Reliable sources say this, yet some will still claim the Leafs will need to add to trade him. He has value, how much remains to be seen, but we will get more then cap space for him, IMO.

  2. nordiques100 says:

I think the only added incentive the Leafs should add in trade is to offer anywhere from taking $1 to $2 million in cap hit from the Phaneuf contract.

Even Phaneuf at 5.5-6 million per season cap hit wouldn’t be that bad for teams to take.

But, if you are going down to a $5 mil cap hit for Phaneuf. less than Niskanen, less than Wideman, then i think teams will give up assets for him.

  3. doorman says:

I guess it will boil down to what they can get for him at a full cap hit as opposed to retaining say 2mil per. All I can say is if they retain it better be worth it.

Trading up to 1st overall to get McDavid is most likely not going to happen, but I wonder if the team with the 2nd overall pick would trade it.

How far would you go for Jack Eichel? Toronto should get some more picks in the draft if they move players at the deadline, they have players like Gardiner that they can use to move up in the draft. I’d try hard to move up a few spots and grab Eichel. I can see Edmonton or Carolina moving down.

Eichel, Nylander and Rielly is almost as good as a rebuild can start.

I would move up for Eichel and trade many assets to do so. He is a generational type player in his own right. McDavid and he aren’t the same player so it’s hard to say how one would lose? Obviously all things being equal I would draft McDavid, based on a Toronto kid who want to play for the Leafs.

  5. Gambo says:

Would love the Leafs to acquire another late 1st to draft Brandon Carlo. 6’5″ right handed defenseman who is a strong skater, hits hard, has a heavy shot and is good at shutting opponents down.

  6. Gambo says:

Would anyone take a shot at Yakupov? Value is at an all time low right now, has crazy potential. It’s the type of risk rebuilding teams should take.

    • nordiques100 says:

yeah at same time MacT is going to ask for the world for him. He has overrated all his players. You will not get Yakubov cheap.

I don’t think he is the right fit for the Leafs either. The Leafs need players who care.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Nylander > Yakupov, don’t need him, don’t want him.

      • doorman says:

While I would not pay the farm for him, I think Yak cares more then people think. He loves the game and to score goals, the right influences could lead to changes, Hell look at Trotz and Ovie.

  7. doorman says:

If you could get the right add on with him, would anyone take a chance on acquiring a guy like Cody Hodgson from the Sabres in the right deal?

  8. Steven_Leafs0 says:

I wouldn’t want to “take a chance” on anyone. If we have to give up assets and the likelihood is we will end up with a player we will let walk to FA then we are not improving, we are slowing our rebuild by years.

Obviously there are deals that make these risks a no brainer but any solid asset for a question mark should not be considered IMO.

    • doorman says:

That’s why I said the right deal, was thinking more like the Lupul/Gardiner for Beauch trade.

      • Gambo says:

Exactly. Of course it would be dumb to trade a draft pick, but if you’re trading a roster player for him then that’s the type of smart risk you have to take. The Lupul/Gardiner trade is a perfect example.
