Leafs interested in Berard?

TSN.CA hockey analyst Bob McKenzie reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest in former Leaf, Bryan Berard. The interest is thought to be mild. The Leafs have inquired about what it would take to sign him. Although, they do seem content to give their young guys a shot on defense.

Berard won his arbitration case this summer and the Bruins chose to walk away for him which left him a UFA. The hitch is that the Bruin have the right to match anything Berard is offered, up to 80%…$2.008 million dollars.

Berard, a former Calder trophy winner, has reached the 40+ point plateau twice in his career and was on pace for a 3rd time before a careless swing of the stick by Ottawa’s Marion Hossa caught him in the eye and briefly ended his career. Berard is a very gifted offensive talent but his eye injury has limited his effectiveness, since his high-risk style tends to cost his team dearly.

Would Bryan Berard be a good choice for the Leafs ? Why not…they have a have a half assed defensive corps…why not a half blind defenseman to go with it.

This one I actually believe! Why? I don’t know, but I do.

  2. Aetherial says:

    I believe this one also.

I hope they don’t sign him though.

I would rather see them give the kids a chance. If they need help, go for a trade in the regular season. OR

Save the budget money (2-2.5 million) to pick up help at the deadline if it truly looks like they can compete for the cup.

  3. Gforce says:

I don’t think they will sign him.they have an offensive defensmen in Housley don’t they??he mite be half blind but he can still outplay you…i think he should sue hossa for benefits & no payand the troubles he’s having know.

  4. TC_4 says:

Leafs could use him defintly. He still has Scott Neidermayer potential, but there is a long list of teams that would want him. Leafs, Oilers, Flames, Avalanche, Los Angeles, San Jose, Phoenix, Nashville, Columbus, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Washington, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Montreal, and NY Islanders. That’s a long list. Obviously not all these teams will think they need him, but they could all use him. Boston could use him to, but were wise to avoid signing him for 2.5 mil.

  5. distance7 says:

Well the Leafs picked up Jaime Pushor today and signed him to a “pro-try out contract” or something. So that might be the only other move that Ferguson decides to make, not sure if they have the money for Berard.

  6. Donovan says:

I hope your kidding with Housley, because it made me laugh

  7. Donovan says:

Jaime Pushor? Give us the Cup! One of the kids would beat Pushor for a spot.

  8. Donovan says:

When Berard, I think I remember him being on the top pairing. Berard would help the Leafs out immensely if he returned to his top form. Despite his injury, he still is a capable defenseman. He’s soild both ways, and would really help out.

  9. distance7 says:

Well they’re looking for experience I guess, I never said I liked signing him, just saying that they did.

  10. Enigma says:

    he’s a u.f.a.

  11. amazing_jesse says:

It was a “fishing expedition” for ferguson to try to find out what O’Connell’s price would be to match the qualifying offer.

If they could get Berard for under $1.5 million, then maybe – but Boston would match that.

    So, no chance.

Berard sucked with 2 eyes let alone one.

If the Leafs want an offensive D man that is a liability in his own end they have Coliaicovo at 20 years old they can play. Why pay more?

  12. BosBrn77 says:

***Berard sucked with 2 eyes let alone one. ***

Please watch more hockey before making a stupid comment like this. Berard would have been the next Coffey-type defenseman before the injury. Just about every team wanted him back then.

Considering his injury, I think he would be a welcomed addition to most teams. He can still put up points! Let us compare numbers….

    name-GP-G-A-Pts-+/-…. then salary

    Berard-80-10-28-38-(-4)…. 850,000

    Zhitnik-3-18-21-(-5)…. 3.55mil

    Schnieder-78-16-34-50-2…. 3.5mil

    Brewer-80-8-21-29-(-11)…. 1.5mil

    Aucoin-73-8-27-35-(-5)…3.1mil

    Niinimaa-76-5-39-34-(-9)…. 2.9mil

    Jonsson-71-8-18-26-(-8)….2.5mil

    Poti-80-11-37-48-(-6)…. 1.8mil

    Malakhov-71-3-14-17-(-7)….3.5mil

    Yushkevich-83-3-11-14-(-9)…. 2.75mil

    Rathje-82-7-22-29-(-19)….. 2.025mil

Now if that is a player that sucks? Give me two of them.(And this was with one eye) Especially since he made almost half of what the second highest salary of players I listed.

Dumb….HTR should sue u for wasting bandwidth.

  14. amazing_jesse says:

    Please,

I saw every single game he played for the blue and white, many in person.

I also watched a dozen or two games of his with the Rangers and Bruins and another few before that with the Rangers.

We likely agree on his skills but I severely doubt he was ever intending on becoming good in his own end.

    Much less as a cyclops.

  15. amazing_jesse says:

I said Rangers twice, I meant Islanders.

  16. mattf says:

since he walked out on the leafs to play with the rangers i would not like to see him back.

  17. BosBrn77 says:

Did I say good in his own end? Actually, Coffey was not good in his own end… he was adequate. But that is why you team a defenseman like Berard up with a defensive defenseman like O’Donnell or McGillis.

Look at the names I mentioned…… they all make mistakes in their end.

I’ve also watched many gmaes he has played… and he is not the worst guy out there. I can name plenty of guys that I would take Berard over… and a few were on the list I gave above.

  18. BosBrn77 says:

Could have been the Rangers too! LOL

Why spend 2 million+ for an offensive defenseman that we need? I mean if we need an offensive d-man why not give colaiacovo or bell a chance? (I would perfer Colaiacovo) and use the money to sign Berard used to sign a tough defensive d-man like Yushkevich? If we sign Yushkevich and bring up Colaiacovo we are going to have a great year. Also trade Reichel for something…anything. He is an o.k player but has a high salary. Look at these lines…

    Antropov/Sundin/Mogilny

    Roberts/Neiuwendyke/Nolan

    Tucker/Green/Renberg

    Fitzgerald/Reichel/Domi

    McCabe/Kaberle

    Yuskevich/Colaiacovo

    Berg/Pushor,Jackman,Belak.

    1st-Belfour

2nd-Kidd (I would have Telqvist here but just incase Belfour MAYBE doesnt do to well during the season he has a vetern goalie to back him up)

    3rd-Tellqvist

    Oops,

    Correction on the first sentence…

Why spend 2 million+ for an offensive defenseman that we need?

    Change to…

Why spend 2 million+ for an offensive defenseman that we don’t need?

  21. HockeyExpert says:

Since I screwed up here is I re-typed what I said above. With the changes

    Cause we DO need him.

    McCabe/Kaberle

    Marchment/Berard

    Colaiacovo(or Bell)/Jackman

You got an offensive d-man and a physical d-man in each pairing their, yushky is much older and doesnt have the potential berard still does. berard wouldnt cost as much i doubt as well.

  24. Parks99 says:

Ya those lines look great up front they have depth and Yushkevich and Coliaccovo(sp) would definatly help. The one thing the Leafs need above everything is a #1 defenceman. They need an anchor, the likes of Zhitnik or Hamrlik. If the Leafs find a way to bring in that #1 defenceman they will definatly be a force to be reckoned with.

  25. amazing_jesse says:

    I’m with you.

If you want a puck mover weak in his own end go with the youngsters and spend the $2 million or whatever on a tough stay at home crease clearer.

  26. amazing_jesse says:

    so will 20 other teams.

  27. JoeCheesehead says:

As Bob MacKenzie said http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie.asp?id=53387, the Leafs have a big hole in the back end. I’d go so far as to say that the Leafs team has some of the biggest back end holes in the league. In fact, this Leafs team is practically defined by their big back end hole. Not that they didn’t do anything about it – Bryan Marchment being the case in point. I for one was never happier than when i read that the Leafs stuffed Marchment in their big back end hole. Now if someone would do the same to Chelios, I could die a happy man.

  28. edmontonrules says:

Ok wtf. Just two days ago I wrote a pretty good article about why people dont sign berard. I even put it under the leafs news, hinting that they should pick him up. WHY THE HELL WASN’T IT POSTED?

  29. TC_4 says:

That’s a very excellent point man, every team that wants him will have to give him at least 2.5 mil to make sure Boston won’t match.

  30. HockeyExpert says:

yushy is only 31 he isnt old

  31. BosBrn77 says:

Actually they need to give him more then 2.08 million. The Bruins have the right to match up to 80% of the arbitration reward.
