Jason Blake Condition

There was some really sad news after the Leafs practice today, because Jason Blake announced his condition.Jason Blake of the Toronto Maple Leafs issued the following statement following the team’s practice Monday at Air Canada Centre:

“This morning I shared with my teammates news that I was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. It is highly-treatable, and I have begun taking a pill on a daily basis that has proven to be very effective in controlling this cancer. The prognosis, and certainly the expectations of my physician, myself and my family, is that I will live a long, full and normal life.

“This situation will not impact my ability to live my life as I otherwise would, and will not affect my ability to perform at my highest level for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I’m looking forward to my first season with the Leafs and helping our club compete for the Stanley Cup.”

Statement from Maple Leafs team doctor Noah Forman regarding Jason Blake’s medical condition:

Jason Blake has very recently been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). This is a form of leukemia (blood cancer) which is a slow growing cancer of the white blood cells. It has an incidence of 500 new cases diagnosed each year in Canada.

“It is caused by an abnormal chromosome of cells in the body’s bone marrow.

Jason is in no immediate danger, as he is in the chronic phase of the disease and has been assessed by a leading authority on CML at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.

He has already started treatment which consists of an oral medication taken daily with low side effects.

“We have secured opinions from numerous CML specialists confirming that with this oral medication, most patients are well controlled and lead normal lives, doing all their normal activities. Jason will be able to continue to play fully with the team and will be monitored closely by both the team’s physician and his CML specialist.”

I was shocked when I heard about this. Best of Luck to Jason and his family. He got the results on Friday and didn't tell his teamates until Monday. This tells me one thing about Jason is that he didn't want this being a distraction going into the Montreal game. What an ultimate team player. Score 30-40 goals or not, I have the most respect for this man.

This just reminds us that sports is really a fantasy world, and that there are other things far more important.  From what I've read on some medical websites, he has an excellent shot at beating this.  Best of luck to Jason and his family.

This makes me sick.. There are so many good people in the world who are getting their lives ruined by Cancer. Jason Blake is one of the lucky ones, who is suffering from a highly treatable form of the disease. There may be a "chance' that it could get worse, but I hope JB can fight it off, and Im sure he will.

It goes to show us how real this disease really is. It's sickening how fast it is travelling amongst us, even though most of us are unaware. Living in a small town where everyone knows everybody else, I've seen family, friends and neighbours be affected and even die from the sickness. Its really sad what the world is coming to.

Anyways get better dude! Hope to see you back scoring some goals, but I still hope the Leafs lose lol

I really think one of the toughest things for him to do was announce it. you have to be almost able to take it yourself to tell the world about it. He's very lucky as its a disease that has become easily treatable over the past decade. He'll probably have bone marrow transplants from time to time, something the leaf brass will have no issues with.

Ironic how this year the NHL has taken on the Fight Against Cancer campaign, and a week into the season JB announces he has leukemia. This is very real among all of us and, athlete or not, people need to be grateful for their health above all else. Go get em Jason. Hope you realize a full recovery and have an illustrious career on the Leafs!

Jason Blake won't quit he doesn't know how to. He'll fight this as far as he needs to take it. Proud to have him on my team. Damn PROUD!

  8. simplyhabby says:

A great quote from Paul Maurice about Blake

"He'll piss enough people off early enough in the games that they'll get over that pretty quick"

To be honest, I think he will use this to his advantage.  He will work harder, the crowd will cheer him even louder and people inflicted with serious illnesses truly do understand not to take anything for granted.

I am not detracting from the severity of his illness, just complimenting on his persona and what he ill likley do while coping with it.
