According to a report, it appears that Ilya Kovalchuk is on the verge of re-signing with the New Jersey Devils.

The New York Post is reporting that the unrestricted free agent, who played the final 27 games of last season with the Devils, is going to sign a seven-year, $60 million contract with the team as soon as Monday.

The Los Angeles Kings dropped out of the running for Kovalchuk on Sunday, while the New York Islanders have also indicated some interest in the Russian sniper.

  1. PatsLeafs says:

Upwards of 8.5 mil per year. Decent signing at that price, however i thought they only had roughly 4.7 mil in cap space.

  2. nordiques100 says:

they'll probably need to move Rolston and Zubrus. They'd then probably try and bring in a couple of more affordable centres rather than the 8.5 mil those two make combined.

If i were the leafs, i'd get in on the Zubrus sweepstakes. he is big, can play centre and wing and can play physical. Not the greatest price, 3 years left at 3.4 mil, but that 3.4 is more well spent than 3.5 on Finger.

he'd be the big, 3rd line centre the leafs could use. and he does have some scoring ability.

i think he could come relatively at a bargain considering the cap space you just quoted.

  3. LeafsneedSteen says:

I always had Lou pegged as the league's best GM.

  4. Boston_Bruins says:

Not sure how smart this is with Parise's contract up next year. I'd take Parise over Kovalchuk anyday. Greene will be looking for a pretty big raise next year as well.

Arnott might go even though they just got him. It will probably be tough to move Rolston. Elias is one of the faces of that franchise and it might be hard to move him with that contract anyways.

  5. LeafsneedSteen says:

Wait, this is most likely just a sign and trade for Kaberle…  Yep, gonna be another great year for Leaf Nation.

  6. nordiques100 says:

still pretty shocked the kings didnt land Kovalchuk if all this is true.

Then again, they could still get him. it is afterall the NY Post, not the most solid of hockey sources around.

  7. Boston_Bruins says:

Doesn't look like anything is settled. I've even heard rumours that the Thrashers are in it. I've also heard it could be 7 years at &9 million per.

  8. PatsLeafs says:

rolston might be tough to move with his NTC but Zubrus is a good call

  9. LeafsneedSteen says:

    Well back to square one….

And apparently the Leafs aren't out of it yet.

  10. reinjosh says:

Yeah no kidding. Parise is younger, can give you 40 goals and 40 assists (and he probably isn't done growing) and he is a great two way player. Maybe Parise has already told him he isn't happy there. Weird if it happens. I just can't see Lou doing that.

  11. reinjosh says:

I dont know how much I would trust Eklund. Yeah, he seems to be more on the ball these days but he is still Eklund. He still claims the Leafs have interest in Zherdev (as stupid as that sounds) although TSN has just debunked that rumor. Even logic could have debunked that and he still writes it.

  12. reinjosh says:

I wonder if anyone is still questioning Orr's salary. Boogard got $400 000 more a year and he does far less.

  13. LeafsneedSteen says:

We're officially out of the Zherdev race.

Is TSN in the habit of shooting down rumors with no basis?

There has been a lot of misinformation.  Both Philly and the Avs have denied any alleged offers to the Kovalchuk camp, NYI sits in limbo, the NYpost reported the to be made official this afternoon (not sure if NJ can even sign him at 8.5) and he was supposed to be a King by from what the more dependable sources have been saying.  Not sure if there is an authority outside of Kovalchuk.

That said, if there is a report of the Leafs getting in then it's most likely coming from Kovalchuk's agent or Toronto.  I doubt it's a pure fabrication (if for nothing else as we've discussed it makes too much sense to pursue him at around 8.5).

After this report I'd think more teams would be offering better term if they think they can't land him at 8.5 rather than 10.

  14. LeafsneedSteen says:

Better Orr for a million than throwing away drafts picks for Hogwell and Mayers.

  15. Tachmo says:

I think that is a great resign for NJ if that goes through. I really like Kovalchuk. He has gotten a bad rap for some reason. He has been buried in Atlanta and yah maybe they should have made the playoffs more, but they are a junk organization. It stills blows me away how Don Wadell even has a job still.
I think Kovalchuk did a fine job in the playoffs with NJ, he was all over the ice and had lots of scoring chances, but just didn't get it done.

I wish Boston had the room for him. I'd take him at 8.5 million any day. In the right lineup he is almost a lock to score 50 goals. At least 40 anyways.

  16. nordiques100 says:

RIP Bob Probert. The best fighter through the 80s/90s and a very good player.

  17. leafshockey says:

Scary, how quick the world can change. just like that.

  18. reinjosh says:

Yeah they have been doing that a lot lately. Sort of odd.

Apparently his agent said that Kovy was going to make a decision today. But I doubt thats happening anytime today anymore.

  19. nordiques100 says:

I dont know if that was meant as an insult but that was funny you anagramed Ryan Hollweg's name.

  20. lafleur10 says:

RIP BOB PROBERT THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES and some of the most memorable fights of all- time . probably the toughest guy in the history of the game there wasn't many,if anybody that could beat bobby probert in a scrap! i loved watching him battle chris nilan in some very legendary fights of all time
these 2 would toe to toe all the time i think probert tried to intimitadate knucklesnilan, the way he did to almost everybody…….but it didn't work and knuckles and him would drop'em and go! probaly and most likely the 2 toughest guys in the league in the 80's and 90! each 1 of these guys were the heavyweight champ amongst the tough guys in the league, and the 2 most feared guys in the league!

thanks again bobby probert r.i.p YO BE MISSED

  21. nordiques100 says:

    best fight was vs mcsorley.

i believe if he started his career a bit later with Detroit, Kris Draper doesnt get his jaw broken by Claude Lemieux.

Probert scored the last goal at MLG.

this will be funny if he resigns back in NJ.. I suggested to you he might back in JUNE and you called me a moron and a troll for being so stupid..

  23. LeafsneedSteen says:

It wasn't just because of that.

  24. leafy says:

Wow! This is a shocker. Very sad end to the life of the most ferocious fighter who ever lived.

Probert combined with Joey Kocur formed the most devastating 1-2 punch in hockey history. The Wings weren't powerful yet; Yzerman, Ogrodnick, and Gallant carried the offence. But I hated playing the Wings even more than Chicago and Minny because of Probert and Kocur.

Yea Lafleur, I remember those fights with Wendel. In fact, I saw one of them live. Back in 1987 the Leafs clobbered the Wings 6-0 at MLG and Wendel had a classic bout with Probert. That was also the game when John Brophy made the choke sign to Jacques Demers.

And what about those bouts in the early 90s between Probert and a very young Tie Domi? Those were the days.  RIP indeed.

  25. leafy says:

Classic fight. Here it is on YouTube. Players today can't fight like this. All they do is wrestle like a bunch of pus$ies.

  26. LeafsneedSteen says:

    Ummm…. Jeremy Ireland?

Oh right it was about that "soft deal" with Boston.. I remember who were sayin it was allbut  a done deal, yet I TOLD you it was never going to happen.. well last time I checked, Savard is not a member of the Leafs.. he also has a full NTC now, or maybe it was because you also told me Toronto was on Kovalchuk's "list of teams".. what happened there, I also remember you calling me a moron, troll because I also informed you he wasn't coming to Toronto.. or maybe that time you wrote that Toronto had a good chance of landing Marleau, whereas I was there again telling you it would never happen.. it seems I'm right pretty often..

  28. TmLeafan says:

You need to get over being called a troll.

  29. LeafsneedSteen says:

    Uh hun, then what happened?

  30. JoelJoel says:

    Yeah.. what a troll…

  31. Mapleleaves says:

when you say "it wont happen" your probabaly going to be right more often then wron when it comes to a trade..  one player may be different in the trade, all the players may be different, the trade doesnt happen at all.

How about try to predict a trade instead of just telling everyone theyre wrong, the reason the rumors are on here is because theyre in the media, its not like we just make them up and say "its 100% gunna hapen".

    Get over yourself.

  32. futurebruin says:

Wow.  If this goes through this may mean Parise won't be wearing a Devils uniform after next year.  I can only hope the Bruins would sign him if he reaches RFA status, but Chiarelli may be hesitant to give up draft picks for him.

  33. mojo19 says:

He could write for Spectorshockey.net. Spector takes every rumour then writes his 'spectors note' at the end and just says "I don't see this happening" to each one. He's almost always right because 99% of rumours don't come true. Big deal.

  34. mojo19 says:

Its kind of like when that habs guy guaranteed Marleau wouldn't sign with a Canadian team, then freaked out when Marleau re-signed with the Sharks.

Here's another prediction, doing my best impression of that guy: Mike Modano won't sign with Nashville. I *****ing guarantee that shit, you're all gonna look so stupid when I'm right! Ya! His wife told me he doesn't like Nashville.

  35. mojo19 says:

Jeremy's Iron. Tell you what I have a ball, perhaps you'd like to bounce it.

  36. mojo19 says:

Lou would never let go of Parise. He'd deal a number of other guys before it came to that.

  37. LeafsneedSteen says:

I guess all those times I wrote what a waste of money Marleau would be and that he wouldn't choose to play with Wilson really meant that I said he'd come to Toronto.
