I'll gladly take Laraque over any enfocer in the NHL today. Especially over McGratton. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of McGratton's but I'd much rather have a guy on my team that can suit up for 80 games and not just fight but also play the game unlike McGratton who's only thrown into 30-40 games a season just in case a certain team gets chippy.

  2. habsrock99 says:

Have you not seen Zherdev play? He's of the same calibre as Alex Kovalev. Only differences between them are Zherdev still has his attitude and Zherdev isn't quite as good handling the puck. That's it. Zherdev can be a 40 goal 110 point player in the NHL but it won't happen until he is able to motivate himself and put his attitude behind him.

  3. Brigand says:

    CCCMMMOOONNNN.

With Naslund in NY Sundin can't be far behind can he.  I'm on the verge of ordering my shirt already.  The Rangers are really starting to look good – as long as Redden can play up to par.

  4. habsoverserver says:

Laraque will be older than Gainey at the end of his three year contract.

So now Montreal has a huge mix and match assortment of third/fourth line players in begin, dandenault, lapierre, kostopolous, latendresse, chipchura and laraque.  gainey just likes to collect and trade them with his friends.

but this is a decent signing for one year, just a little expensive.  he is going to get bought out end of year two.

  5. RealisticNick says:

Um…not even close.  You would not get Milan for that alone.  Better luck next time.

  6. RealisticNick says:

Because they have longer before they have to sign them.  CHL players basically have to be signed when they are 20 where US players have 4 years because of school.  2 years extra, smater, gives more development time.

  7. RealisticNick says:

And I thank you for that!

  8. RealisticNick says:

Why take Tavares, have you heard of Hedman?

  9. RealisticNick says:

The more defense the better, you can never have too much.  Look at the UFA and trade market, D-Men are at a premium.  So if the habs draft and develop them, its worth more in a trade than a forward.

  10. Bure96 says:

110 points? Probably not, but I would say he could be a future 85, 90 point player. But he isn't there yet, and there's a good chance he'll never reach elite status. I could see it happening 2 years from now, but right now the Rangers need more offense.

  11. paulieplatypus says:

Anyone have any insight on how much $$$ Dmitri Kalinin signed for?

  12. mojo19 says:

Do you think The Isles would be interested? They did sign Weight but I though that was just to fill a roster spot with some leadership. Snow said he wouldn't be a big player in free agency and mostly wants to start building with younger guys.

  13. habsrock99 says:

You give Zherdev the perfect centerman for the style he plays, 110 Points can be achieved.  Zherdev had 61 Points last year playing on the 2nd Line in Columbus. IN COLUMBUS(they played Vyborny with Nash for 85% of the season)! This guy has it all and is starting to put it together. He'll score 80+ Points this year. Rangers needed offence and they got it without giving up really anything.

  14. habsrock99 says:

I keep hearing it's a 1 year 5 mill deal but I doubt that's right. And if it is, WOW.

  15. Canadiangold316 says:

are you fricken serious ? Laraque is the top heavyweight in the NHL and has been for quite a few years now, the guy brings nothing but intimidation when he’s in the lineup and actually makes the other team make them think twice running they’re players around a la Crosby and company.

To say he didn’t help Sid and the pen’s is a complete joke and perhaps you should run that by the hockey fights.com community there and see what comes away with that misunderstanding. If asked to Retaliate agianst another goon ? are you watching the same league man ?

Be sure to watch the habs games next season cause alot of the so called “goons” don’t even bother challenging him, how does one fight when the other teams tough guys dont even want nothing to do with ya ???

  16. Komic-J says:

    No-Way !
If this is true, then it's upthere with Finger as the worst deal this offseason. But it would also mean no Sundin in New York, which would be good for us ! :)

  17. Bure96 says:

I think the Leafs will finish 30th, then the Nuck's at 29. Probably the Islanders next at 28, and the Jackets, Ave's, and Thrashers will finish 4, 5, 6 in any order.

Honestly I would rather have the 2nd overall pick in the draft, because Victor Hedman should go #1, but tbe Nuck's will have to go for Tavares if they can get him, but like I said Hedman is a better player.

  18. simplyhabby says:

Good point.  Has this always been the case?  Just wondering as the developmental system stateside has really stepped it up and is producing some fantastic talent over the last few years. (Just producting more then they used to)

  19. simplyhabby says:

It makes you wonder if the Laraque signing is to lure that impact player.  For may years now, (even laraque admitted), they have lacked a heavywieight to stick up for team mates (Souray and Komi would do it as a last resort as they their play is way too important)

Great role player though but to reaffirm your point, we do not need anymore third/fourth liners.

As for the expense, all things considering the UFA's this year, not that expensive (realistically, totally agree but look at the signings this year)

  20. nordiques100 says:

Other than bringing back Sundin, the Leafs are done.

The only real business is cleaning up a contract for Stajan and possibly signing Jonas Frogren.

There is also of course the hope the leafs can move mccabe…..or kubina but it really doesnt matter and it seems highly unlikely.

centre: grabovski, steen, stajan, moore, mitchell, newbury, stapleton

LW: antropov, blake, bell, devereaux, boyce, earl, foster

D: kaberle, kubina, mccabe, finger, coliacovo, white, stralman, kronvall, schenn, harrington, vorobiev

    G: toskala, joseph, pogge

I think the leafs could use a tough guy. the leafs arent going to be good so at least they should make it tough on opponents.

Since draft picks are apparently useless to the leafs, they mind as well trade one to pick up someone like ben eager from the hawks. they have a tough guy in adam berti thus making eager expendable. he remember is the guy who injured sundin a couple years ago while with the flyers. the guy isnt just a fighter. he can be pretty useful throwing his 6'2 220 pound frame around.

probably kubina is the easier defenceman to move considering his contract is a bit easier to swallow than mccabes, he has been the better player and he right now doesnt have a NTC.

as for suitors, thats hard to pinpoint. some teams really need blueline help. some teams have solved their issues already and there are others available.

the sharks grabbed blake, so their need for defence help lessened.

while the jackets have cap space, they picked up commodore, tyutin and backman so they've solved some of their depth issues.

the yotes signed sauer and hale so they've improved their depth, but they are not as good as ballard and boynton so they still may want an upgrade.

the devils need defence help. they have a ton of forwards and while rolston can QB the PP, they still could use someone to help martin and white.

with the loss of blake and vishnovsky, the kings could use a big boost on D. they wont need one in a couple of years when johnson, teubert, doherty and hickey are with the team, but a veteran leader would help their backend.

the thrashers did sign hainsey, but that team needs lots of help in many areas.

the problem is that there are still other blueliners available. schneider, boyle, bouwmeester maybe, whitney maybe. plus some free agents still out there: mara, smith, carney, malik, berard, etc.

its far from a guarantee that the leafs have the only available defencemen.

probably kubina is the easier defenceman to move considering his contract is a bit easier to swallow than mccabes, he has been the better player and he right now doesnt have a NTC.

as for suitors, thats hard to pinpoint. some teams really need blueline help. some teams have solved their issues already and there are others available.

the sharks grabbed blake, so their need for defence help lessened.

while the jackets have cap space, they picked up commodore, tyutin and backman so they've solved some of their depth issues.

the yotes signed sauer and hale so they've improved their depth, but they are not as good as ballard and boynton so they still may want an upgrade.

the devils need defence help. they have a ton of forwards and while rolston can QB the PP, they still could use someone to help martin and white.

with the loss of blake and vishnovsky, the kings could use a big boost on D. they wont need one in a couple of years when johnson, teubert, doherty and hickey are with the team, but a veteran leader would help their backend.

the thrashers did sign hainsey, but that team needs lots of help in many areas.

the problem is that there are still other blueliners available. schneider, boyle, bouwmeester maybe, whitney maybe. plus some free agents still out there: mara, smith, carney, malik, berard, etc.

its far from a guarantee that the leafs have the only available defencemen.

but if the leafs stand pat, its not the end of the world. their goal should remain a top 10 pick.

I'm not really sure, but it seems to also be why some Canadian players O'Byrne, Towes have gone the US route.  More practice, less games.  The only thing with that is when they move to the AHL or NHL they don't have as much endurance for the longer season.

I have a co-worker who's son is playing stateside next year purely based on education.  He was offered open invites to a variety of CHL camps but the schedule and the possiblity of being traded would of made it hard for him to pursue his post secondary education.
