Leafs Close To Aquiring Pronger!?

The Toronto Star is reporting that the Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers are closing in on a deal which should involve Chris Pronger and Tomas Kaberle!

Kaberle has signed a new five-year deal with a no-

traded clause, but it takes effect July 1st.

Meanwhile, the Leafs continue to wait on Bryan McCabe’s yes or no on an five-year contract offer.

Any comments or possible trades?

rather have kaberle believe it or not… raycroft deal was alright… hopefully he can bounce back from a horrible season; rask is joining the army next year, kinda gay.

  2. Marky2Fresh says:

Bob McKenzie said the same thing, so hopefully it’s true

  3. scout says:

    Pronger is a pipe dream

He’s the kind of player and this is the kind of deal that is way beyond JFJ’s capabilities. He thinks his job is to provide the Marlies with talent.

    Andrew Raycroft?

    for what?

He is now stocked with 3 good AHL goalies. Raycroft, Telquist and Aubin. Great for the Marlies but what about the Leafs?

JFJ is stockpiling scouts and free agent collegians to bolster the Marlies. So when they move the team from St. John’s to the Ricoh Centre this is what they mean by bringing a championship team to Toronto.

JFJ is a lightweight, the Rob Bab***** of the NHL. He’s in way over his head.

    Raycroft?????????????

  4. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

OMG now JFJ wants to get rid of Kaberle for an older d-man in proger if he does this, some one please shoot him, he is going to cripple this organization further before he is booted out of here.

  5. burnz30 says:

This would be great news. Get Pronger, and let McCabe walk and sign one or 2 middle UFAs (Mckee, Potheir, Kenny Jonsson, ect)

  6. bustaheims says:

Well, there’s a nice leap in logic. The article in the Star suggests that the Leafs could be interested in making a trade for Pronger, and they suggest that Kaberle might be considered as part of that deal. At no point do they say that they are closing in on a deal with either of these players involved.

Yeah, Pronger will probably be traded. Yes, the Leafs are probably very interested. But even JFJ isn’t stupid enough to trade Kaberle for Pronger while keeping McCabe. If anything, it’ll be a freshly signed McCabe going the other way before his no-movement clause kicks in.

  7. PaulK123 says:

Actually I have a source in the Toronto Star and

    they are close!

  8. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

And who would this source be, but better yet who the hell are you? We need some credibility before we can believe some obscure bs about a deal iminent especially when it involves us as leafs fans.

  9. bustaheims says:

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Who’s your source? Your paper boy? Cuz mine says they’re still nowhere close.

  10. Leafz_blood says:

Jus finished watchin Sportsnet news.. as Nick stated:

    To Toronto: Chris Pronger

    To Edmonton: Karberle, matt stajan…

I dont think this deal wud work out.. edmonton wants Alex Steen in the deal wid Karberle.. n it wud be really stupid of JFJ to pull this trade.. as Karberle is young n steady whereas Pronger is growin Old.. and givin up Steen is to much !

I suggest the leafs trade tellqvist and Domi + McCabe to Montreal for Aebischer …

this is how it will look like

To Toronto: Aebischer, Sheldon Souray and Tomas Plekanec

To Montreal: McCabe, Domi and Telly

  11. Aetherial says:

It is bad enough that they gave up Rask for a crappy goalie who is no better (probably worse) than what they already have…

but giving up Kaberle for Pronger at this stage of their careers and development would be insane.

  12. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

they wanted kabby and steen, dream on. Pronger will never EVER have a better season that some of his years in the past including last season, his marked value is cranked, his salary is cranked, nd his ego is cranked (asking to be traded after the cup run the oilers had). He’s overrated and over priced, so i can see the leafs and rangers jumping all over him

  13. skidragoon says:

but how can u blame him, who would want to play for the stinky oilers

You are a douche. If the leafs didnt sign rask in a year he goes back in the draft. He has to serve time in the military also. Rask is a WAY bigger risk than Raycroft. Would I rather Nabokov?Yes but Raycroft is a pretty good goalie and remember he is still only 26 and should still improve.

The leafs have a good number of D-men for the future without Kaberle but need a big name like Pronger for a moral boost if nothing else…it would show Sundin that they are still committed to winning and hopefully get him to re-sign.

With all of that said Raycroft wins approx. 15 games and Pronger goes to the Rangers.

  15. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

the “stinky oilers” mad it to the cup finals, and MADE the playoffs. Why would he leave a team that made te playoffs to go to a team that didnt (leafs)

  16. Toonces99 says:

This possible trade has to be looked at in a couple of different ways…..first and foremost Pronger is and always will be better than Kaberle, they do have different types of games but talent wise not even close…secondly, this would allow the Leafs to look at more options as it would free up some money in order to pursue a couple of other free agents….3rd, Pronger does not have a no trade clause in his contract…McCabe and Kaberle do (limited ones) but none the less would have to provide permission to make the trade happen…4th, most people tend to forget that when you have a star d-man, (especially ones that have won the heart trophy) it will draw other players to the organization and provide an opportunity for some players to learn from a guy like this and also play with him…5th, the Leafs would finally have an asset in the organization and has trophys to prove it…This guy is worth anything the Oilers want…Give them Steen well worth it to acquire Pronger…Am l missing something here, some people on this board are saying Pronger is too old and Kaberle would be better suited because of his age, he’s good, but’s he’s no Pronger….People give you head’s a shake…THIS IS CHRIS PRONGER were talking about, even at 30 he still has 3-4 good years left in him and at 6.25 mill well worth it especially that the leafs don’t have a bonafide goalie in net. Guys like this don’t come around very often, let alone state that they would play for you…..I would take Pronger over Blake, Chara, and especially McCabe..He’s a horse and has learned to play with-in the new NHL (74 PIMs last year).

  17. Toonces99 says:

“Overrated and over priced” that statement alone shows your hockey knowledge…Please give you head a shake and look at the whole picture..as fas as having as good years as in the past…maybe not, but much better than what the leafs have now….He has 4 years left and is commanding just over 6 mill….overprice..look around the NHL and you tell me if he is paid to much for that type of d-man…JOVO will go for more than that and do you think he is better than Pronger…Chara will demand 7.5 million plus and he’s better than pronger? Come on please use logic and not emotion…3rd most points in his career last year..10 pp goals..almost 28 minutes per game….but hey, stat’s are over-rated also……right?

  18. scout says:

    McCabe is a free agent

or if he signs its with a no trade clause

and Bob Gainey is not stupid

  19. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

he had a great year like McCabe did so his market value is higher than his playing ability indicates. That means he’s overrated.

Jovo will not sign for over 6 mil, you picked that one out of your ass.

i dont understand why people think its an insult to insult someones hockey knowledge. Its oppiion. I bet Pronger is in the top 5 d-men in the league, arguably the best in the league. but at 6.25mil, and a price of kabby and steen, plus 6.25 on the cap. he aint worth it.

pronger had 56 points and a +2 ratimng last year

Kabby had 67 points and a -1 rating last year.

little difference in stats 2 million difference in salary

  20. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

he’s ot a horse he dstruggles with ice time at times. kaberle has a better future, and so does steen. pronger is not as good as kaberle in point production, in ice time or in the defencive aspect. kabby is a franchise player, pronger is an inconsistent one.

plus he wont come to Toronto because he’s requested to play for a team in the US

  21. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

your right pronger will go to the rangers, and he’ll do well there, but trading kaberle is about the dumbest move you can make. kaberle is a franchise player in toronto. He’s done so well in Toronto, its not right to reward him by making him trade bait for a guy who doesn’t want to play here in the first place.
