Kovalev to Montreal
Souces close to the Team990 have reported that the Montreal Canadiens will annouce within the hour that they have signed Alex Kovelev.
It has been Rumoured that Kovelev was going to return to Pittsbourgh, but now that they have added high priced defenseman Sergie Gonchar, perharps the Russian snipper is out of their price range.
The deal is reportedly for 4 years.

YESSIR!!! Hopefully we got him for very close to 4 mil..then we have some valuable cap room left to pursue a quality dman..rafalski,hamrlik,schneider maybe?? We needed Kovy back so badly..i’m sure Saku is thrilled.
Does this take Montreal out of the running for Satan?
I would think that they want to spend on a dman now. but you never know with Gainey. i heard that the habs are in the running for forsberg. so whether its satan or (cross your fingers) forsberg, dont think adding another forward is out of the question.
Good News for Habs fans, without him in the lineup I think “my” bruins would have beat the habs in the first round two years ago, but he was the difference. All these teams are signing big name players over the last 2 days I hope Boston can still jump in and get Modano/Satan/Leetch, at least one of the three would be a great help!!!
I hope so. Satan belongs on the Devils (especially if he was ever made Captain). 😀
Even as a leaf fan i think this is a good move for the canadiens. But who could ever forget what he pulled the last time they were in the playoffs? Trying to draw a penalty that cost the team the game? Gross.
Time for him and the team to forget about it and move on, 4 years is a hefty contract.
Bummer for Pens fans I was hoping he’d go back to PGH, but at least he’s in Montreal. Good day for alot of teams so far. What’s Satan set to make? Think the Pens will take a run at him since the Kovy deal fell through?
If they did it, I have to give Gainey credit for finally bringing a talented player to Montreal. This is the first good signing in many years.
I predict this : Kovy, Satan and Dandenault for the habs…With Kovy back, It maybe stimulating for other free agents to sign in Montreal…But i’m so glad the #27 is back
As a Hab fan, I was all in favor of Gainey’s patient approach initially but I must admit I was starting to worry…
I’m very happy to have Kovalev back, he has some attitude problems but so does Satan, the other top sniper available…
ya, definately I would love to see them add another d-man instead of a forward, but if both are possible, then by all means, that’d be great.
I don’t think he was really trying to draw a penalty, he took a good slash to his hand. He just took himself right out of the play and unfortunately took the d-man out with him.
With the rate that CP is moving, the season will start before he decides to make any moves.
So far, he has been very disappointing.
So if we don’t sign anyone else, we’re looking at a line-up similar to this. Hopefully we can dump Rivet somehow. That’s a ton of young guys, could be very iffy if we want to be competitive. We need Ribeiro and Ryder to put up numbers like they did last year. Dagenais could be in the mix too, he can put the puck in the net for sure, but can’t skate.
Zednik-Koivu-Kovalev
Ryder-Ribeiro-Perezhogin
Bulis-Bonk-Sundstrom
Plekanec-Begin-Higgins
Markov-Souray
Rivet-Komisarek
Boullion-Hainsey
I don’t want to come back on this story…I was there that night…and it was one of the worst night ever for the habs fans…kovy error, defense error, jose error…and a lost
The bottom line is that Kovalev has only been a star player on the Pens, and will not be a 40+ goal scorer on any other team.
(And yes, that comment is generated by my jealousy that Kovy isn’t coming back to Pittsburgh)
Looks like we’re looking at $4.5M per year for 4 years.
And then Kovalev and Theodore came back to win us the series 😉
I expected more as well, but I like the Gonchar move.
I like HIM as well, but the terms and money in the deal is a little disturbing. 25 million guaranteed money??
you got a few things confused:
a) zednik is a right winger
b) markov and souray play the same side on D, so they cant be paired together
and c) i dont thinkthe habs still have sundstrum under contract ……but that one im not sure of…
Has anyone confirmed it? rds.ca is citing tsn but I don’t see it on TSN
I think the Habs could take both.. Kovalev around 4millions a year and Satan around 3millions..
I saw it on The Fourth Period
That’s why I said it would look SIMILAR to that. It was a quick write up of who Montreal has or will very likely have, and who “could” play on who’s line. I wasn’t looking at which side players play on, it was just a very basic outline.
Sundstrom is listed on the Habs roster on their website, so I assumed he was, but really I have no idea.
TSn now has it as reported but not confirmed. Lots of people have the details.
Boston has added a few names but Modano won’t be one of them
i think Satan might be out of their price range, i’d love to see him in the Montreal uniform, but he may be expensive.
didn’t Sundstrum get bought out only to get resigned to a 3 year contract for cheaper?
I still find it hard to believe it… I thought this week that finally Kovalev was a lock to go to Pittsburgh and then he turn around and sign with Montréal.
That news made my day!
