Khabibulin back to Phoenix? / Turgeon & Savage Bought out

According to french website, sources are pretending that Nikolai Khabibulin, who’s an UFA as you might know, is just about to accept a contract offer from the Phoenix Coyotes.

Apparently, the guy still owns a house in Phoenix which kind of gives the rumor some credibility. Might be true or not but anyways this sure ain’t gonna be the only rumor concerning an impact player that we’re gonna hear of in the next few weeks!

What a surprise… Turgeon and Savage get bought out!!!

Read on The Fourth Period: the Dallas Stars bought out Pierre Turgeon, while the Phoenix Coyotes did the same with Brian Savage.

Turgeon was to earn $4.56 Million this year and pretty much every hockey fan out there was expecting him to get bought out so this doesn’t exactly come as a big surprise.

Brian Savage’s name had not been mentioned among potential buy outs yet but it makes a lot of sense if you think about it… the guy would’ve cost the ‘Yotes $2.85 Million this year, or about half a million per point according to highly accurate and scientific predictions. More seriously, would the main reason be that the Coyotes are trying to make some room in the payroll to sign a big name UFA (Khabibulin not to name him)?

Well, if the Yotes sign Nikolai Khabibulin, they won’t bring back Boucher. They may cut him loose or trade him. Thats all assuming he accepts. Khabibulin woulnd’t mind going to an offensive minded team like the Yotes are going to be. He just won a cup with an offensive minded team.

  2. GretzNYR99 says:

Yeah, he’ll leave Tampa after and it’s nice weather after winning a cup for a longshot team in the oven that is Phoenix.

  3. zdeno_duchesne says:

are you saying savage couldn’t score more than 6 or 7 points? i don’t get that scientific prediction

  4. Lint07 says:

It’s great to be talkin hockey again!

Wait til the signings start, it’ll be crazy.

Personally I can’t wait for all the Hockey Pools to start!

…Talkin about pools, I’ll post the HTR FREE AGENTS POOL now.

  5. PensFansRejoice says:

DEFINITELY great to be talking hockey. Was just plain giddy when I heard they were working on the CBA back in June. October cant come fast enough… ^.^

  6. RangerSteve says:

If my memory serves me right, isn’t this the same Phoenix Coyotes team that went out and signed Petr Nedved, Brett Hull, and a whole slew of Free Agents before the lock-out?

Also, why would Khabibulan go back there? There is a reason that he held out for so long before gettin dealt to TB originally!!!!

I have absolutely no idea how credible or not this rumoris… all I’m saying is that I’ve seen it on, which I would consider as credible a source as tsn or oder major sports networks.

As for Brian Savage scoring only 6-7 points, those of you who share my love for sarcasm have already understood that this was a bit of an exaggeration. However, I don’t really see him scoring more than something like 15 goals and 30 points while not exactly being an A-1 defensive forward or energy player so I think $2.85 Million is a hell of a lot of money for such a player.

  8. masarume says:

I used to remember Savage as at least a respectable 2nd Line winger…. what happened to him?

Guess montreal did him more good than he’s willing to give credit for.

    Turgeon has also been terrible.

I doubt the Bulin wall would leave Tampa.

  9. killerchris says:

As pointed out by Eklund, and now reported on, Modano does some interest in joining Brett Hull in Phoenix.

It’s hard to see Mike Modano walk away from the Stars organization, but in the new NHL anything is possible and the Stars might rather try to rebuild or re-arm, than have an overvalued contract stunt their development.

Phoenix will be looking good if they also get Amonte, as has been rumoured.

  10. Tweek says:

If I the Bulin Wall does indeed go back to the Coyotes then they could do some damage, I dont see it happening and I see him staying to T Bay but only time will tell.

About those rumours on the possible Phoenix

acquisitions, whats happening Wayne havent you heard about the salary cap up there where hockey dont matter.

  12. Desertdog17 says:

Dude, the coyotes are in the best position for the cap, they have a full roster and are only at 29mil, where hockey “doesnt” matter, they sure seem to know alot about it, as they still have room for some big name players, go coyotes!

  13. wayne2 says:

I was talking about the city, not the organisation.

Gretzky knows about hockey but since the cap is

at 39 mil, that would mean Modano and/or Khabibulin would play for 5 mil max each.I know

teams will unfortunatly find a way to cheat but

anyways thats what it should mean.Sorry “dude“

if you live in Phoenix and love hockey but its still

doesnt make Phoenix a hockey city.

  14. Desertdog17 says:

I actually live in Canada, i just love the yotes cus i see there future to be very bright, they are young and very talented. I know it isnt a hockey city, but any city could turn into one, with some W’s under their belt. but i live where hockey is life.

  15. WYflyerfan says:

So is Phoenix the next Toronto??? Thinking they are going to sign every free agent. Now were they or were they not the team that went and dumped all their players for money and all of a sudden they are big spenderss now…. I don’t see it. They just signed a couple of big names before the lockout, I don’t see them spending to much more on old players. I think they might sign one free agent and bring in alot of youth. I don’t see them spending over 30 mil on sal.
