Leafs close to signing Salmelainen

According to Finnish website Ilta-sonomat, the Toronto Maple Leafs are close to signing free agent forward Tony Salmelainen.

Salmelainen is currently waiting for the deal to be finalized. In translation, the former Chicago Blackhawk states that Toronto is where he wants to play as he has friends there. Salmelainen admits that he’d be excited if a deal gets done.

The 26-year-old Finland native appeared in 57 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season, collecting 6 goals and 11 assists with 26 penalty minutes.

Salmelainen was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2nd round of the 1999 NHL entry draft.

His stats aren’t that impressive, so I hope he’s either a hell of a penalty killer, a powerhouse fighter, or a great leader.

  2. mojo19 says:

Incredible skater, nice pick-up. This seems like a classic JFJ move, bringing in quality depth guys for the Marlies/Leafs. If Salmelainen impresses during camp he'll make the team if not, he'll get a call up eventually.

Think of this signing as a Boyd Devereux, Bates Battaglia, JS Aubin type of move.

  3. Notorious71 says:

id say hes still developing, in the future he would make a great player.

  4. markjohnston says:

I don't know a lot about this guy, but these are the types of moves you have to make in the "new" nhl.

you need to sign guys that may or may not break for small money and hope to get lucky on 1/2 or a 1/3 of them.

this move sort of seems like the sort of thing collangelo (sp?) does with the raptors.

  5. Milohabs says:

Hate to burst your bubble, but he's not "quality depth" by any stretch. There is a reason Chicago & MOntreal both passed on this guy, and there's a reason no other club has signed him. Odds are, he'll play lots of time for the Marlies. Either way Torontofate (good or bad) will not be decided because they picked up this guy.

  6. mojo19 says:

Yeah I agree. Still the best we can hope for from Tony is that he’s an upgrade on Battaglia, Pohl, Kilger, Devereux and makes our third line look good. Maybe scores 20-25. Again, this is the “best” we can hope for, so fingers crossed.

If he’s around league min or whatever, good signing!

  7. Milohabs says:

you say he's developing. But he'll be 27 and at that age, and good develpoing player should have better time & numbers under his belt. Toronto would be snarter to sign Bulis

  8. mojo19 says:

No but he can skate like the wind. I definitely think if he finds the right role he's got a shot at being a regular in the line up and contributing. Im not saying its a guarantee but signing a guy like Salmaleinen is a good gamble worth taking. Worst case scenario he plays 3rd line for the Marlies, no loss though!

  9. mojo19 says:

Bulis probably wants a 1-way deal, I think the idea with Tony is that if he doesn't work out early on (as early as training camp) he won't care about playing in the AHL.

Otherwise I think they should sign Mike Johnson, he was good last year. He can definitely still play.

This is the type of stuff that shows up a lot in Leaf land, so until there is a reputable source to confirm it I am still somewhat pessimistic.

So can someone please post a link when you see a confirmed response.

Also, for someone who knows this guys game, is he any good and who can you compare him too? Is he like a Sammy Pahlsson or a Todd White?

  11. sanj91 says:

Brian, let me put it this way. The Habs traded Samsonov for him and Janssen and they bought out both of their contracts within the hour..if the habs can't use him, i dont thnk the leafs can either….

  12. Hockey_Insider says:

Well, Tony was drafted by Edmonton 2nd overall, but he's played in Euope for a while. He was once considered a good prospect, but now is nothing more than a 4th line , AHL material. He's nothing spectacular. Just another stupid move by John Ferguson Junior…if it happens.

  13. Hockey_Insider says:

*secound round. I almost made him seem like an alexandre daigle, or a matt higins. Sorry

  14. Hockey_Insider says:

Wow, the re-accuring Habs facture. Why would we take the left overs from a team that was worse than us?

  15. BrianColangeloNHLGM says:

Look at the date of the article, it was posted 2 days ago. I dont think that this rumor has any wings to it…

  16. Hoondog2 says:

To make this easier for u to understand, the Habs have lots of these types of players in their system, the Leafs don't.  This move does not make the Leafs any better, but it will make the Marlies better with the chance of him developing into something.
Its a no risk, all reward type of move.  You people need to look a little under the surface more.  Kilger, and Tucker are both Montreal castaways, and are the type of players Montreal is now lacking.
Many players have made their way in the NHL by this route.  I'm not saying this kid will be anything, but i'm not saying he won't either!

  17. the_next_agent says:

Another depth signing to help out the Marlies.  The Leafs should sign Adam Hall hes still out there and could turn out as a 3rd or 2nd line winger.  I do think we should stop signing these players for depth that wont really help our team, the Leafs should make a splash that would really help out the team.

  18. VandenLeaf says:

This is the type of Sh*t they post on here? this and comments on leafs lines? WOW. Rediculous. I have inside sources that have given me tips for serious trades in years past..(such as Nolan Trade to the leafs, Klee leaving for Suglabov, Toskala and Bell comin to town, etc) and this stupid site doesnt post them when i submit, but they post this trash? Who cares about this guy. This site is rediculous. they need to pull their head out of their asses, and keep us fans posted on real rumors.

    What a damn joke!!!

  19. TMLfan2005 says:

you're a waste of breath, shut up. You're mom doesn't count as inside source. And with the way you talk on here I can see why they wouldn't post any of your articles.

  20. FallenApostle says:

I agree the Leafs need to make a splash, but not at the expense of these depth signings. I always look at it like this, last year when the Leafs had the stretch of injuries it would have been nice to recall some from the Marlies that has NHL experience. Guys like Eric Westrum, Kris Newberry and Jeremy Williams are great, but nothing beats a quick kid, who is good with the puck and has played at the NHL level for an extended period of time.

I'd take an experienced third liner over a potential second liner as a call up any day. Simply because if you look at Newberry who thought he had to fight to stay in the NHL, and look where he ended up. If this does happen it's a quality signing that like the Clemmenson signing will help some development talent. Imagine a guy like Erik Westrum who loves to pass the puck to have someone to open up the ice for him.

  21. VandenLeaf says:

you know whats funny about guys like you? You are the white trash intelligence lacking type that get all worked up over stupid signings and predict the cup coming to TO based on such signings. I have read your posts, and your replies, and you might be one of the most *****ing naive and obtuse morons on this site. Do yourself a favor, and the rest of Leafs fans that really know hockey, and play in traffic. (FYI…my inside source is a gm for a northeast team, second source is one of your favourite players i am guessing. one you probably touch yourself to the thought of on a nightly basis. I need not answer. you already know who that is. FAG)

  22. mojo19 says:

I dont believe you. Don't take offense to it because you wouldn't believe if someone said they had friends in the NHL and friends who are GM's etc either. But what player do you (pretend to) know? Just curious. I'm not trying to be mean im just curious.

  23. TMLfan2005 says:

What? Can't take a punch? My posts are just fine and by NO MEANS does Salmelainen mean cup coming to TO. And you are one messed up kid living in your parents basement. Only a 12 year old would say you probably touch yourself. Buddy do yourself a favour and get a life.

  24. jpmac says:

Yeah the Ken Klee trade was one of the blockbusters of the century…good for you.  And can I please be your friend..because you are friends with a gm….and well that is just too cool.

  25. Leafs_Win says:

I don't know about you guys, but as I fall asleep and am touching myself I think of his mom.

A 12 year old comments. (Unless you are the son/daughter of a player/GM you are a liar)

  26. rodsnick says:

oh do you want a prize *****in retard

  27. rydyas30 says:

So have they actually signed this guy yet? or what!! Is this the guy that Eklund keeps saying is going to be our big signing!! I freak’n hope not:)

  28. m4gician says:

Just for this, I'm boycotting This website and Eklud because I swear they don't know anything and neither do the majority of the people who post there. All of you make us, as leaf fans, look like morons.

Eklund is a know nothing ass just like Steve Simmons and the Source1232 and whoever else claims they know anything.

I will ONLY get my news after it happens, that way at least I know it did.

  29. TMLfan2005 says:

lol, there's no better way to recieve the news when it's actually news.

But some people like the hockey rumors, it creates for good debate. Some people just like the news as it is, no funny stuff. I personally enjoy these rumors and now that The Toronto Sun is reporting this I bet you any money Salmelainen becomes a Leaf in the next few days.

  30. hatterson says:

So then why would you ever come to a site called Hockey Trade Rumors.  By very definition a rumor is something that doesn't have complete verification.  Please go back to posting on TSN and sportsnet and let us have fun with our rumors, even if they're far off from reality.

  31. rodsnick says:

Eklund from Hockeybuzzcom has confirmed that this is a done deal.

  32. TMLfan2005 says:

    looks like nhlline.ca was right
