on. It’s no big deal.

  4. Aetherial says:

    Yes it is embarassing.

It is embarassing that a players union with their HEAD IN THEIR ASZ, that is f”d up enough to even be willing to d1ck around Gretzky and Lemieux… forced the NHL to cancel the season or sign a deal that gives these stupid cry-babies more than they A) deserve and b) is healthy for the league.

42.5 is the best the union will see and they won’t see it again.

By the way… where are you getting 2.5 million difference from.

The NHLPA NEVER OFFERED 45. NEVER… all they did was tell Lemieux and Gretzky.

So, you are basically blaming the NHL now for not accepting an offer then NHLPA never made?

Nice logic. It is great to debate with you but think and get your facts straight before trashing the league senselessly.

  5. 19Yzerman says:

since you are such a self proclaimed CBA expert do this:

Give me the chronological sequense of CBA offers they happend since sept.

you corrected me with sharing your facts.

  6. 19Yzerman says:

I will check for your answers tomorrow since its going to take you a while if you can even do it at all.

  7. Flyer_Fan says:

    well said

the poor guy obviously does not understand the meaning of the word

he’s just crying because we called him on it.

  8. Aetherial says:

    Why? What is the point?

Because I caught you in a stupid statement I now have to prove my knowledge. If you want to know how closely I have been following… go find what I have written yourself, sheesh.

As to your statement… I still want you to explain how the NHL was stupid for cancelling the season over 2.5 million… when that offer was never there?

  9. Aetherial says:

Nice attempt to deflect the arguement.

Face it Yzerman… you blew it this time. You made your usual attack on the owners but COMPLETELY got the facts wrong.

Asking me to go back and describe the events of the CBA to date is hillarious. YOU go back and read my stuff if you are curious as to what I do or don’t know. I stated my positions and why all along…

Restating my positions, or my “knowledge” whatever that may be, has NOTHING to do with you explaining to me your statement that the owner’s cancelled the season over 2,5 million…

just like I have yet to hear a player even come close to a coherent answer on why a cap is bad for the NHL.

Deflect all you want, just like the NHLPA… I will remain focussed on backing up my viewpoints though.

  10. Aetherial says:

Well, I DID challenge your statement about the 2.5 million…

and I am waiting on an answer to my question..

When did the 2.5 million difference ever happen?

What is REALLY embarassing is that you made that statement.

  11. Aetherial says:

How is “unoriginal” and “uncreative” even relevant to the discussion.

If it works, it works, period.

No control does not work.. EVERY league has seen that

A tax system does not work… MLB is a joke with the Yankess Red Sox Mets and Braves…

So how is your question relevant?

You are losing it. Your statements make less and less sense. You are unable to defend the intent, logic, meaning or even facts about the things you say now. All you can do is deflect conversations…

    you sound like the NHLPA.

  12. 19Yzerman says:

You say, “I will remain focussed on backing up my viewpoints though.”

the reason I asked you what I did wasn’t intended to focus on any CBA intellect you personally posse.

I have tried to research this crap my self and had a hard time putting in to order the offers and amount from who and when.

    Whats the point you ask.

Well it is easy to see that for this debate if 2.5 mill is the reason. Its a cap amount that they simply cannot exceed. No one is telling them they have to spend up to the cap if the market does not support that much money. If you look at other leagues with a Caps I am sure you will find that not all teams spend up to their respective Cap amounts. The NHL over the years has maintained a large difference from to to bottom in terms of spending. In fact they should also be talking about Minimum amount that no teams can go below either.

Thank you for allowing me to offer you why I feel 2.5 mill is not Just grounds for a seaon to be cancelled. I have no words to articulate my personal disappointment in no 2005 Champ.

  13. Aetherial says:

It makes perfect sense that a minimum accompanies a lower cap.

I am afraid I do not understand your response here. I just don’t even know where this 2.5 million number comes from or how it is relevant.

You clearly stated that it is embarassing that the NHL cancelled the season over 2.5 million dollars and you even noted to someone else that he did not challenge you.

Sorry to harp on this… but I am challenging you.

You are criticizing the league on a number that has no significance and certainly was never the amount of the difference as near as my memory of the last 2 weeks will tell me…

    Honesty, your statement was incorrect.

The number was 6.5 million. The players never made the offer they told Gretzky and Lemieux they were going to. Both Gretzky and Lemieux were crystal clear that they heard it from the NHLPA… NOW, the NHLPA is saying that Gretzky and lemieux were misled by the NHL? Who do you believe?

But that is beside the point.

The number was 6.5, NOT 2.5, which is a *potential* difference of 195 million among 30 teams.

No, the owners do not have to spend up to the cap… but the problem still remains that 49 million (the player’s last offer) leaves a LOT of teams nowhere near the level of others… and probably even less able to stay near that level after we see the fallout from this whole mess.

Your 2.5 million just appears nowhere except in rumors about what people thought may happen so it certainly is NOT any number you can hang around the owner’s neck and conveniently package up all the blame on.

My apologies for my overly personal attacks.

  14. Aetherial says:

It is not whether unoriginal or uncreative is a *stupid* statement…

It is just an irrelevant statement.

If a system works, it works, who cares if a million other entities use that system.

  15. Aetherial says:

Which cap amount of 2.5 million was that?

Please describe to me when the sides were 2.5 million apart?

You are STILL assigning blame to the owners based on a specific number YOU are bringing up, that never happened in reality.

Why? you can’t defend your position here. Apologize and give it up already.

  16. Aetherial says:

I think the debating is far more interesting than the games were 🙂

I still could not care less what happens. These guys lost my respect a long time ago… probably come time last summer when it was crystal clear how they were going to cut their own throats here…

    and then they did.

  17. Aetherial says:

You have to put this in perspective.

Their 24% cut comes after 10 years of a CBA in which their salary growth FAR out-stripped revenue growth.

The refused to even negotiate with the owners the last 5 years.

This has been, and always will be a take-back negotiation. The players did not give 24% back on good faith.

They gave it back because they were hoping to buy the owners out of their stance on a cap. In fact, by now it should be clear to you and everyone else two very important point about the 24%.

    1) Only 40% (or 60%?) of players were under contract past June this year.

    2) Under the parameters of the current system there were 3 separate periods where salaries rose by moret han 24% within THREE MONTHS.

Goodenow told his players flat out that they would get it all back as long as they could keep the system they have used to rape the owners for the past 10 years.

  18. 19Yzerman says:

You said, “I still want you to explain how the NHL was stupid for cancelling the season over 2.5 million..”

Thats the only reason I posted what I did a second time after being corrected.

The reason for the mis info well???

I know excuses are like players every teams has a benchful.LOL

I was snowmobiling and we stopped into a bar when these women introduced themselves as canadians. I asked what they thought of cancellation and she told me that a deal was struck for 45 million and that a season would start on Mar 13th. On our way back to our property we stopped for a brief moment and my cell phone rang. It was a friend telling how everything was set and now it once again called off. I was going to do an article and use the order of offers back and forth between the NHL and NHLPA but , I could not find enough accurate info to do so .

Thank you for sharing your figures and not allowing me to continue to speak ill informed.

  19. 19Yzerman says:

Let me sound like the NHL for you.

This topic is cancelled until you can agree with me on my terms.

    Sound better for ya??

  20. hockeyhead says:

we will have hockey this fall…..and i don’t care if it is replacements and line crossers….i have lost a lot of respect for players and i just want to see the spoked B on the ice.

hilbert and bergeron and boyes, jurcina, toivonen and stuart will offer a solid core.

  21. 19Yzerman says:

Before there was an NHL there was hockey and there doesn’t have to be an NHL for there to be hockey today.

I would burn my Wings Jersey outside the JOE before watching replacements.

  22. Aetherial says:

You were snowmobiling and ran into a bunch of Canadians?.. will wonders never cease? LOL… I think a lot of us are snowmobiling these days… or at least stuck in traffic most of the time!

The Toronto radio stations all day that day had reports that deals were *done*. The whole week the season was cancelled was a total and complete joke.

More than anything else, the owners and NHLPA manged to make hockey look even more Mickey Mouse than it already did.

  23. Aetherial says:

    Hahahaha… well put 🙂

  24. JeffBurnz09 says:

You see that happen alot in the NFL. Players take pay cuts, or rework their contracts, etc…In football it’s a two way street. If a player isn’t good enough to justify his contract, he’s cut. If he agrees to take less money, the team will keep him. If a player is top in the league, the team will pay him well. Nobody gets screw in football. That’s how the salary cap works. You make what you’re current value is.

If that was an NHL player, they’d give some bullshit about how they played for so many years, they’ve done this, done that, and they deserve to make $7 million per year, even if they arn’t worth it anymore.

As much as I like hockey, the players have no idea what their real value is.

  25. 19Yzerman says:

    Can’t help it.

My Hockey deprevation Syndrome is Kicking my #%*&^%#@

  26. 19Yzerman says:

Maybe someday they can both get together and make hockey look like MIGHTY MOUSE instead.LOL

I hated it when my mom mixed those to up.

He I come to save the LEAGUE.

  27. hockeyhead says:

but i need 3 to 4 hockey games a week of the same team….they don’t offer that in ncaa or ahl.

it wouldn’t be bad…it would be like the ahl but with all the new kids coming up. it is not like the nfl getting arena players.
