Kaberle to Philadelphia?

15 teams interested in all-star D, plus other Leaf players shopped around

The latest hot rumor arising from the GM meetings has the Philadelphia Flyers interested in acquiring Toronto Maple Leafs all-star defenseman Tomas Kaberle.Bruce Garrioch of Sun Media is reporting that trade talks between the Leafs and Flyers have intensified in the last 24 hours, and that Kaberle could be on the move.

The belief is Kaberle may have been asked to waive his no movement clause and if he agrees a deal could be completed.

Leafs GM Fletcher and Flyers GM Paul Holmgren were seen meeting briefly earlier today.

My personal view: I strongly suspect this is a false rumor. I don’t believe the Leafs will trade Kaberle to an Eastern Conference opponent. But that’s me.

Meanwhile, Scott Morrison of CBC Sports is reporting that as many as 15 teams are eying Kaberle. For this and other rumors, check out the link.

In addition, Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun reports that the following Leaf players could be shopped around in the coming days: Sundin, Kaberle, McCabe, Kubina, Gill, Steen, Toskala, Stajan, Antropov, Ponikarovsky and Kilger.

Toskala is a bit surprising, but just imagine for a moment what the Leafs could get for him.

Lastly, Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star reports that Ponikarovsky and Antropov could be moved if management is unable to trade players with movement clauses or big contracts.

  1. leafy says:

    I know I posted this, but I don't believe this bull***t rumor.

  2. UsedandAbused says:

I would love to see the Flyers pick another Defenseman up, but I have a hard time seeing them get Kaberle. I just hope we don't overpay for a defenseman.

  3. Habfanforever says:

If I'm Fletcher I ask for Carter, Potulny and a pick

  4. UsedandAbused says:

The Flyers AREN'T giving up Carter. That would be stupid.

  5. leafy says:

I suppose then you'd want an all-star D like Kaberle for a package of shit players?

  6. Archion113 says:

I'd give up Carter for Kaberle in a heartbeat….

  7. Kramer says:

There's definitely some kind of conspiracy behind this rumor, but I'm trying to figure it out.  Gotta wrap my brain around it some more.

  8. Gretzkin says:

''Tomas Kaberle is not going anywhere,'' agent Rick Curran told TSN. ''He signed a contract to be a Toronto Maple Leaf and while he's disappointed with the way things have turned out this season in Toronto, he has no intention of leaving. He's fully committed to the Maple Leafs. That's why he signed a long-term contract (three more seasons after this one at $4.25 million per season) and that's why he's not waiving his no-trade clause.

I believe that, considering he's got 3 more years.
Hard to know what Mats will do. He keeps on saying he wont waive and that he wants to retire a Leaf, but he should consider doing what's best for the team, if he thinks that they can turn it around within the next 3 years, I'd say that's his chance limit at winning a Cup in Toronto.
Otherwise, there's no point for him personally, and he doesn't really owe them anything more than his dedication to the team, on the ice.
  9. UsedandAbused says:

I am not knocking Kaberle and I am not expecting to get Kaberle for nothing. I am saying that I would not trade any of our young core group of players. I would rather go after a free agent during the off season. If the Flyers make the playoffs this year they aren't going to the cup anyway, so I think it would be a HUGE mistake to give up a guy like Carter. Besides the Flyers need Carter and his size. I would go after a less talented defenseman that won't cost to much.

  10. UsedandAbused says:

Lets see if you say that 2-3 years from now. Sure this year Kaberle is the better player, but Carter is younger and has the talent to be a really good center. Long term. I'd take Carter.

  11. leafy says:

    Then that's different.

  12. mojo19 says:

    Here's my predictions:

Sundin – traded to the Dallas Stars or Detroit Red Wings for a big package
    Kaberle – stays
McCabe – Surprisingly will be traded, not sure where
Antropov – traded which makes me sad, but I think they'll deal my boy
    Poni – stays
Welly/Steen/Stajan – one of them dealt, 2 retained
    Tucker – stays
    Blake – stays
    Toskala – stays
    Kilger – traded
    Gill – traded

  13. rumrunn says:

I dont think toskala will be traded but if he does, why not to tampa for brad richards, and a pick?

sundin to philly for carter, umberger, 1st round pick

kubina, stajan to san jose for marleau

Gill to ?..for a draft pick

    kilger for a drafy pick

    and put Raycroft on Waivers!!

  14. Garny says:

    Sundin- traded to vancouver/ philadelphia
    Gill- traded to Phoenix
    Kaberle- traded to carolina
    Blake, Tucker, McCabe- stay
    Wellwood- traded to Phoenix
    Steen, stajan- stay
    Raycroft- traded to TB

….sundin based on the truthful rumours, gil land wellwood to a team needing physicality on blueline and scoring centreman (although bad year), kaberle to carolina because they need puck moving defenseman and corvo isn't enough, raycroft to a team to dump salary and to a team desperate enough to take him…ie TB

  15. UsedandAbused says:

You are on crack if you think the Flyers are going to give up Umberger and Carter for Sundin, a guy who only has a few more years left and his best years are behind him. I wouldn't give either for Sundin. Umberger and Carter have MANY GOOD years left.

  16. Jrugges says:

Any defensemen avaliable has to now be mentioned with Detroit in my mind. Kronwalls Hurt, Rafalaski's hurt, and Lidstrom just got hurt this game (fed. 18th), and it didn't look good at all. They are saying a Knee injury. Many people thought detroit would be after a defensemen already, this should add flames, well… actually it should add flames, hot coles, gasoline, lots of dry wood all to the fire that the redwings will add a defensemen. Now if it's Kaberle or not I don't know but I'm just saying lets see what happens.

  17. RoenickTheGreat says:

leafy its a great rumor, with Toronto being as dumb as they are, why not trade their best, workhorse defenceman and build the defence around Kubina and McCabe, hahahaha god I'm glad I ain't a Leafs fan, what a god damn joke already this team is.

  18. RoenickTheGreat says:

More like Carter and Potulny would be pissed having to go to a shit team like the Leafs more like it leafy. Anyone even willing to play for the Maple Laughs is plain out dumb if you ask me, wearing that jersey would make me wanna vomit.

  19. RoenickTheGreat says:

The only conspiracy I see is a little ***** called Kramer talking bullshit every god damn day, get a life already you piece of shit. Sorry about the language HTR but seriously already, do you guys read the shit Kramer posts, he makes this site not even fun to come on anymore due to his stupid conspiracy theories every *****ing day, I'm sick of it already, this guy is a god damn prick and I'm sick of even seeing his stupid name on here already, Kramer, please just go blow your brains out or something if you think everything is a god damn cover-up, your such a *****head.

  20. leafy says:

That's because you're not a true hockey fan.  Just an immature idiot trying to attract attention.

  21. hatterson says:

Of course there's interest in Kaberle.  Would be a top pairing dman on every team (except perhaps Anaheim) and is only making 4.25 for the next three season.

There should be 29 teams interested in trading for him if they can afford it.

  22. hatterson says:

Possibly the worst set of trades I've ever seen.

  23. RoenickTheGreat says:

Not a true hockey fan. Leafy I go to Minnesota every year just to see Buffalo, Montreal, or Chicago play when they are in St.Paul. And no I'm not trying to attract attention, I call it like it is, and the Leafs are thought to be one of the worst teams ever. Go on tsn.ca, about 130 comments of you "leaf fans" ranting and raving how bad your team sucks, so it ain't just me trying to attract attention leafy, i'm saying it HOW IT IS!

  24. leafy says:

And I'm saying it as it is too.  You're a goddamn idiot.

  25. RoenickTheGreat says:

I understand you feeling that way. Your team sucks ass, so you gotta make everyone else feel low and feel like a degenerate like yourself. With people like you rooting for the Leafs and them sucking so bad, it just makes me do nothing but smile and feel good. Thanks leafy:)

  26. UWSensFan says:

might as well throw in Belak for Crosby…there's no way most of these trades happen; Gill/Kilger for pick(s), sure; 4th+ round is still a pick…Rayflop on waivers, nobody takes him, but sure, it could happen, but the first two (the actual BIG ones): NEVER

  27. broc says:

Kaberle's agent claims Kaberle will not accept to waive his no trade clause- so he's going nowhere, sorry Leaf fans..

  28. ovechkin8 says:

    to toronto:
    jeff carter
    1st round 2008
    RJ Umberger
    to philly:
    thomas kaberle
    Chad Kilger

  29. Archion113 says:

Carter will never be a #1 center and plays a style of game i don't like.  He isn't a playmaker and can't create anything on his own.  His defensive game is just now starting to take form and goes LONG streches of game being invisible…

He'll never be a super star, but he might be a career 3rd line center and i'm much rather have a #2 D-Man for the next few years.

  30. Archion113 says:

No way philly gives up both carter and umberger.  Umberger has played great this year and has been a huge assest to the team.  ALthough he's not scoring atm….

I'd rather get rid of Carter than Umberger.  Umberger can pass the puck!

  31. mojo19 says:

Toronto would want more back for Kaberle, they could get a top prospect too. A top tier prospect, good young roster player and 1st round pick, maybe something else too.

  32. drofnats says:

I hope they keep him, but I think he has only a limited no trade clause.  Leafs can deal him in the offseason if they miss the playoffs.

  33. drofnats says:

Kabrele said he won't waive his NTC, and I doubt Detroit would be looking to add expensive long term contracts like McCabe or Kubina… maybe Hal Gill though.

  34. leafy says:

That pretty much describes Alex Steen as well.  Comparing Richards to Carter (both from the '03 draft), Richards is well ahead in development, no doubt about it.

  35. Archion113 says:

Just so all leaf fans know…

If the leafs fail to miss the playoffs once again, there is a time frame during the summer in which Kaberle's NTC becomes void for a short time… so he can override trades now… but later on he won't be able to for a short time…

  36. Archion113 says:

Ok now Howard is saying this isn't true yet… guy is a moron i swear…

The wide-spread notion that Maple Leafs' defenceman Tomas Kaberle loses his no-trade protection this summer is inaccurate. There is a clause in Kaberle's contract that provides the Leafs a window of opportunity to trade him after a season in which the team does not make the playoffs, but it doesn't take effect until there is one year remaining in Kaberle's deal. Or, after the 2009-10 season. As such, Kaberle is in the clear for the next three NHL trade deadlines — including the 2008 version — and he can remain with the Leafs at his behest.

Wide spread notion THAT HE STARTED

  37. KingCanada says:

hahaha mojo, that prediction sounds familiar 😉

  38. UsedandAbused says:

I disagree. I think Carter has that ability. He is still VERY young and most players don't develop as fast as a guy like Richards. I think in 2-3 years you will see a MUCH improved Carter! I wouldn't trade him. He has TONS of talent and great skating ability and once he learns to use his size more he will be that much better. He is what 22? It would be a mistake.

  39. Kramer says:

Can you prove there's no conspiracy?  Well then be quiet. For all I know you're one of them.  You can't stand me 'cause I'm revealing all the conspiracy secret. It's just eating you inside.

  40. Kramer says:

Can you prove there's no conspiracy?  Well then be quiet. For all I know you're one of them.  You can't stand me 'cause I'm revealing all the conspiracy secret. It's just eating you inside.

  41. NHLSlayer says:

Roenick, you're of no use whatsoever to this conversation, just looking to start shit from the safety of your computer.  You have proven that you know very little about hockey, but just want to rant any time the Leafs come up in a rumor.  Guess what?  Get over it.  You're so dumb you couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions printed on the heel.

Now that that's done with, best line in ANY of the articles above?

"New York Post reported he (Tomas Kaberle) would waive his no-trade to go to the Rangers, a story he chuckled at…"

Just about sums up the Rangers chances…
