Laviolette, Cole together again?

Carolina winger Erik Cole has heard the rumors that he could be reunited with Peter Laviolette – his coach when the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006 – in a trade with the Flyers.

Cole, 32, is taking it in stride, though he said he enjoyed playing for Laviolette.
Laviolette was “a coach who believed in me as a player and what I could do. His expectations of me, at times, were even higher than my own,” said Cole before Thursday night’s game against the Flyers. “And sometimes when you have a situation like that, it makes for a good opportunity.”

A potential unrestricted free agent after the season, Cole would not be able to nix a deal. The trade deadline is Feb. 28.

“It’s not like I have a no-trade clause or anything like that,” he said. “At the end of the day, this is a business, and this is our job. We’re fortunate to do what we do, but there’s always sort of an underbelly to everything. To move and change cities and change teams is not always the best thing, but it’s not always the worst, either. Things like that, you can’t control and you have to go out and continue to perform.”

Laviolette is high on Cole. So are the Flyers, sources said. The winger has 14 goals and 17 assists while averaging 18 minutes, 4 seconds per game.

For the moment, Cole said his thoughts are directed toward helping Carolina earn a playoff spot. The Canes entered Thursday clinging to the eighth and last spot in the crowded East, and he probably won’t be traded unless Carolina falls out of the playoff hunt.

“We’ve got enough on our own plate. As my buddy says, you’ve got to keep your eye on your own bobber,” he said with a laugh.

I like Cole as well but i don’t think it will happen. I would like to see Upshall back with the club, but that won't happen as long as Phx is in the playoffs.  Also how about Modin for a 7th round pick. There has been a lot of talk about the Flyers pickin up another veteran goalie, what do you guys think? They already have Leights on the farm so they would have to deal somebody or that crease for the Phantoms will become pretty crowded.  Other names i would like to throw out there are :  Clb- Moreau ( if healthy ), Fla – Bernier , Stillman ( if healthy ) Vokoun,   Min – Brunette or Madden, NYI – Parenteau or even Ruutu from Ottawa.  Any other thoughts, lets get some discussion going here on one of the best teams in the league, instead of clogging up this site with more Leaf clutter.  I'm sure some people will find a way to incorporate Leaf comments into this discussion, because it doesn't matter what the topic  is it all seems to funnel back to the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Alright Leaf fans lets hear it.

The Flyers don't have the prospects to get Vokoun I think. Unless they are willing to move their first, I just can't seem them doing any deal for that.

I honestly think your best bet is a goalie with playoff experience. Your not going to like it but Giguere is probably your best bet. He will come cheap enough.

  3. hockey_lover says:

No, no, nooooooooooooooo.  As if the Flyers need to get better 😛  the Pens will never catch them at this rate 😛

In all seriousness, Im still worried about the Flyers goaltending. Sure, they are doing well right now but Boucher has constantly proved he is not the big game guy and Sergei is a rookie. Sure, rookie goalies CAN win (see Chicago) but its less likely than a proven goalie.

Obviously, Philly is a goal scoring machine. Its unreal. However, scoring does drop in the playoffs. So, their goaltending is going to need to be a bit better, in my opinion.

Who can they get? Not sure.

would you Flyers fan do this 3 way trade.

    to Nashville= A Kostitsyn, 1st, Leblanc

    to Philly= Lindback, Franson

    to Montreal= VanRiemsdyk, 2nd

  5. wec69 says:

maybe you are right on Vokoun.  I do like Giguere but i do not know if it will be too much money cap wise.  I also like Versteeg but i think Burke will ask for more than Philly can give up.

  6. reinjosh says:

Vokoun would probably be the best option if it weren't for his probable price. Giguere while cheap, will be taxing on your cap. It's a good point.

If it happens it will be as close to the deadline as possible to try and get more cap space. Boucher would probably be going to the Leafs (cap reasons). It would be a tricky trade to do but I think it might be the best option.

Versteeg would be a nice addition to the Flyers but your completely right about Burke wanting a lot. Moving him only makes sense if he gets a better package than the one he gave up for him and probably a good amount more. That probably doesn't make sense for the Flyers to go after him. Still I would love to get JVR 😛

I honestly think Holmgren is going into the playoffs with the attitude of "goaltending be damned". Past history suggests nothing will be done about the issue.

I agree that goaltending might be an issue however maybe not as big as some think. Bobrovsky is playing great but its the defense that is the big thing for me. Its incredibly strong. It might be strong enough to go with a rookie goalie. However, they should have gone after Roloson as a backup.

Now they need to go after one of Anderson, Conklin or Theodore. All have playoff experience and all can be starters for periods of time if necessary. And what's more, they are cheaper than some of the better options. As much as I would love to get something for Giguere from them, its not happening.

  8. wec69 says:

agreed.  sorry for the leaf comments but it is all in fun and it is just nice to read about other teams,  thats all.

  9. wec69 says:

As confident as i am with this tandem, it would be nice to get some insurance.  I agree with reinjosh that Philly will probably not do anything with the goalies, hope it does not come back to bite them in the @ss.

  10. wec69 says:

probably not because it does not addressthe need for either a vet goalie or offensive depth.

  11. reinjosh says:

No worries. No offense taken. I completely understand. Talking about teams every once in a while is good.

  12. THENOTORIOUS says:

    how about..

    to Philly=Booth, Volkoun, 2nd

    to Montreal =Van Riemsdyk, 1st rounder,Betts

    to florida=Kostitsyn, Eller, 1st, Leblanc

  13. HABSRULEFOREVER says:

Why do you want to trade Kostistyn so bad? Every post I read from you is about trading away Kostistyn.. You and I know if they trade him, he'll become a 30-40 goal scorer LOL… No way they'll trade Leblanc also.. Van Riemsdyk sucks as well… I think Montreal needs to these trades:
    NYI: Zonopka
    MTL: 2011 3rd round pick

OTT: Philips, Carkner,2011 3rd round pick
MTL: 2011 1st round draft pick

    NJ: Arnott
MTL: 2012 2nd round draft pick

  14. frankinboltonleafs says:

I guess Maurice doesn't motivate Cole enough? Imagine if Cole were a Leaf and the media firestorm that would ensue after that comment re: Laviolette! Nothing like playing in the tobacco belt.

  15. THENOTORIOUS says:

How can you say that, I love Andrei kostitsyn but Montreal is doing him wrong, I stuck up for him when everyone else wanted to trade him, the problem with AK is that he doesn't speek much and for some reason other players never back him up, when he gets hits hard nobody defends him when he should be one of our most important player. For all this I blame mostly coaching over the years, all I'm saying is that nobody helped him since he's been in Montreal, Every nights he plays on a different lines even at the begining of the year when no one else was scoring but Andrei but it's all been forgoten and for some sort of reason he was sent on the Gomez line???, Martin doesn't show any sort of respect toward AK , remember when AK came in the ligue playing for Claude Julien or his 1st year playin for Carboneau so how can a guy with so much talent start regressing over the past 2 year, one thing I know is not many players in this league had as much pressure as Andrei Kostitsyn did in the past 5 years!

I am one of those people that wishes Andrei go somewhere else and start tearing it up and he will, just like his Brother did.

  16. THENOTORIOUS says:

I love Zonopka, but I also think that Van Riemsdyk will become a great player, he's like a better pacioretty.

As for Leblanc, I think he's going to be a bust, hasn't got a pts in his last 8 or 9 games and while playing in Quebec hockey league which is known for being offensive league yet…at his age he should of been in AHL by now, I won't hold my breath but..

  17. THENOTORIOUS says:

In my opinion it's almost sure that they are going to go after Vokoun and they should.

Philly is scary up front and the last thing they need is offense and their defense looks pretty darn good if not the best so I really think that they need to address the goalie issue, I don't see Bobrovski or Boucher Winning a cup but who knows?
