I wish we could get him, but Fils already filed arbitration i think, so doesn't that mean we're not allowed to sign him to an offer sheet?

No offers were made to Filppula from Vancouver or anybody else is what his agent said and today Filppula filed for arbitration which means no team can make any offers aside from the Wings. Filppula is not going anywhere.

As for the log jam of defensemen the Wings have, well like Holland said they will battle it out in camp and i think whoever loses will be traded or waived to bring that number down to at least 8 defensemen on the roster...the most likely to be gone or waived IMO is Quincey or Lilja but Lilja would surely be traded not waived. Something will have to give at some point because Ericsson will be with the Wings for sure after next season, Kindl the season after that and Pyett the season after that...so with at least those 3 defensemen on the way in the next 3 years at some point some players will have to go to make room or they will have to be traded.
I have not heard about the offer sheet neither but.... i am sure some team will give him 3 mil per year to steal him.....Derek Meech and Kyle Quincey will not start in the minors as they have to clear waivers and wil be picked up if that was to happen... If Chelios does sign the Wings will have 9 Dmen who must clear waivers which is why Meech will see some time on forward if there are any injuries.....If the Wings can manage to keep Filppula then i dont mind the Hossa signing, if they lose Filppula then i will be pissed, not cuz i think he's better then hossa but because they lose Hossa next year too....

I don't know where CKNW got that rumor about Filppula getting and offer sheet but nobody in Detroit or anywhere else has even hinted at that happening...sounds like a load of BS to me.

Besides the Wings still have some cap space to match and would likely match anything up to what Penner got which would mean the Wings would be getting some very nice draft picks considering the Canucks aren't any better than last year and it could turn into a top pick if Luongo got injured and missed a good chunk of the season.

Wings could also trade Samuelsson and Lilja freeing up 2.4 million for this season making easy to keep Filppula, sign the very few players they need to complete the roster and still have cap space for deadline deals since with they have a little over 4 million cap space now to sign Fillpula, Chelios (likely close to the minimum) and their RFA's who will all most likely end up in Grand Rapids and not count against the cap.

Wings have 11 forwards signed already (12 if you count Helm), 7 defensemen (not counting Chelios or Quincey who will both be signed for peanuts) and 2 goalies with a little over 4 million left as i said...so they are still in a great cap positions to keep Filppula unless a team wants to lose a lot of draft picks and overpay badly for him.

The Hossa signing did not put Detroit in a bad cap position as they had the money to spend for this season anyways.
Writing a check for $35 million isn't a big deal. Having the cash to cover it is. We'll see how many payrolls actually get fulfilled.
This is starting to get pathetic. So much for Al Strachan, Pierre LeBrun, Ron MacLean and Scott Morrison's guarantees that this new league would have virtually no money to throw at Top Tier NHL talent. Jackasses. lol

It's 2 years, $35 million total. WOW!

That's even more than the $15 million a year 10 year contract they offered Malkin!
