Latest Rumors from around the League…

The latest on the Avs, Devils, Rangers, Blues, Islanders, Leafs, and Sabers…. These rumors have been reported on Spectorshockey.net:

1. The Gonchar Sweepstakes: Toronto, New Jersey, Dallas, Boston, Vancouver, Nashville and Colorado are the teams interested in Gonchar, Olaf Kolzig and Brendan Witt. The Avs are the closest to landing Gonchar and Kolzig. The Avs are willing to give up Morris, and that basically puts all other teams out of competition. The Leafs seem to have lost the race to the Avs. There’s no way the Leafs can match the reported offer by Colorado unless they give up most of their future. That seems unlikely! Witt seems better suited, but what will be the asking price for him? Are the Caps willing to give him up? Not likely. They do not want to break up the core of their defense.

Favourite: Colorado

2. The Leetch Sweepstakes: New Jersey, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas are all reported to be interested in the veteran defenseman. The Leafs and Flyers seem to have the edge in this race. The Leafs seem to have given up on Gonchar, and have turned their attention to Leetch. He is much cheaper than Gonchar, and fits better in T.O. The Flyers, meanwhile, might turn it up a notch with the recent injury to yet another defeseman. The Devils seem a very unlikely destination for Leetch as the two teams have never made a trade. Boston might be the dark horse in this race. They might jump into the race at any moment, especially of they can’t land Gonchar. The asking price for Leetch would be a prospect and a high pick.

Favourite(s): Leafs and Flyers

Prediction: Leafs: Antropov and a first rounder for Leetch

Note: Leetch has two more years on his contract…

3. The Pronger Situation: Reports out of Toronto have stated that the Blues are shopping Pronger. The Blues’ management were quick to deny it. They said that they are trying to re-sign him. Pronger’s agent even tried to find out the source of these rumors. The Islanders were believed to be interested. Personally, I don’t see Pronger going anywhere, and if he does, the return will extremely high. It is believed the Islanders are interested.

4. Islanders looking for a blockbuster: The NY Islanders are reportedly seeking to trade for one of Chris Pronger, Brendan Witt, or Vitali Vishnevsky. The Islanders are also believed to be interested in Buffalo’s Miroslav Satan. Satan has stated that he will likely be moved at the deadline.

5. The Sabers would like to add some long-term defense help. The Sabers have said that they are willing to move one of their forward prospects, but they want a much more than a rental player. The Sabers are losing ground on the Islanders who are 9 points ahead. Sabers have contacted the Rangers about forward Alexie Kovalev, but I don’t see this trade happening.

Everyone has all these sources, but the fact is Gonchar isn’t going anywhere until tuesday. McPhee has already cut his 18 million dollars in salary and he’s going to continue to wait till the deadline before he trades Gonchar so his price will keep going up. I’ve only seen the Leafs make one major deal in the last few years (Nolan) and right now that doesn’t look like a good deal, so I would be surprised if the Leafs passed on Gonchar.

as a wings fan who lives in phoenix, i would love it if colorado picks up gratton….he seriously sucks

  3. Kashin says:

    Wow.

I got my hopes up when i open the newspaper this morning and i read about pronger or satan. The only problem that i had was it was on my mind the entire day and i am getting my hopes up.

Truth is the isles dont need pronger. but how sweet would it be to have pronger, aucoin and jonnson. thye will have to give up niinnimma or hamrlik their pick next year weinhandl and or pappaneu and bergeinheim or robert nillson. 2 of those 4.

satan would be a great fit. gets to be with his former teammate peca.

However this is where the Mad Mike thing comes in. Darcy Reiger hates HATES Milbury because he was set to be his assistant GM until Milbury fired him 1 day into the job so like the peca trade they wont get off cheap.

Odds are Milbury will do better then Witt but Pronger is a l o n g shot. as of now

leetch will end up in boston if he is traded. i have that feeling.

I guess you have to make the playoffs to get bounced eh !!! sorry bro, couldn’t resist.

  7. nordiques100 says:

If I were the Blues I would trade Chris Pronger now. Think about it. The Blues have 2 young guys back there to build around in Jackman and Backman and Jackman could eventually be a Norris Trophy winner down the road. So they are pretty solid there. If the Blues dont resign Pronger and there is no hockey next year, then Pronger will be a unrestricted free agent in 2006 and could walk for nothing. If he does sign with St Louis, that is 10+ million taken up in salary already and if there is a salary cap as expected, likely a third or a quarter of the team’s payroll will be invested in one player and it isnt likely that the Blues will be a big market team in the new NHL. Plus, why would Pronger resign with the Blues if they will have to get rid of most if not all of their top players to afford him as Tkachuk, Demitra, Weight take up 25 million in payroll alone, so they too will likely be gutted by the Blues. It would make no sense on his part to resign with a rebuilding team, especially since he has yet to win a Cup. So if the Blues can get a ton of solid young players for Pronger, then they should do it now before it is too late. I am sure Demitra, Tkachuk and Weight will also fetch a good amount of youngsters too. So while Pronger is there and tradeable, they should do it now and likely they will receive top value for him. Would it not suck as a Blues fan to see Pronger get up and sign with the Wings, Avs or Stars for nothing and then beat up on them in the playoffs? Well that will likely happen if they dont move him now because I think Pronger will want to play for a contender and win before he retires and that wont happen with the Blues.

    thats right.

Isn’t david tanabe out for the season?

  10. BosBrn77 says:

If I had to pick a weakness on the Isles team… it would be goaltending. Dipietro is still learning(and he will be one of the best) and Snow could easily be upgraded.

As for the third pairing… maybe the problem is in the pairings. Why not play Cairns with Niinimaa and Butenschon with Hamrlik. Or something to that effect.

The Isles have four of the top 20 d-men in the game… IMHO!

  11. nskerr says:

I totally agree. The Isles offense has been pretty damn good, epecially considering Yashin and Parrish were out for so long and Shawn Bates didn’t score for 30 games.

The D on the otherhand han’t been as good as it should. Aucoin and Jonsson are rocks. But Niinimaa is a liability in my opinion and Hamrlik has been average.

I would love an upgrade on D, either by acquiring another D man or by moving Niinimaa. I would also like another scoring wing (Satan) but that is too much to ask.

The Isles today announced a plan that a fan that buys season tickets for next year gets FREE playoff tickets this year in the 1st and 2nd round. Either that means the Isles don’t think they are going anywhere, so the lost playoff revenue will be made up in seaon ticket sales, or they will make a few moves to get to the 3rd round when they start charging customers. It should be interesting to see.

  12. gr8haluschak says:

everyone here seems to be grasping at straws on where is Pronger going to go, I hate to tell you he is not going to the Leafs, Avs, Wings…etc. You guys seem to say use the excat same reasoning for him to go somewhere and that is The Blues will be in huge trouble if there is a salary cap so they need to trade him. Now here is where all of you guys grasping straws look just stupid, the worst of anyone who has been feeding this fire is that dip %$#& Nick Kyperos, the Avs and Leafs have considerably higher payrolls than the Blues, now just call me stupid for saying this, I don’t know, but if there is a salary cap would it not apply to the Leafs or Avs as well, and if so they would be in the same boat as the Blues in terms of salary.

  13. BosBrn77 says:

This is just an idea… but!!

With the so-called rumors that Boston is offering up Samsonov(which are untrue according to the Assistant Gm), why would they trade young talent away for a player they could lose at the end of the year? I have an idea for a large trade involving the Bruins and the Oilers.

    To Edmonton: Samsonov, Gill, Huml, a 1st in 2004 and a 3rd in 2005

To Boston: Oates, Brewer, Laraque, and Dvorak.

This would give Edmonton a young scoring speedster(Samsonov), a big stay at home d-man(Gill), a young forward with plenty of potential(Huml) and two good picks. Not to mention it would save them almost 1.5 million in salary.

Boston needs another d-man, a second line center, another scoring winger and a gritty skilled forward.

Boston’s lines would then look like this.

    Knuble-Thornton-Murray

    Bergeron-Oates-Dvorak

    Axellson-Rolston-LaPointe

    Donato(Zamuner)-Green-Laraque

    Brewer-Slegr

    O’Donnell-Morrison

    Boynton-McGillis

    Raycroft-Potvin

Just a thought. Could turn the Bruins into Cup contenders for the first time since the early 90’s!

Just a few things to post of interest as of 8:00 on Tuesday.

Goncahr took the pregame warmup and apparently told by the team that he wouldn’t be playing. Maybe this is the the real thing who knows. The last time Washington played Florida, Jagr was traded, and the other time they played Florida Bondra was traded. So maybe Florida sparks something in McPhee to get a deal done.

    Second point…

TSN mentioned something interesting as to who should people go for on the Rangers.

Everyone usually mentions Leetch, and Kovalev but why not Rucinsky. This guy is one of the only forwards with a plus rating. His TSN Bio has him as playing a strong defensive game while having speed to challenge opposing defenseman.

Do you think this is a guy that Sather will build around or could he be gone by the deadline.

The reason I post these names is because I think that the leafs will be looking for another skilled winger to pick up. Especially on left wing.

The leafs have the grit to play a tough game but need that skill to out do the big slower defensemen of other teams. Look at Mogilny in last years playoffs. He alone caused Philli’s defense fits.

Any Ranger fans out there what is your opinion on Rucinsky.

The leafs will be in the hunt for Gonchar, The leafs will pick up a big defenseman that can clear the net. Not a big name but someone that is a UFA or something and they should pick up that left winger to play the second line with Niewendyk or the third line with Nolan.

Hell ask St. Louis for Weinrich and offer a 6th round pick. They picked him up for a fifth rounder?? Wouldn’t it be nice to have him against Philladelphia, and wouldn’t that just piss off Clarke

what i think would work is to trade peca and a pick for pronger. that would only increase payroll by 5 mil, shouldnt be too much to ask. that way we could have pronger-hamrlik, jonsson-aucoin, and niinimaa-cairns. i dont think anyone can touch that

  17. the_expert_44 says:

niinimaa was paired with cairns earlier on, didnt quite work out, and i doubt niinimaa was too thrilled about that

  18. seinfeld says:

If the leafs trade antropov and a 1st for leetch, they’re really screwed themselves. That is in no way a good deal. Leetch is too old to be worth that much, and i’d rather have antropov in the current situation. Obviously, what the leafs need is a stay-at-home defenseman, someone who can control the game in the defensive zone, and set the defense tone in the game, aka. JASON SMITH! Leafs shouldn’t lose the oppurtunity to get this guy.

For now, forget about gonchar, forget about leetch, and dont get me started on dafoe. Smith is the guy they should aim for. The leafs are currently 2nd in the league in defensive point scoring (with 138 points), there is no need to add more offensive weapons on defense. I think the leafs defensive core would be much more affective with the addition of Jason Smith than Sergei Gonchar.

  19. commonwealth says:

Considering the fact that we traded Drury and Yelle for McAmmond, Shantz(yawn) and Morris, would it not be trading Drury and Yelle for Gonchar?

I just don’t know if Pierre wants to give up Morris. I know he’s been lacking in the offense lately, but he is still a solid defensemen with alot of potential. I think I agree with the post about if Morris was offered why is this deal still not done? I think it would be smarter to offer a few picks and a younger prospect like the kid we got from Buffalo in the Reinprect deal for Gonchar and forget about Kolzig…

Why make Aebischer think he’s not as good as Kolzig? I say get someone like Irbe, Shields or Dafoe and go into the playoffs with good D, and hope Karyia and Sellane will get off their *****ing high horse and score some goals…

of course… it doesn’t really matter what I think does it Pierre?

    -out

  20. kidhenry1 says:

They can’t deal Peca. Remember what happened when they dumped Jason Wiemer? Big losing streak. He may not be scoring, but he’s the heart and soul of this team, and a true locker room leader. Pronger would be great, but it’s not worth what we lose in Michael Peca.

  21. matrix2003 says:

i know, holy shit, it won’t cost that much. THIt won’t cost them a player off the roster. I say a mid-level prospect and a first rounder. If they were to trade Antropov they would want more back in return. I was watching TSN tonight and heard Bob MacKenzie suggest that Lindros could find his way to Toronto for a 5th rounder. His trade value is at an alltime low for obvious reasons and he has said before that he wants to play in TO, but I think it would cost more than a 5th rounder I don’t know where Bob got that value from, I say a 2nd rounder probably gets him. If Eric doesn’t get traded to TO he’ll sign with them (if there is hockey next year that is).

  22. greatlife15 says:

Why does every trade that is suggested that Toronto do include a first rounder? Yes, T.O. may be in the low first round but we still keep our pick. Deal the pick for Gonchar, or Leetch, or Smith. Forget that keep the pick and you just might get lucky!

  23. nhl_trade_007 says:

I WISH YE WOULD STOP TAKING BOUT PRONGER COMING TO TORONTO. WE DON’T NEED HIM OR GONCHAR. BY THE WAY THOSE WIT A LIFE WOULD KNOW THAT REPORTS COMING FROM BOTH TSN AND SPORTNET TELL US THAT GM AND COACH OF ST.LOUI HAVE MADE IT VERY CLEAR PRONGER WON’T B TRADED TO ANYONE AT ALL !!!!!!!!

    PEACE

  24. seinfeld says:

Lindros can be a liability tho. With his current physical state. However, the leafs have to show some seriousness approaching the deadline. Get some doctors to check Lindros out thoroughly, he comes to Toronto to medically treated, look some stuff up. If JFJ can really show his worth, he should really try to get the best deal possible. The leafs need to keep their youth, but Lindros isnt all that old, and neither is Smith. They’ve gotta use their heads here, why waste so much youth to get something they dont need, unless they get Gonchar and trade him for someone else, although highly unlikely. Offer Edmonton Wellwood + 2nd or something, maybe thats even too much, who knows..all i know is that its much better and cheaper then what they offered to Washington for Gonchar.

  25. bruinexpert says:

obviously you don’t understand what he’s saying…he’s upset that toronto isn’t offering enough to get these big name players…any team out there has enough prospects and draft picks to acquire any player out there…it’s just a matter of whether or not they’re willing to pull the trigger

  26. Leafs88 says:

What do you trade then?? Carlo and Stajan, or Steen and Wellwood, or Telqvist and Bell??? The most valuable asset the Leafs have that they can trade is the pick…

  27. Leafs88 says:

Maybe Quinn still doesn’t want Jason Smtih back… But I agree, bring him in and let Pat screw himself..

  28. Leafs88 says:

    Shut up!!!

  29. Leafs88 says:

First of all, sorry about the spelling mistake. Second of all, I didn’t ay he asked for a trade. I said that he said that he expected to be traded at the deadline. Maybe he has been told by the team that he is being shopped. I certainly see this with the SABRES being 11 points out of the playoffs.

  30. Leafs88 says:

Gonchar is expected to make 6-7 million next year, while Leetch has one year left on his contract.

  31. Leafs88 says:

Good point!! But I heard this is asking price on some site. You are right the Leafs aren’t that dumb…

  32. Leafs88 says:

  33. BosBrn77 says:

That is why I added “or something to that effect.” Try him with Hamrlik, Johnson, or Aucoin?

You guys really have some great d-men. I think a little re-working of the pairings would give you guys an advantage over most team in the league… not just the East!

  34. Jimmy2BallBagsFU says:

Rucinsky had played well with a big center(Lindros or Holik) and he draws alot of penalties by simply becoming a *****.but as a rags fan i like him and like him playing with Jagr

  35. The_Cubs_Of_Hockey says:

The word around the campfire here in St. Louis is not the availability of Pronger but the availability of Doug Weight. He has been an absolute flop here in St. Louis (save the Vancouver series in the playoffs last year) and can be had. The hot and heavy rumor is that he is headed to Philadelphia for Handzus and a pick or two.

BTW, KFNS is a joke of a radio station and I would not believe a word ever spoken on their airwaves. For a much more acurate picture of the ST. Louis sports scene, read hadleyonsports.com. John Hadley works for KTRS her in St. Louis and is a reliable source of information.

  36. Devilsmann says:

Does anyone know if the devils are going to get anyone new??

I think the devils need a good dman and also a natural score like Glen murry or samsonov.

Samsonov would do so good with the devils because of the way that they play. He would get so much room to skate and stickhandle, which would mean more goals.

What do u think the devils need??

    Let me know plaese

  37. Devilsmann says:

tucker is not going anywhere because he has married Pat Quinns daughter, Pat quin would make sure that they owner does not trade him because than his daughter would have to move, no matter where it is. Quin would not like playing against his son inlaw.

  38. Devilsmann says:

what r u talking about. Brian Leetch, Ron Francis, Belfore. where have u been.

  39. hockey_man1468 says:

I find this story hard to believe, although it would be nice. Also, regarding the Coyotes being told to prepare to play – why would Trevor Linden tell Phoenix players to get ready, while his own keepe, Dan Cloutier, heads off to Austria. Naslund just went to Sweden too.

Surely the guy with the front row seat in all this would keep his teammates informed.

  40. hockey_man1468 says:
